The non-shovelware lineup on the Wii has actually got me considering a purchase. Tenchu, Deadly Creatures and that new game from the crew that made Odin Sphere...

    Civ 4.

I loved Civilisation 2, with the ultra-cheesy videos of the advisors. And Civ 3 is a game that threatened to devour my soul. I mean ... man, I would install it and then literally lose 2 entire days of my life, whereupon I would have to uninstall it and hide it away for a few months. I'm very definitely a Civ fan.

Civ 4 though. When I first installed it, I absolutely hated the new 3d view of the world. Hated it to the point of ragequitting it within the first hour and then petulantly emailing my friend with a detailed list of how they broke Civ. It was comments along the line of "when you finally scroll out far enough to actually see enough of the world to make tactical decisions, you can't recognise any of the units blah blah blah". Think that, but angrier, for about 3 pages. Yeah.

Went back to it again recently on a whim, it suddenly clicked into place and I literally lost 2 days of my life again.

(I'm now in mortal fear that having mentioned it, I might need to go and reinstall the bastard. If so, I'll see you again on Monday.)

MGS PO is definitely more gamey than the other 3D Metal Gear games, and once I got past that, I ended up treating it more like a point A to point B, old school level-based game, and had much more fun with it. It was designed to be played in small chunks on the go, and I played the whole thing in like three sittings over two days in my apartment, so that might have had something to do with it too. :)

    EDIT: Fie, beaten by Greeble!

Hah, thats funny I treated it like pokemon, gotta collect them all. Snake has very good all around stats, but many of my soldiers had better stats in certain areas. (they also had key skills snake lacks) Also the more guys you collect the more men you can put on intel gathering and weapon development etc.

See, that's cool, shows how flexible the game is.

This isn't really game-related, but growing up I never liked olives.

Then one day I decided I wanted olives, and I really liked them.

    Now, I like olives.

    This, only mushrooms.

    Actually olives too.

But I digress. I preordered the Orange Box back in '07 (how does that feel like such a long time ago now?) and when confronted with the chaos of a Team Fortress 2 server, stared at the screen for a few minutes, confused, and went off to play Portal. Six months later, I finally started reading the threads here about it, and at last discovered the joy that is playing on a PA server. Flippy has been my mortal enemy ever since. <3

For me it was Mega Man. The whole series. I got Mega Man 2 when I was a kid and I just could not make any sort of headway in the game. Forget the bosses, I couldn't even get passed the first screen in most of the stages.

Years later I got Mega Man X on PC and while I fared a bit better, I still couldn't get passed the intro stage no matter how many attempts I made. I gave up on the game out of frustration until about a year later, when on a whim I booted the game up again and made it passed the first stage, and went on to beat two of the bosses afterward. Within two weeks more or less beaten the game (couldn't beat the final boss though). A few months later I found my old NES in the garage and my copy of Mega Man 2. After a few early pitfalls (I had to get used to the fact classic Mega Man couldn't charge, dash, or climb walls) I tore shit up and was finally able to beat the game. Now Mega Man is one of my favorite videogame series.

This happens every time I encounter a new SRPG. I think "maybe this one will be different, maybe it will have a system that doesn't require ocd attention and planning to stats and moves to require victory, maybe it's a bit more lenient than other past srpgs I've played."

99.99% of the time I'm wrong.

Fallout 3. I've never played anything like it before, so I'd always use VATS thinking 'its an RPG' and just end up burning through AP and get killed about every 30 mins or so. It took a while to get used to how it plays, but now I mess around with quests and shit its 2 am and I've gotta be up for work at 8.
