Oh man that reminds me of those NES novels that used to be written for some of the big games. I had the Blaster Master and Castlevania ones. The Castlevania book was great just for the cheesy plot of a school kid (just like you omg) getting transported into the game world. The Blaster Master one was surprisingly accurate if I recall.
Another one was about Metal..... Gear. The US version. Yeah.... It had some memorable parts but then it starts comming about halfway through.
Memorable parts include:
Rubbing up against a tree to get some panther musk on him and then growling like said cat to fool the guard dogs.
While on the swaying bridge, Snake puts almost all of his equipment into the bomb blast suit and then drops it over the side. He then follows suit.
Using a book of matches to find the hidden door in his cell.
The Bionic Commando one was terrible. The hero's mechanical arm had a ray that shot out of his fingers that made anyone under its influence tell the truth.

I was just thinking about this today. The Bionic Commando and Megaman books were awesome. I bet they're still at my mom's.
Want to swap me the third one?
But seriously, I wish they would make a Bionic Commando movie based off the novella. It can't be any worst than Simply Irresistable.
I haven't put much time into my copy of Blaster Master. I bought it a while back when I went on a NES-collection spree. It's fun but there's a really , really early level where I can't figure out what the fuck I'm supposed to do to move on in the game.
Seriously, by far the only game I really remember playing on the NES (Aside from your usual mario games). You can usually find it pretty cheap on eBay, even. Think I paid like $6 for mine about 2 years ago.
Spell it right! Otherwise how will he ebay it?!
That was a great game, but with a terrible soul crushing password system.
The password system was nothing compared to Guardian Legend. The password system on that sucked monkey teet.

Yeah, the Blaster Master kid's novel was surprisingly enjoyable. In fact, I still have a copy of it in my room
Oh, and as for NES recommendations, I'd definitely go with Destiny of an Emperor, a fun little JRPG from Capcom based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms. You'll fall in hate with Lu Bu all over again.
Since just about every single good NES game has been mentioned, I'll go ahead and say Jeopardy was pretty good, and even three-player (although it didn't support the multitap, so players 2 and 3 both had to buzz in on the second controller).
I always enjoyed playing Baloon Fight with my dad and cousins when I was but a wee nipper. Not sure whether the OP wold enjoy some of the more earlier NES games but that title was pretty glorious when it came to being an asshole against yor co-player or the A.I opponents.
Hell yes. This. Also, Mach Rider.
Lessee, what else can I recommend? Well, these are at least worth looking into:
Adventure Island series
Batman
Batman Returns (but not Batman: Return of the Joker)
The Battle of Olympus
Bionic Commando (it'll make you appreciate the remake more, if you've not played that yet)
Blaster Master
A Boy and his Blob (almost typo'd "blog." That would be interesting as a premise, at least)
Bubble Bobble
Casino Kid, if you like the idea of a Poker/Blackjack-themed RPG.
Castlevania series
Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers series
Clash at Demonhead
Cobra Triangle
Code Name: Viper (basically a Rolling Thunder clone by Capcom)
Contra and Super C
Darkwing Duck
Double Dragon
Dr. Mario
Dragon Warrior series, perhaps?
Ducktales series
Excitebike
Duck Hunt
Barker Bill's Trick Shooting
Faxanadu
Either GI Joe or GI Joe: The Atlantis Factor-- I forget which was the good one. Latter is by Capcom, tho.
Gargoyle's Quest II: The Demon Darkness
Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode
Goonies II
Gradius
Gun.Smoke
Hogan's Alley
Ice Climber
Ikari Warriors series
Ironsword: Wizards & Warriors II
Jackal
Kid Icarus
Kirby's Adventure
Kung Fu
The Legend of Zelda (it's really rad)
Lemmings
The Little Mermaid (or so I hear)
The Mafat Conspiracy: Golgo 13 II
Maniac Mansion
Mega Man series (2 and 3 are best)
Metal Gear
Metal Storm
Metroid
Mighty Final Fight
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
Ninja Gaiden trilogy (1st and 2nd, at least)
Pinball
Popeye
Power Blade
Prince of Persia (no idea if it lives up to the modern pedigree)
Pro Wrestling
R.C. Pro-Am series
Rad Racer series
Rampage
River City Ransom
Rolling Thunder
Section Z
Shatterhand
Skate or Die! series
Snake's Revenge (screw the haters)
Spy Hunter
Spy vs. Spy
Startropics (I didn't like the gameplay, but some do)
Stinger
Strider (nothing like the arcade version)
Super Mario Bros. series
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series (first one is TOUGH)
Tetris (Tengen's allows two players at once, with none of that sabotage stuff; just two independent games running at once)
Tiny Toon Adventures series
Urban Champion (VERY niche title, don't pay much at all for this. I love it, but most don't)
Wario's Woods
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Wizards & Warriors
Wizards & Warriors III
Wrecking Crew
Wrath of the Black Manta
Yoshi

Hedgethorn...somehow I missed those, and I even scanned carefully. Chalk it up to being tired I guess.:P
slash000, what level man? I remember being stuck once or twice myself, but it's very worth figuring it out.
The music in this game still stands today as awesome, especially levels 3, 5 and 6. They're all perfect for their respective levels though. The composers really outdid themselves.
theres snakes, toilet seats, and a rockin' boogy woogy soundtrack. Don't let the wikipedia article mislead you about the controls, this shit was OFF DA HOOK!
I second this notion. I seriously had too much fun with this game back in the day.
One that I havn't seen mentioned that I played the shit out of: Disney’s Adventures in the Magical Kingdom.
Just remembered a few that im not sure have been mentioned (I read the thread but who knows).
Low G Man - Sidescroller platformer where you can steal enemy vehicles and ride them around. I loved it years ago but after playing it recently.... It hasnt aged well, but still neat.
Codename Viper - Really cool slower paced platformer... sort of reminds me of Contra and Flashback combined.
[Kabuki Quantum Fighter, hooray!] And... Shit i cant remember the name! You were a red headed chick (i think) who killed people by whipping her hair at them, and i think you could swing around by your hair as well. Reminded me a bit of the first Batman game, probably because you could walljump.
Also there is some game i am totally confused of. I keep thinking its Blaster Master but i doubt it. Early on you started in this egg-shaped ship that could fly around the level, but eventually you had to abandon it to get into other vehicles. Thats really all i remember about it, it seemed fun

I remember liking the Captain America and the Avengers game....as well as Yo Noid!
Kabuki Quantum Fighter
Werewolf
um...I had another one in my head that I forgot as I read through this thread. There are lots of random wacky games for the NES. If you find yourself in a store that sells NES carts, just grab five random games. You'll get something fun out of the pile.
Well there's still a lot of "shovelware" out there....I've found that in recent years, most places have the same collection of about 50-60 games. Seriously, it's like they all got their games from the same surplus warehouse. You have to really hunt if you want the good games anymore, since they have seemingly all been purchased (or at least are only available online).
At least, that's how it is in my area...we only have two stores that even sell NES games anymore...

No. No, no a million times no. This game is terribad. It's not on Something Awful's Rom Pit for nothing. It's a challenging game for all the wrong reasons, mostly because the game's own controls are pretty bad and will more often then not end up being your downfall.
Super Spike V-Ball (I think that's the name) is a great co-op game. Very difficult though. The AI in the final stages will K-A-B-O-O-O-O-M spike you and block of all yours almost perfectly.
Throwing in another vote for Crystalis. I played it on NES and later on GBC and I'm still sad I never beat it.
I loved Bucky O' Hare.
Batman is fantastic.
Ducktales! Awoo-woo!
I have fond memories of Monster In My Pocket.
I never did play Batman or Bucky O'Hare, but from the rest I can see that our taste in NES games are similar... I'm going to have to try and find those ones.
I agree that Werewolf is a wretched game. I thought the graphics were kinda cool at the time...may have been my first lesson in gameplay over graphics. Also, you don't even get to play in werewolf form for most of the game...not THAT is lame.

Sounds like Solar Jetman, to me (described earlier in the thread).
Off the top of my head, a few of my old favorites were...
Chip N' Dale!!!!! for kick ass chipmunk action. Magic of Scheherazade for a bizarre little adventure/RPG. Wrath of the Black Manta for everything a good ninja game needs. Golgo 13 for sniping people in the damn head and being so innovative. Motherfucking MAPPY LAND for kicking my ass so hard and making me want to die. Rygar for being such an awesome, innovative, expansive open world action RPG. Wizards and Warriors for being just all around awesome. Yo! Noid for being a kickass game made about the stupidest of mascots. Goonies II. It's the Goonies, okay? Journey to Silius for space-splosions. Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu for being surprisingly awesome. Deja Vu and Shadowgate for teaching me to love adventure games. Faxanadu for being the coolest RPG on the system. Little Nemo for being the next best thing to Super Mario 3 + animal-humping. A Boy and His Blob, seriously. Willow for being an absolutely brilliant movie adaptation and a fantastic RPG. DuckTales. Scrooge McDamn Duck man.
Damn I need to break out the NES.

The controls take a lot of getting used to. At first, its really brutal but I actually like it. The heavy gravity planets suck though.
The final round is a real sonnavabitch but its doable. I remeber cheating with the game genie and having unlimited lives, it still didn't make it that easy.

Zelda. Probably don't need a lot of description here.
Blaster Master, Star Tropics and Crystalis, for all the reasons mentioned so far.
Deja Vu. A film-noir style mystery. It plays like a text adventure game (move between locations, collect items, solve puzzles) but has graphics for each location. It was built on the same engine as Shadowgate but is a much better game (Shadowgate has more random, unpredictably instant-death bullshit than any other game ever)
Note: The following 3 are ports of classic PC games but actually have better graphics and sound on the NES (though of course the Amiga versions are usually even better)
Ultima: Quest of the Avatar. Released as Ultima 2 for the NES it is a port of Ultima 4 (Ultima 1 NES = Ultima 3 for the PC). Very nice graphics and music for a NES RPG. And of course Ultima 4 is one of the greats of the genre.
Defender of the Crown. Mix of a simple wargame with minigames for fencing and jousting ala Pirates!.
Maniac Mansion. One of the best Lucas Arts adventure games with quite nice graphics and music for an 8 bit console.
Edit: Couple others came to mind
Faxanadu of course. Never owned it but played all the way through a friends copy. Excellent music and a very original setting.
RC Pro Am. Great top-down racing game with powerups.
Xevious. Excellent arcade port and the only game ever to be more fun / easier to play with the Power Glove.
Ice Hocky! Awesome multiplayer fun. Always go 3 skinnies man.
Captain Skyhawk. Ye gawds did this game push the limits for graphics on the NES. Came out rather late though.
Double Dragon. The classic brawler.
Silent Service. Submarine sim. Kind of a niche game but I like it.
RC Pro Am, especially with friends. The unbranded precursor to Mario Kart.
The original RC Pro Am was single-player only (but really, really good!)
RC Pro Am 2 could be played by up to 4 players (just try and find a NES Four Score adapter... avoid the NES Satellite, 80's wireless controller technology wasn't very good...) Note that RC Pro Am 2 does some awful rubber-banding during races to keep all four players on-screen, so don't expect too much realism. The Mario Kart analogy is certainly good in this case.
And for more really fun 4-player games:
Super Spike V'Ball (probably the best 4-player game on the NES)
Ivan Ironman Stewart's Super Offroad (ridiculous fun for 4 players, although it gets less fun once players start getting eliminated)
There was also a 4-player tennis game I remember having fun with, but I can't remember the title. From some googling, it might have been "Top Players Tennis", but I can't be sure.
