Oh shit, and Metal Warriors.
Such an awesome game.
Being able to get out of your giant robot and switch to another was awesome.
Also, the one on one multiplayer was really fun. For how varied all the mechs were, it was surprisingly balanced.
Wait I'm thinking SNES.

I've wanted to try Deja Vu, which is a lot like it gameplay-wise, but is sort of an old detective type story.

Deja Vu certainly had some "Fuck you" moments in it. I will say this. Punching that one bitch is perfectly acceptable. Some of the things you have to look at or do are semi-off the screen. make sure and look at EVERYTHING.

Deja Vu was an awesome game, as was Shadow Gate and Princess Tomato and the Salad Kingdom.
If you like adventure games that are quite difficult...get those three games.
Maniac Mansion too...but try to get an older version, since you can blow up the hamster in that one. :P
Well shit... i always thought Maniac Mansion was a different game. I remember one that must have had Mansion in the title, but it was a sidescroller, and you could die Really easily. It all took place inside a big mansion of course, with a bunch of doors that led to different areas, and you went around collecting items of some sort.
The cover had a picture of a guy crouching with possibly a knife in his hand and some goo ominously creeping up on him. Thats one game i never came close to beating, but played the first 20 minutes a hundred times.
I was going to recommend Captain Planet and the Planeteers and also Bart vs. The World, because I loved them as an 8 year old, but after looking around on the internet they are listed in lists of 'bad' games.
This makes me sad, cos I definetely had years of fun playing on these (apart from Mario/Duck Hunt, they were also the only ones I had), which are accused of having poor graphics, gameplay and music.
Nevermind. You may take this as an "anti-recommend", unless you, like me, enjoy the irony of shooting down the planes and oil rigs of "polluters".

Bart vs. the Space Mutants is a horrible awful game.
Bart vs. the World is a merely bad game with some redeeming qualities.
Captain Skyhawk. Ye gawds did this game push the limits for graphics on the NES. Came out rather late though.
I was just about to add this one to the list. Captain Skyhawk was pretty damn good, even though the ending was a total letdown.
The game had 8 levels, and one final boss battle. Levels were handled in pairs. The first part was always a top-down, fast-paced shmup. The second part could be be described as Afterburner lite, where the perspective shifted to behind your F-14, and you had to kill other aircraft. After that, you'd be required to dock with your space station (yes, your F-14 could fly in space...), and, I think, cash in points for extra weapons or lives or something along those lines.
The shmup levels repeated themselves. Levels 1 and 5 were the same, except in difficulty. The same goes for 2 and 6, 3 and 7, and 4 and 8. Levels 2 and 6 had you dropping supplies to ground forces. The map would repeat itself until you got them all. Levels 4 and 8 (by far the hardest in the game) required you to do something else along those lines...I think you had to rescue a scientist. All I remember is that those levels were critical to the plot, as completing each one gave you half of the super laser required to kill the last boss.

Hell, they still are to me. When I was playing through Lolo on VC, I would still absolutely hate it and freak out when I get killed by Medusas or Don Medusas. I swear, they sends shivers down my spine. Hate it, hate it, hate it.
Love the games, though. I really wish they'd release Lolo 3 on VC.

I still own Festers Quest, but it brutal and irritating if you don't have a controller with turbo...preferably the NES Advantage...awesome controller.
AVGN made a hilarious video about Fester's Quest. :P
I managed to beat it well before I had a turbo controller. My thumb is gnarled up pile of meat to this day.
My friend beat it on a black and white tv. It's a pain to have to remember the when to grab the power ups and when to avoid them so you don't get downgraded.
I have a place in my heart for Fantasy Zone, it may have been pretty 'special' looking and your ship was an egg with wings but it was certainly different and fun. Never did finish it because the cartridge itself gave up the ghost (unlicensed Tengen cart). Wish I'd never sold my NES, had all the insane and now valuable accesories like the Uforce and ROB.
Now hey, that game is really awesome, I just wish it had more than two levels. But as long as it lasts it's the best 2 player NES game.
2 levels? You must not be thinking about the same game that has infuriated the entire population that owned it. I don't think I ever finished that game, and I don't think anyone I know has.

The way I read it, he is basically saying that the game might as well only have two levels, which is true. Fuck, that game is hard.
Another game to play if you hate yourself: Ghosts 'n Goblins. Personally I'd rather sit on my nuts, but to each his own.

Hahaha oh man. My parents bought me Ghosts N Goblins when it came out as a present. To this day I can't get past level 2. In fact, no one in my family has ever got past level 2. My cousins would come over and play it all the time, just to try and get to the third level.
We still have the music memorized though. That game is awesome.

I liked the AVGN episode where he and the guy behind his couch tried playing it 2-player. They concluded that despite what the options would have you believe it's NOT a 2 player game at all, as having 2 players actually makes the game impossible.

It's impossible with one player, with two it is just more impossible.
Since it is impossible either way you might as well have the extra fun afforded by two players for a short while.
