2150 K Wiis? That probably didn't meet demand. ABER DREI MILLIONEN DS?! Vortex of insanity!
Look at that top 10 DOOMINATION!
And look at the PS3...
No, that's not true..
THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!
Search your feelings. You know it to be true.
For what I don't know, but I couldn't leave the quote unfinished.

Heavily disappointing for Wii. DS takes the single sales month crown though. Must say i'm surprised.
As expected, PS3 down YoY. I'm still wary of calling it a trend; i'll wait for January numbers. Still, the worst time of the year to do worse than last.
'Heavily disappointing'? I'd, uh, say the Wii did all right.

It could have done monumentally better. Make no Mistake, if this is truly a supply issue Nintendo sees this as a failure, and will probably indicate as much in upcoming PR.

Last time I heard Nintendo were making like six dollars for every Wii sold... I think. That's 12 million bucks of profit right there, and the return on Wii Play and Mario Kart Wii/DS has to be pretty tight as well.
Does Nintendo make a profit on the DS as well? If so, goddamn.
I am actually afraid what Nintendo will make if the 180 dollar DSi gets the same numbers...
Here is a scary question: Do we really know if the Wii was supply constrained this time around?
It's an honest question. I haven't gone to a game store or big box retailer recently, so I'm not sure if it's still damn hard to find a Wii. I remember seeing a few back in November, which was understandable because Nintendo made such a big push and there was such high demand. But December?
However, if that's not the case ... then we just found the peak for the Wii at that price level. It means, lo and behold, even Nintendo may want to consider a price drop sometime in '09.
Some quick addition,
Wii software sales in the top ten: 4.79 million, 3.33 million without Wii Play
360: 2.71 million
That Wii, just don't sell games.
Third-party says what?
Ask Activision.

Third-party says what?
Probably sold more outside of the top ten.
Overall
"While industry growth has not continued at the blistering pace we saw during the second and third quarters, December's 9% increase over last December brings the year in 19% ahead of last year, and sets a new record for total industry sales."
"This month marks the first time that industry revenue has topped $5B in any single month. In 1997, annual revenues were $5.1B, and now a single month has realized that level of sales."
"We get asked a lot why there are so many layoffs and studio closings occuring in the industry when it has just realized another record-breaking year. This is not a case of the rising tide lifting all boats. The increasees are not being enjoyed equally by all manufacturers and publishers."
Hardware
"The NDS captures the top-spot for hardware sales this month, marking the first time that any hardware system has sold in excess of 3 million units in any single month."
"The record for single-month console system sales still belongs to the PS2 which sold 2.7 million units in December 2002."
"38 months into this generation of hardware, the three new systems have sold a combined 38.2 million units, whereas at the same point last generation, in December 2003, the three systems had sold 36.9 million units. Factoring in the continued strong sales of the PS2 even after the new systems were released, 52 million systems have sold at retail since November '05."
Software
"Software sales reached nearly $11B, which is more than total industry revenues were in 2005."
"While some have wondered if the popularity of Guitar Hero and Rock Band is waning, both properties realized their best month yet in dollar sales, and combined represent 16% of total software dollar sales this month."
"The variety of content on the top 10 list shows just how viable non-traditional content has become. Not only can these games succeed, they can end up on the top 10 list for the year."
So current totals for 2008 in the US are Wii Fit on 4.53 million and GTA4 (PS3 and 360) on a total of 5.18 million. With the massive japan sales, I wouldn't be surprised if worldwide, wii fit did outsell GTA4 in 2008, which heralds the end of gaming or something. I just wish I remember who I made that bet with.

Both Wii Fit and Mario Kart have already sold more than GTAIV worldwide.

Most places have reported a lack of Wiis shipped. A lot of people were wondering how the Wii would sell 3 million units despite no place reporting getting more Wiis than in November. Some people thought it had to do with online sales, but I guess it was actually just supply constrained.

No online retailer has the Wii in stock at $250 and none lasted more than a few hours during December. In store I can't attest to, but until you can go online and order a Wii at will, they will have yet to ship enough to meet demand.

Well I dunno about the end of gaming but the one game I consistently play is Wii Fit.

Anecdotally, I'm gonna say yeah it was a supply deal. We (Fry's) were sold out of Wiis AND DSes post-Christmas until a couple days ago. Sold out of Mario Kart and some other Wii stuff, too.

While I do admit this is a possibility, I would suggest that the Wii supply is tapped out after selling an unprecedented 4 million systems in 2 months.
I would also suggest that at this time, the above is the far more likely scenario.

Wait, I'm confused about this graph. Obviously the consoles didn't release at the same time. Is one of those "launch aligned" graphs? (Ugh) If so, I'm curious what the 3rd party sales for the 360 are now, because that's the economic condition now, not some theoretical universe where all three consoles released at the same time.

This graph is like 'How to say nothing with charts 101'
It provides no indication on average sales, or highest sales or anything else. It is simply total. Which means so little.
It also doesn't speak at all about quality, or anything really.
The other point is that the PS3 and the 360 are not separate for the vast majority of games. Meaning you combine both of their lines and it is higher than the Wii line. Much higher.

Oh that's not brand new data, it's from this page. However I would be surprised if Nintendo is somehow magically immune from economic conditions in a way that would see third party sales decrease even as their own games rocket upward.

The 360 and PS3 were the easiest ones to predict.
Wii is lower than all expected. Supply constrained no doubt.
Other than that, I guess 360 is about what was expected, PS3 too. No real surprises.

Looks like the DS did it instead.
