The AI didn't seem any better on hard. I just took more damage. It seemed like they still took about the same to die. I could have sworn the first FEAR made the AI tactics a lot better when you cranked up the difficulty. Also, lack of dual wielding makes the pistol pretty useless this time around. It doesn't pack the same punch as the first game.
I mean it's possible that the demo is just set up using shitty parts of the game where the AI can't path worth a damn, but if that's true why did they put that in the demo, when in the demo for the first FEAR game they picked out setpieces that specifically would show off the different awesome things their AI could do?
It's like they decided to take a step forward to mediocrity while taking a few steps back from what differentiated them in the first place.
So basically, it looks like it's going to be watered down into another console shooter.

I'm pretty certain that the AI used the same routines in FEAR whichever difficulty level you chose, it's just that they survived longer and did more damage. In an interview about the AI the devs basically said they wanted people to see and feel this awesome AI at work, so they didn't want to dumb it down for the easier difficulty levels.
I really enjoyed the demo. I've seen many complaints here about the sound effects of the guns, but I thought they sounded great. I'm looking forward to the full game quite a bit!
Did you play the first fear? The shotgun had a really satisfying POW!!! sound when you fired it. In the demo it sounds sorta similar, but it severely lacks the punch of the shotgun in the first one, in both sound and damage. Despite a few disappointments I have had with demo, I really enjoyed it and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna pick up the full version. Btw, did anyone else enjoy the atmosphere of the streets part just before you get the mech? I was all like  :winky:

To be honest I found the noise of the shotgun a bit irritating in the original FEAR. Although if a lot of people miss it that much I'm sure someone will probably mod it in eventually.

Uh it still saws people in half. Use slo-mo to get right next to a guy and then *BLAM* two halves fall to the ground.
I like what the sniper rifle does to fleshy targets. SOOOO much better than the shitty ASP rifle in the first game. Hopefully the Type-7 makes a triumphant return, because I wish to create some multi-cultural skeletons.

Well maybe its been too long since I last played the original fear, but I thought I remembered the shotgun just being overall being more brutal, than it is in the fear 2 demo.
So nobody else is having the startup crash issue? I've tried everything, but as soon as I start the demo it just crashes right to desktop and windows can't find a reason for it. Anyone have any ideas as to what could be doing this? Audio codecs, something?

I definitely was able to explode guys into nearly nothing with the shotgun in the FEAR 2 demo.
I did play the first FEAR, quite a bit, it's one of my favorite games. The weapons sound more realistic in the new game, which is a style I prefer. To each his own.

The demo didn't do much to impress me. I seem to remember being more impressed by the first FEAR demo than this one. It was pretty, but the AI some how seemed dumber.
...and the whole "scary little girl" shtick is done to death now. I'm a wuss and it still doesn't really seem that scary, just annoying.
Personally, I'm gonna wait on this one. I still liked it, just not enough to pay $50 for it. I'll wait till it hits $20.
It didn't scare me in the least bit. But, I was thinking 'Oh, that's pretty cool'.
Last time I was scared from a video game was that Clive Barker's something something. The one that didn't suck. You know... you had that revolver and were in that mansion. It was called the Undeading or something.
The game runs in 16:9 on my 16:10 monitor. That's where the demo disappointed me the most.
Kinda disappointing, but I don't really mind that. It's the fact that the game just looked like a smeary mess most of the time. I just didn't know what the hell was going on as everything was shiny shiny explody smokey blurry blurry.
So did anyone else feel the demo played more like Condemned 2.5 then an Fear 2? I know its the same developer but it just felt like condemned with shooting, I remember fear 1 feeling way more... visceral.

I found that a bit excessive too, but tolerable, might be the first game where I'm going to try to turn down the graphic settings to make it look better.
I like the demo really, I just wish game developers would stop hating PC gamers already.

I figure the resolution thing is just a bug or an oversight that ought to be easy for them to fix.
If not WSG will probably swamp their forums.

Is anyone else having problems binding mouse MOUSE4 and MOUSE5? I can't get it to bind at all and it annoys me.

Assassin's creed did the whole 16:9 thing as well I think.
As for the mouse, yeah, it won't bind 4 and 5 for me either. And even on the lowest sensitivity it's too high for me. It's ridiculous how many games that are released on to PC can't get mouse controls right. Also annoying is having to to cycle between yes and no rather than having a choice box.
Played through this demo tonight...holy crap it's short, but full of awesome! Damn pretty too...they certainly threw in a crapload of blur/lighting effects, but if anything it made it more creepy for me. The mech rocked, certainly one of my fav parts, just because I got to blow the troops literally in half. Always good fun.
I have to double check, I thought origins was going to be a prequel, but it seems to be a direct sequel, I guess?
It was funny though, hopefully this level was ratched up for the demo, I mean you literally walked through every gun in the game in 5 minutes. Unless there's 25 more guns waiting for you later on?

Very pretty, impressive demo. Much MUCH better looking then the first game, and that is of course saying something. This time around however my rig aced it right away and for once the game detected my settings properly and set everything to max.
I liked how one area in particular was just so fucked up that I had a hard time walking through it. I ran.
Seems like this is going to be a bonefied AAA title. My only complaint is it put 16:9 bars at the top and bottom of the screen. Did give it a unique cinematic flavor.. but it really isn't that cool for a pc game to have bars.
Very fun, and satisfying to look at the presets and have everything set to Max. :P
About the story:
Seems that those flashes to the "Realm of Alma" are seen a bit. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a couple levels or mini-levels set in those blasted landscapes.
So nobody else is having the startup crash issue? I've tried everything, but as soon as I start the demo it just crashes right to desktop and windows can't find a reason for it. Anyone have any ideas as to what could be doing this? Audio codecs, something?
Man, I'm having this exact problem with it too. I believe it has something to do with audio codecs but I'm not sure.
I've managed to get to the point where I can play FEAR without batting an eye now, I played through EP for the first time with no problems and the scares didn't even phase me. But dear god that demo scared the hell outta me, those nightmares are much more of a pain in the ass the the original ones. I got pissed when it ended right as you began the fight that was about to happen.
The one that got to me the most was that one where you're exiting the subway though a maintenence tunnel (last one before you go onto the street.)
*Blue flash, noise* "What was that? and explosion or somth-" *turns around*
And, so its going on at the same time as EP? That jet went down right after the explosion, so it seems like the same timeframe (barring the fact that EP was at night)

Not so much as taking at the same time as Extraction Point more than EP being completely disregarded in canon (same for Perseus Mandate). So, kinda, sorta, not really.
Downloaded and finished the demo. The bit with the EPA was great and makes me agree with whomever else was pining for a good modern mech game. The rest of it...meh. Criticisms spoilered for size and some other reason that escapes me:
1. There's something about the combat that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The recoil for guns just seems extremily...amplified, I guess - even when crouched and sight-aiming it's like I can only get three or so shots before I'm completily off the mark. Maybe it's because I get this feeling that the recoil's sending you all over the place instead of up and a bit to the right that irks me. Then there's this feeling of my shots not really having any impact until the enemy's health count ticks down to zero, though that might be a part of the recoil thing I mentioned.
2. Count me aboard the "the graphical style sucks" boat - the problem with FEAR 1 was the repetition of of the warehouse/office/laboratory style over and over and over again, not the W/O/L styles themselves, and now it's just this dull, grey, worn-out, crapsack mess with dull, grey, worn-out, crapsack clones running around in it. Ugh.
3. To be honest, the whole "horror" aspect of it started to wear thin after that one hallway in the school. Ooooh, dead bloody bodies hanging around and the walls and floors and ceilings splattered with blood, ooooh, ghooooosts, ooooh, the little psychic girl is angry, ooooh, random split-second jump-out rape scenes. It just seems so forced and generally uninspired,
Then again, this is coming from someone who found the first game completily mediocre, so take it as you will.
Regarding 3. you are my favorite kind of character in Horror movies. They always die in the most horrible of ways.
