Seriously, can anybody explain all the love for Baldur's Gate 2? It's just another generic AD&D based RPG.
It is the memorable characters, but god damn is that game ever dated. If anyone tries to say it isn't they are a liar.
It isn't dated at all. It's quite simply the best game to have ever been made.
The fact that I've never stopped playing it for more than six months since it came out has nothing to do with me not thinking it isn't dated.
The game has trouble running at a decent resolution, the graphics for the items are horrendous. Why does the best weapon in the game like amazingly similar to the worst weapon in the game? At least in Diablo the color changed.
The game does have trouble running at larger resolutions, yes, but that's been taken care of by modders. The game looks pretty good running at 1680x1050 and larger.
As for the weapons, different weapons do look different. Unique weapons have their own inventory icons and many have their own graphical effects such as glowing different colors or having different colored blades and hilts. They don't all look amazingly different, but to say there's no variation is an outright falsehood.
Portal aside, I hate every game Valve has ever made.
Every Blizzard game.
What is wrong with you? Do you ate ice cream and cake too?
Valve creates boring worlds with blank-faced characters and only some semblance of story while also putting out nothing-new FPS gameplay. Then they create multiplayer mods four years later and people praise them as brilliant. Hell, a lot of people even defend the Source engine saying it "still looks fantastic."
Blizzard is more of a genre thing, in that I simply don't like those genres, but Blizzard is at the top of said genres, so my hate is reflected onto them. They had a shot at my love with StarCraft: Ghost, then swiftly killed it.
How about this, FPS all suck. If you played one, you've played them all. I haven't felt the urge to play a FPS since I played Doom. To me they might as well all be Doom clones.
Woah.
Sure there have been graphical advancements, and the look better and better, but gameplay wise, really, aren't all FPS the same game?
People bitch way too much about QTE events. They really aren't that bad
Because having to watch minutes of a cut scene again because you decided to take a drink of water is fun.
Oh yeah I always miss parts of the story to go get some water instead of waiting till the cutscene is over and pausing the fucking game
Sometimes I have water beside me while I play that I sometimes drink during a non-interactive part of the game. I don't even have to stand up to get it. I think he's saying that he does the same thing.
Or she.
You should still be able to pause the game though
So the problem more is being too lazy to push the start button

Final Fantasy 8 is the second best game in the series. The retarded "we knew each other when we were kids but forgot" plotline and the easily abusable Draw/Junction system drops it down a notch. Final Fantasy 9 is the best Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy 6 is a fairly weak game, and the less said about the games that preceded it the better.

Also, I hate the 360. Mostly because you can go through upwards of 6 in two years. Also because its two best selling titles haven't failed to bore me to death.
Other games and exclusives are pretty good, but I'll play them on my PC thank you very much.

If you haven't played many, I could see you thinking this. But once you've played a wide variety of them, you come to realize many really do play very differently from eachother and one generally doesn't feel anything like another.
At their core, yes, you point and shoot, but that's just one small part of what makes an FPS.
The cameras are entirely useless and don't need to be included. The battery life gets a nice kick in the nuts. The GBA slot is gone which not only destroys B/C (Which is always a good move, apparently, and nobody ever gets called out on it or ridiculed), games that had functionality based on that slot are shafted if not unplayable. And it's not even an option of -not- upgrading sometime down the road, since they're adding the DSi Shop which requires the SD slot, and the DSi Shop will probably have decent games eventually (and a ton of not decent games).

Yup. If you really wanted to, you could say that every racing/sports/rpg/rts is exactly the same because they all share similar mechanics.
So yes, every FPS game is an FPS. No, they are all not the same.

I always thought one of the strong points of Half-Life 2 was the facial animation, which is still competitive with games coming out today.
The story in Half-Life 2 might not be incredibly in depth with lengthy cut scenes and random books thrown about the world, but there is a story there if you want to find it. The main thing about the game is that you are the character, you know as much about the story as he does. With assumptions and a little digging around in the game you can learn a lot more about the story than is just given to you if you fly through the game.
Also to say that Half-Life 2 brought nothing new to FPS games is a pretty big oversight. The gravity gun has been pretty heavily ripped off.
It is not just one thing that makes Half-Life 2 an amazing game, it is everything. The detail in the world is incredible from random items thrown about to the giant combine tower off in the distance spewing out drones to find you. The atmosphere of the game are spot on.

Well, I have tried a bunch of them, hoping to somehow get into them. Everything from Quake to Halo to Half-Life, among others.
And my reaction to each after about 30 minutes to an hour has been exactly the same, "meh, I think I've played this game before, and it was called Doom." At which point I quit due to complete boredom.
The funny thing is I don't have this problem at all with 3rd person shooters. I recently played and finished both GOW2 and Dead Space and enjoyed both.
I'm not sure if that is sarcasm or not so I 'll just say you need to a) see it in motion and b) see it on pc.
It isn't crysis "Oh my god, my eyes have orgasmed" level of graphical brilliance but damn, the art direction in L4D is wonderful and the number of zombies (not to mention how well animated they and everyone else in the game are) I can't see how this game isn't gorgeous.
But I have seen it in motion. And that shot is from the PC version.
Yes, it can handle a lot of things onscreen, that's fine. It should be able to, they've had four years to master the damn engine. I'm not saying the game is butt-ugly, it's perfectly playable, but when people start throwing around words like "beautiful" and "gorgeous" in the same year we got great-looking games like MGS4, GoW2 and Resistance 2 (and with Killzone 2 weeks away), it makes me wonder if maybe they're blind.
EDIT: Hey, this post reminds me of an addition to my list: Fuck Gears of War 1 and 2.
I think Fallout was a good idea on paper but there really isn't anything in the game proper worth playing it for. Cool setting, cool lore but a subpar game with standard writing. It's also ridiculously short (like 4 hours short, should you choose to do the main quest) and the random encounters are ridiculously hard. I can't fight 4 Mutants at level 2, fellas.
The Fallout series itself just...isn't that good. F3 was the best among them as far as gameplay goes (and it was still pretty bad). I own every Fallout game made but...it's out of the love for the idea, not the games themselves.
Despite its rushed localization, Legend of Dragoon was actually a decent JRPG. It could really use a sequel/prequel. Also it has a great soundtrack.
OMG, somebody else liked that game! I'm not alone anymore! I was crushed when I realized there wouldn't be another one.
I loved the battle system, but the story was laughably bad. Also, everyone was praising how the game looked at the time, and I couldn't quite figure out why.

I agree about the post-SNES Marios and Zeldas. Although they improved along the way, I still consider them inferior to the 2D games. In fact, I think both Mario and Zelda peaked on the SNES.
I thought OoT was about as exciting as watching paint dry.
People who don't "get" Half-Life, I don't consider them gamers.
World of Warcraft is a great MMOG and Ultima Online was and is overrated.

I cannot get into games like Baldur's Gate, Planescape, and Fallout 2. I want to get into them, but I always find the beginning of the game to go too slowly and I get bored. I always keep on trying again, though.
I do honestly think it's because I never got into them when they came out, so I'm missing something to appreciate them.

Tribes is trash and it should never have been successful.
The games that gave the Tribes series life, Earthsiege 1 and 2 and then Starsiege are much better games. As much as people loved MechWarrior, I always preferred the siege games and one of the greatest pities in the industry thus far is the Tribes takeover of the franchise and the subsequent death of it after Vengeance.

As a wacky choose-your-own-adventure novel? It's entertaining.
But as a game I think it SUCKS.

It doesn't have to be the best looking game ever to still look damn good
I have high settings and it looks fantastic with great lighting and everything
Sorry it's not cel-shaded

fallout 2 was not a masterpiece
I didn't find Starcraft to be very fun.
I think Z is the best 2D RTS ever made.
I think that Killer Instinct is an awesome fighting game that doesn't get nearly enough appreciation.
Team Buddies is one of, if not the best Playstation game ever made.
Devil Dice is a better puzzle game than Tetris.
Nero wasn't nearly as fun to use as Dante in DMC4.
N+ was 2008's platformer of the year. And yes, it's better than Braid.
You're a cool guy. We should go out sometime, grab some Italian food.
They are just better looking in different ways
Speaking of Fallout 2, I think FO2 is a pretty creepy game.
Like I get creeped out by it. Because it's weird and creepy.
OMG, somebody else liked that game! I'm not alone anymore! I was crushed when I realized there wouldn't be another one.
I actively dislike using WASD + Mouse for FPS games and if a game is compatible with my 360 controller I use it.
The Fallout series itself just...isn't that good. F3 was the best among them as far as gameplay goes (and it was still pretty bad). I own every Fallout game made but...it's out of the love for the idea, not the games themselves.

Still, a sequel would be neat.
How is that unpopular? Didn't it get pretty nice reviews?
How do you fair against WASD and Mouse playing brethren?
