i got a mate's 18th that me and my girlfriend are invited to and we're trying to brainstorm some costume ideas.
PA! help us brainstorm!!

we're looking for something somewhat original (i.e, not batman and catwomen)
something not too trashy
and most importantly: something feasible and easy to find materials and costumes for

i'm totally at a loss for original ideas! fire them at me h/a!

++++
on a side note, that social paranoia side note:
my friend is one of those people that gets along with everyone, including some people that outwardly don't like me. just a few, like maybe 2 or 3 guys and girls, but enough for me to wonder if anything could maybe get silly if we're all drunk and someone started something.

is it silly for me to worry about this? what sort of precautions should i take if i'm worried about an old high-school bully starting something with me and my girl while drunk? i mean, there will be heaps and heaps of my mates there too, and a few adults. my plan is for me and my girl to just chill with my really good mates and stay out of trouble i guess... this is just my anxiety getting out of hand too, probably. the bad dudes might not even come to the party, let alone start trouble.

yup yup, thanks in advance for any advice on that too h/a

Ironically my friends are getting ready for a superheroes/villains party of their own... you don't live in the boston area do you?

Suggestions? How about Hawkeye and Mockingbird?

Niteowl and Silk Spectre from Watchmen

    Hulk and Betty Ross?

    Rogue and Gambit
    roguegambit.jpg

Edit: I wouldn't necessarily see a problem unless you yourself started something, and regardless, you (should) have your friend to back you up. Unless you've done something to provoke someone else, they might say something among themselves but that would probably be the extent of it. Then again, I'm the perennial optimist, and sound a lot like your friend, so who knows?

On the note of your social paranoia:

I think its warranted, if you have that creeping gut feeling that some one might start shit with you its probably because your being emotionally aware of the past/things that have happened (Note: emotional awareness is a good thing, prevents you from being blank and ignorant to what could go down)

But you have to also keep in mind you'll be at a party. With hopefully more then you, your girlfriend, and these folk who don't like you. If some one starts to yell and scream the greater collective should subdue them. If they don't, then you know who your friends really are.

I wouldn't let something like this stop me from going out and having fun, doing that borders on some sort of disorder level paranoia. If your really worried about this becoming physical and scary, stay more sober then these people. Keep tabs on them in the back of your head and discuss it with your friends in private so they can make sure to aid you if need be, or the entire situation might be avoidable all together if the vote is for them to not come (which should be endearing to you).

You also need to realize if there's going to be a bajillion people at this party, 2 or 3 guys are not going to have the spine to start a fight/yelling match with you for fear of ostracizing themselves from the group.

Plus remember the golden rule if it comes down to it: A bully will back down if you stand up to them. Not letting the fear of their possible actions stop you from coming is the first thing that will make them take a second to see if the grudge is really worth it, because you obviously are more of a man then your fear over their petty issues.

I am in no way licensed to dispense advice, but I have been the host of parties with guests who don't exactly get along, and been in your shoes before. Best thing you can do is forget about it, make sure your close friends know you got a little worry in you, and relax and have fun. No ones going to cold-cock you in the middle of a party unless you did something really really bad.

^^^ yeah, anon the felon, this is how i was going to play it pretty much.
i was going to watch my drinks, and keep my eyes and ears to open to anything suss going on around me.
i was going to stick with my mates and my girlfriend and let them know about the dues i don't feel comfortable around, particularly for my girlfriend so she doesn't get around a dude that might have a go at her for a grudge he has against me.
i'm not going to let this stop me from going to the party.

the party is a few streets away from me. super close. so if the mood goes a bit bad, i'll just walk back to my place with my girl. i wouldn't cower away to anyone, i'd tell em to give it a rest and to fuck off in pretty rapid order, and i'm sure my mates would be right behind me, which is comforting.

thanks for the costume suggestions , cmorrs, i'll talk to my gf about them

The Great Saiyaman and Saiyagirl? This post makes me thankful for the anonymity of the internet, I'd never live such nerdiness down in real life but I completely encourage its use as a costume.

Dress up as 'Italian Spiderman'. And your girlfriend can dress up as the cute scienctist woman.
