[OOC] BSG - You Can't Go Home Again

Are they the lucky ones? That's what you're thinking, isn't it? We're a long way from home. We've jumped way beyond the red line, into uncharted space. Limited supplies, limited fuel. No allies, and now, no hope? Maybe it would have been better for us to have died quickly, back on the Colonies with our families, instead of dying out here slowly, in the emptiness of dark space.

Where shall we go? What shall we do? Life here began out there. Those are the first words of the sacred scrolls, and they were told to us by the Lords of Kobol, many countless centuries ago. And they made it perfectly clear that we are not alone in this universe.

Earth. The most guarded secret we have. The location was only known by the senior commanders of the fleet, and we dare not share it with the public. Not while there was a Cylon threat upon us. For now we have a refuge to go to. A refuge the Cylons know nothing about. It won't be an easy journey. It'll be long, and arduous. But I promise you one thing: on the memory of those lying here before you, we shall find it, and Earth shall become our new home. So say we all!

You Can't Go Home Again will be a Play-By-Post game run here on the Penny-Arcade forums, players permitting. This game will be (most likely) set on Galactica, sometime between Season 1 and 2 of the show (specifics undecided at the moment). We will be trying out the Battlestar Galactica RPG rulebook, as well as supplements (which I have, and players don't need to worry about.)

There will be more fluff as characters are presented and details are ironed out! The game will be character driven as much as it is plot driven, and the fluff and plot will reflect that.

Obviously, having some knowledge about the show is ideal, but not required. A quick note - I haven't before GM'd this system (though Serenity RPG was similar), and so I reserve the right to tweak things, toss in house rules on the fly, and adjust as necessary.
Character Generation

Characters will begin at Veteran level, with 48 Attribute Points, 68 Skill Points, and 4 Trait Points.

Ideally, we will have one character of each occupation, but if you decide 'hell, we'll all be Viper pilots', I'll work with it.

If you don't have the rulebook, that's okay - I'll give you a hand with character creation if you just contact me.
Cast and Crew

El Skid - Junior Lieutenant Jim "Hawkeye" Helix
Hawkeye is one of the old guard of Raptor pilots. He has been through hell and back; Been lost in space numerous times, fought against the Cylons on countless occasions, and generally has managed to defy death despite all odds for years.

As a comrade in arms, he's everything you could want. Loyal to his squadmates and tenacious in the face of adversity.

As a scout pilot, he's the best. His name is well-earned- he's been known to see things the scanners can't even pick up, and a few times he's saved hundreds- even thousands- of lives by sensing a Cylon attack before anyone would have thought possible. Not even he knows how he does it, but his feelings are taken very seriously indeed.

But for all of his upside, Hawkeye is hell for his commanding officer(s). He questions orders he doesn't think are right, and is frequently vulgar in his speech, regardless of who he's talking to. And he has a...thing about Cylons. If something's happening he doesn't understand, it's a Cylon attack, or a Cylon plot...or the person that's standing in his way is a skinjob.

From a social standpoint, Military people of all ranks whisper about his almost supernatural abilities as a scout and pilot, and he's a minor celebrity with the enlisted men... both for his scouting abilities and his flair for getting himself disciplined most every time he's back from a mission- usually in dramatic fashion.

He also has some touchy spots around orders and tactics: in a situation where the best course of action is to leave some people behind, things often get messy. From time to time he disobeys orders and manages to salvage something - or someone- that everyone thought impossible. Sometimes he limps home, lucky to be alive. Regardless, he spends alot of time in the Brig.

This explains why he's spent so much of his career alone in deep space- He's damn good at what he does, and his mouth can't get him into trouble if he's out of radio contact.

But when they need him, he's out and he does his duty. If only he would do it the way he was ordered to...

Valkun - Ensign Allison Lievman, OSI
For what must have been the hundreth time, Natasha looked down at the chronometer loosely attached to her wrist. Just a few minutes now. Hang in there. It didn't exactly suit her taste, but neither did the rest of her outfit. While appropriate for dancing in the middle of a busy nightclub on Caprica, the clothing seemed rather out of place in the grimy confines of a spaceship.

She took a deep sigh, six months of solid investigation and undercover work would all come crashing to a meticulously crafted end. With one casual handstroke, she thumbed the transponder that masqueraded as a platinum hairpin embedded with a burst of sapphires. It had taken a long time to earn their trust. A coy smile played on her ridiculously vibrant ruby lips. These slave traders weren't ones to trust strangers easily, especially when it came to the actual transfer of 'goods', girls abducted from the backward holes of the system to be used as prostitutes and gods know what else in civilized space. However, the leader of the local organization had a reputation for being easily enthralled by the fairer sex, a rumor that turned out to be all too true, and all too easily taken advantage of.

As the jump completed, Detective Lievman, or Natasha Belousov as they knew her, activated the beacon that would lead the Caprican authorities straight to their location. Cautiously, she unhooked the pistol taped to her thigh as the others went about their work. It'd be a simple matter to take custody of the ship. Of course, things rarely go according to plan, and something had just punched a hole right into it. Namely, the remains of the Zeus's Beard they were supposed to be meeting. The ship shook violently as the twisted remains of the smuggler transporter collided into the new arrival. In the distance, the now familiar shape of a Cylon Basestar half hides behind the cloud of human technology and human lives both so easily sundered.

First things first, take control of the ship. And then the second massacre began.

GrimmyTOA - Specialist Geoffrey "Hephaestus" Wilson
They told Geoff, later, that it was a miracle. That something must have intervened on his behalf. That the chances of being called to investigate a sensor glitch in navigation, of his tether holding after the ship was holed, of that last emergency bulkhead snapping shut just in time, of that evac crew hearing his panicked cries through their masks, of him surviving the three-week flight back to Galactica, were too slim to be anything but divinely mandated.

In the aftermath of That Day, Geoff had been absorbed into the crews responsible for running Galactica, his almost preternatural understanding of the ship's systems in high demand by various sections of the technical staff. He had considered returning to the science labs, of course, but the twisting labyrinth in the belly of the beast gave him the perfect place to hide from everything -- and everyone. He became one of the invisible men, toiling away at the myriad tiny tasks that kept Galatica moving and fighting.

Geoff didn't remember any miracles from That Day. He remembered the decompression shattering his eardrums and his leg nearly being wrenched off as he spun into a wall. He remembered the black mouth of space opening wide to swallow him. It was always out there, now. Hungry. Waiting. So he hid, and tried to forget his one brush with adventure.

I'm totally in on this. I've never done a play by post game but I'll never get my non believer friends to play a Galactica RPG with me so I must take advantage of this.

Well, I'll be Boomer soon enough, seeing as we're totally frakked in Darian's game.

Again, if you need help, contact me and we'll work out your character sheet - either way, though, I'd like to see some concepts in here.

To copypaste from a PM to Valkun...

You might be an officer of some sort aboard Galactica, a pilot (raptor pilots are more scout-ish, while Vipers are the combat ships), an engineer keeping everything running, a scientist or doctor, some sort of political leader, a marine...there's a pretty damn varied list. If you have an idea in mind, toss it to me and we'll work out something.

I'm not limiting you at all - hell, if you want to be Random Civillain 325 on the civvie ship Pyxis, more power to you - but your life is going to be sucky and boring.

On the basic mechanics - for those who haven't used the system before.

    ---

There are six primary abilities - three physical ones (Strength, Agility, Vitality) and three mental ones (Alertness, Intelligence, and Willpower). Each has an initial score of anywhere from d2 to d12.

Strength represents physical brawn, how much muscle you have and how well toned it is. Agility covers quickness and physical coordination, both in terms of balance and handeye work. Vitality measures general toughness and health

Alertness represents your ability to observe, understand, and intuit what is going on around you. Intelligence measures brainpower—your ability to think, reason, and remember. Willpower indicates your determination and the forcefulness of your personality.

    ---

Every character has a number of traits (either assets or complications). Assets are positive, giving you some sort of assistance or edge, while complications are the reverse. Lady Luck is an example of an asset, while Phobia is a complication.

    ---

Skills are divided into two types: general skills and specialty skills.

General skills represent broad bases of knowledge. They cover many individual activities, and let characters be competent at a field without being particularly gifted at any one thing. Because
they are so broad, they are also limited: general skills cannot advance beyond d6. Guns, Athletics, and Pilot are examples of general skills.

Specialty skills are much more narrow and focused. The Guns general skill lets you pick up, fire, and handle any small arm. The Guns/Pistol Specialty only covers pistols, but it makes you much more
proficient. Specialties start at d8 and progress upwards from there.

    ---

If you're needing to make a check for some reason, most of the time it will be an attribute plus a skill. Sneaking around might be Agility + Covert/Stealth, while jumping around might be Strength + Athletics/Jumping. An attack will be dependent on the sort - close combat will be Strength and an appropriate skill, while ranged will be Agility or Alertness.

I looked through this game at a bookstore a while back but couldn't gleam what was its format for adventures or types of adventures (player-invented crew and officers was the logical conclusion, but most of the book focused on the Fleet/Collonial culture from an outside perspective). Some of the setting info is a bit off (that military letter-code chart is sloppy), but I really like the series and it's got a lot of potential for roleplaying.

The real question is whether I can comfortably join this game when I play:
    -Weekly D&D campaign
    -Monday boardgame night
    -Dark Heresy once a week
    -GMing PBP Star Wars.

I suppose it's doable; I got time to post during the day. I've got a notion to play a Marine.

So I thought about this and I want to play a medic. We never actually see them on the Galactica, although I'm pretty sure that they have some. They'll probably help out the actual MD's while on the Battlestar and wait for the time when they are needed in battle. We don't know anything about them and exploring their live on board of the Galactica might be interesting.

I don't have the rulebook, but would be interested in playing.

Has the toaster role been filled, yet? :P

    ...

Okay, but seriously... I was thinking something along the lines of a jaded veteran Raptor pilot who has seen it all and is exceedingly paranoid about the Cylons (not sure what timeframe we're playing in, but if it's the bit where the fleet is convinced the Cylons are gone for good, he KNOWS they'll be back. If the Cylons are chasing us, then he sees Cylons everywhere).

A female investigator under either the civilian or military leadership. One who watches the watchers, stamps out corruption from within the organization. Probably the daughter of some politician or officer who does what she does because its expected of her. Definately cares more about keeping things in order and regulation then what is morally right. Her work requires her to be armed and put into dangerous situations from time to time. Basically, some sort of FBI agent in spaaace.

Hey all -- if you need a sub (or, hey, a full-fledged player) let me know. I'd be delighted. I was thinking something along the lines of 'painfully shy engineering type.'

Happy tinkering with the machines in the belly of the beast, but flop-sweating mess if someone so much as looks at him funny.

Two issues: I'm only midway through season one of BSG (shameful, I know, but I don't mind spoilers -- my friends have already taken care of most of them for me, I think) and I don't own any of the relevant books.

He probably he bought them in a single box, and is simply listing each series/season separately rather than 'the miniseries + season 1 set and season 2 set', which is a little clunky.

I'd say the miniseries itself is a little clunky, speaking of which. I watched only portions of it after reports from friends that 'it's not the same as the original it's all pretentious abloo bloo blooo' and wasn't wowed and awed until the first episode. The miniseries is pretty good but it still feels a bit too clean-cut and incongruent with the series' feel when I rewatch it.

The middle of Season 2 is the best.

This is the sort of thing I'm looking for, by the way. Many thanks, El Skid-oo.

If you haven't yet gotten in touch, please do so! I'm available at the moment for a bit.

    Ensign Allison Lievman, OSI

    Character Background:

A third is worked out, just not in a sheet yet. :P

(Sorry I haven't posted in here recently - just collecting materials and talking via PMs. If you haven't gotten in touch with me regarding character creation (or I haven't responded) yet, give me a heads up.)

Sent in my character sketch, Hylian -- hope he's playable, but if he's not let me know.

One of us, one of us, one of us.

I was just looking over El Skid's character sheet, that doesn't look right at all. How can you have D2 in your base skill then a specialization? Don't you need D6 in your general skill before you can take specializations?

This is possible- I've never used the system before- I'll check it out when I get home. I had presumed you could have any level of general skill/specialists skill, but I've been known to make grossly wrong assumptions in the past. :P

Edit- It doesn't make sense to require you be an expert at everything related to a skill before you're allowed to be really good at a subsection of it, though. Why would you have to have d6 worth of hearing, taste and smell in order to have sharp eyesight, as an example?

Whelp, you're totally right. Rereading, you need a d6 to get a specialty. So I'm just gonna retool my skills...

Edit- Edited the changes in above. Thanks Valkun!

So, how long until Straight Laced + Toes the Line + Sadistic + Out for Blood finally causes Allison to snap and throw the rebellious Hawkeye out of an airlock?

Our characters aren't at odds again are they, dear Valkun?

I'm sure we can work something out- Hawkeye is rebelling against the man, and Allison is far to pretty to be the man, right?

Hiruma Oda is just jealous of your character. This is more of a Tigh and Starbuck relationship.

Hmm... Time to try a different tact.

Hawkeye is too pretty to get tossed in the brig, right?
