Ah, the 1990s; they're slowly dying. Tripod is going to close down. It's a free website creation tool, like Geocities or Google Pages etc.
My mum has a site with Tripod, so does anyone have any recommendations on where I can move it to? A similar free website, with very simple editing tools (i.e., no raw HTML whatsoever). I would have picked Google Pages, but they're closing that down for 'Google Sites', which is more wiki-like. Ideally I'd like somewhere that will be around for a good while..
Given the global recession, it’s a safe bet that nobody who does free web hosting will be around a good while. I think it’s a good time for Mum to bit the bullet and start paying for hosting.

It's not the money that's a worry (I'd just put her on some of my web space), it's the creation-tools. She can only cope with the sort of setup where you click "put image here" and then upload through your browser, etc.
I work for Gamesville.com, which is owned by Lycos US just like Tripod and Angelfire. What the TechCrunch article (and its spawn) did not make clear is that Lycos EUROPE (a completely separate entity from Lycos US) is closing down its European version of Tripod.
Lycos.com, Tripod.com, Angelfire.com, Gamesville.com, etc., are not affected because they're all owned by Lycos US, not Lycos EUROPE.
Presuming that your mom's site is hosted at tripod.com and not tripod.co.uk, everything should be fine.
I got an email about this today. I'd completely forgotten that I even had a tripod account. i should try and dig up the details to find out what the hell I have hosted there.
If your mum is with Lycos Europe then there are paid hosting companies that include various 'website building tools'. For example, 1&1 includes WebsiteBuilder with it's hosting packages. (If you go to www.1and1.co.uk and then click on Web Hosting and then scroll down the product features to WebsiteBuilder and click on that it gives you more details of how it works etc.).
