I don't know how to connect my Xbox 360 to a network. I don't have the adapter for it, but isn't there a way to hook it up to the connection on a computer?
If you're actually looking for it to talk to your PC, you can't connect directly. You would have to use a hub/router, and after that I don't know, as I doubt they would talk without software help of some kind.

Well you can get a crossover cable to connect the PC and xbox directly. They would then both need manually assigned IPs. Physical networking aside, that's easy.
But as was said, the xbox was not made to talky with your pc like another pc, if you have a modded xbox, then sure, lots of stuff is possible.
It should just ask you for the basic information. Name, credit card number, etc. All pretty self explanatory. Wouldnt you have to go through all that to actually buy the gold membership anyways?
Fire up the 360 console and then goto the dashboard, in one of those screens it will ask you to connect to live or something, do it. It will then prompt you to set up a Live membership and then you choose redeem code, then enter the code that came with your box and it will activate Gold year membership. From there you just enter all your information and you should be gold.
See it asks me to set up the gamer tag first, which I did, and then it asks me to put in the pin number of the credit card that I used to purchase it online...which I never did to begin with.

No you are doing it through the wrong setup, you have to select the Redeem Code one, otherwise its thinking you want to purchase it online. Once you select the Redeem Code one it will let you enter your code.
I am in the same boat as you, and it never asked me for a CC number.
5th option-Join Xbox live
-wants me to create a gamer tag
-wants me to type in credit card number. (It's telling me to confirm identity by typing in the last digits of my credit card [that I didn't use], my name, phone number and postal code. It goes straight to that)
Okay. I'm gonna try and sign out and walk through it that way.

Where do I go from there?

Highlight the section that's highlighted there (your gamercard, with bucket0mischief, gamerscore, zone, etc. showing). Hit A.
Go down to Account Management. Hit A.
("This will exit your current session, etc." - hit up, to highlight yes, then Hit A).
You'll be on Memberships. Hit A.
Xbox Live Gold Membership (or something along those lines) will be highlighted. Hit A.
2 clicks down to "Redeem Code." Hit A.
Enter the 25-character code from your prepaid card (there should be SOMETHING in that box you have with a code on it).
I don't have a prepaid card to help you from there, so hopefully you can figure it out from there.
Hope that helps.

Okay, hit your guide button. Hit A. 5th option down (second from the bottom) should be Account Management.
Edit: again, assuming you're signed in. Also assuming you're connected to Live, I suppose.
