Simple question: is it good? I've read reviews of it but I'm a little hesitant to trust reviews as on more than one occasion I've bought games that are apparently very good but found them horrid to play and quickly gave up and left them to be fed upon by whatever it is that lives under my bed.
So I thought I'd ask on here to get the opinions of people that play the game to get a personal touch to the possible recommendations. Is it worth buying and should I buy it on its own or as part of the Orange Box deal?
Easily GOTY 2007. Definitely pick up L4D while you're at it.
Uhh I'd wait around with L4D to be honest. While the Orange Box is just such a ridiculously good deal with such a great variety in games that there's just no way to not love it, Left for Dead is only one game, and a more expensive one at that.
Orange Box is great but only if you don't have any of it or have not played it.
If you like FPS then you should enjoy it.

I got more play out of L4D alone than the entire orange box, but then again, I'm an obsessed zombie fan.
Edit: But don't get me wrong, orangebox and TF2 are fantastic games, like better than 90% of the tripe on the market by a large margin, but L4D is just that much better for me.

For me Left 4 Dead is probably out of the question as I admittedly get freaked out really easily (wow I'm such a wuss) and since I couldn't make it through Ravenholm on Half-Life 2 I doubt i'll be able to get through Left 4 Dead the first time, let alone playing it back through countless times just to see how the AI decides to surprise and scare the shit out of me next

If you want a genuinely good online shooter that can be competitive and really trained at, TF2 is gonna be your bet. It's the only good team-based shooter on the market today.
L4D rocks, but doesn't have the same depth or appeal. It's also not the least bit scary because you're surrounded by 3 other people. It's a constant adrenaline rush.

Never ever play/install/look at/think about playing F.E.A.R then lol.
But thats a shame, Left4Dead is a marvel of gaming.

Correct me if i'm wrong but F.E.A.R is the one with that little girl ghost with the massive psychic abilities, no? My mate told me about that one day a little while ago and I nearly passed out just hearing about it. On a seperate note: I really need to get less cowardly and wussy. It's just embarrassing
Right. Orange Box ordered from Amazon. I just hope you guys are right or I'll feed you all to the thing under my bed.
At this point in time, so long since orange box was released, I'm still amazed at the amount of people that don't know how glorious that package really is.

Alien imposter. Pretender. I'll keep you safe now. Close to my heart.

Yeah I'm kind of out of sync with the rest of the world. I never see new movies on time except in rare cases. I never get games when they first come out. And my music taste is stuck in the 80s (weird since I was only born in 91)

That is correct it is. I am a huge horror buff and that game even made me jump out of my chair fairly often.
Left4Dead is less scary and more just intense.
Expert especially can tire you out if you are all into it.

It really is. Multiplayer gaming is in a sad and pathetic state from what it was six years ago.
What out there offers a deep, challenging team-based multiplayer? I don't play console games, but I'm 90% sure that there's nothing worth playing that actually has a community on the PC. Halo, supposedly, has some good multiplayer but I only ever got to play the snore-fest DM modes.
Call of Duty gets old after an hour, all the UT games have dead communities last I saw, along with the Battlefield and Enemy Territory series both being more or less kaput now. Except for BF2, I hear, which was also not a very fun game at all.
The only two multiplayer games in the past few years that have been worth the time of day for me are Quake 3 and TF2 and that's kind of sad. I guess all anybody wants is sprint, crouch and shoot at man.
if you have any competitive edge in you at all, you will really, REALLY enjoy TF2.
I used to be a CS addict in high school, put down FPSs for a while, and recently got back into the genre through TF2.
I bought it on a whim and haven't looked back since. It is such a fun game.
The only thing I will say about it though is if you are as competitive as I am, you may one day find yourself hating the notion of playing on certain public servers only because the quality of play is so bad. Like... you individually will do well - you will always be in top 3, but your team will be horrendous and thus, you lose.
- engineers that don't bother hitting their sentries to make them build faster; they don't put up dispensers at all
- spies that cloak right IN FRONT OF your team and no one notices
- soldiers that shoot rockets straight ahead rather than on the ground
- medics that run to the front line right next to you swinging their bonesaw at the air rather than healing you to build up uber
- people that play sniper and never shoot anyone, ever.
- pyros that do not spy check
- heavies just waltz out in the open all the time and get their heads popped like ticks
- scouts that never help cap points or push carts, or really even know how to use a scattergun
- demos that seemingly refuse to take out sentries that would be so easily destroyed by their stickies
i swear on most pubs I spend most of the time assessing what is stopping us from moving forward (sentries, lots of heavies, sniper fire) and just pick a class that counters that in order to help the team. meanwhile we have 4 pyros 3 snipers and no medics.
It is a team based game but it is disappointing that no matter how epically good you are... an entire team of people is just too difficult to take on when your team acts like a rolling ball of morons.

what in the world
I can't even begin to address this post, it has to be a fakepost
What out there offers a deep, challenging team-based multiplayer?
Uh, Left4Dead.
not very deep and doesnt really have the replayability of tf2. its a fun game, but not what the guy is looking for i dont think.
why did you order it from amazon instead of just buying it off steam?
I have to disagree, I love TF2 don't get me wrong, but it's about as deep as a kiddie pool. It is hardly any different than any other team shooter, IMO.
its as deep as you want to let it get. theres times when its a spamfest, but theres also times when it's incredibly complex especially when you get down to 6v6 or 9v9 highlander (one of each class) matches when it shows how full it really is. l4d is a great coop game, but i wouldnt consider it fully multiplayer. vs is a hell of a lot of fun and needs teamwork to be effective, but its not the same type of teamwork as tf2 of bf2 (which was a fun game f u falafel)
It is hardly any different than any other team shooter, IMO.
wat
I would guess from this that you have played very little TF2, and never played any class enough to get good at it.
Anyway, L4D is a great campaign and I enjoyed playing through it with my friends, but I didn't like playing the infected enough to get into versus. You have one your one trick, and once you've done it you lose control of your character. That's not something I want to see in a fast-paced FPS.

Your guess would be wrong, friend.
Granted I stopped playing a while ago, but it got repetitive to me. Maybe I'm just picky or something, I dunno.
I did league play for a while as well.

all this tells me is that you really aren't paying attention to what's going on around you in tf2 then. If you ever really consistently play to win, you'll start hitting invisible envelopes in your skill and won't know why. TF2 has all of the tactics of a shooter (being able to point and click really well, crouch to trick people, sneak behind them to ambush, etc.), with a LOT more strategy (where's the engie, who's going to flank that sniper, are we spy checking, everyone push A first, protect the medic at all costs, remember to push ubers off the sentries, 1 pyro 1 sniper go demo/soldier late game to jump cap the final point). I could go on and on, but you get the point.
Your guess would be wrong, friend.

I sure hope so.
even the "horrible" ps3 version is tons of fun (shut up i have the pc version but i can't run it)
Thank God.
And besides, if you get nervous and freeze up you've got 3 other people watching your back.
I'd definitely say that it is inferior to TF2, though.
TF2 is the best game ever
Before you ask in the TF2 thread, the steam group is pretty useless, just add the servers to your favorites. :P
