In this thread, we appreciate old skool PC-games that ran on DOS. You know, that black screen full of text on which you inputted text to get all cool stuff to happen. The same DOS on which we fought with config.sys and autoexec.bat to get enough conventional memory to run latest games. On more serious note, DOS-era was exciting time for multiple reasons. During that time, gaming was rapidly evolving, and new ideas were introduced on almost daily basis. Publishers were more adventurous, thanks to small team sizes, and the fact that games could be developed in six months or less. Games were also less buggy, as patching them wasn't feasible. And thanks to lack of Internet, overdosage of hype rarely happened (but then again, you had only limited choices for getting information about the game).
As always, don't link to abandonware, or try to hotlink pictures from Mobygames. To get ball rolling, here is one of my personal favorites games for the era:
Ultima Underworld

What can I say. Produced by Warren Spector and Richard Garriot, it was first first-person WRPG with fluid movement. It was so much beyond its time that it wasn't even funny. You controlled Avatar who had been wrongly accused about kidnapping of baron's daughter, and thrown into Stygian Abyss to rescue her. While exploring Abyss, Avatar meets remnants of failed colony, and learns that there is much more behind the kidnapping than meets the eye. The abyss is vast place consisting nine levels, but fortunately Avatar isn't just limited to walking around, as he could jump, swim, and even fly around. And even you got lost, Avatar was always carrying his trusty map on which you could even write.
Hypnotically inclined.

It's freeware now.
Darn it, I was going to say that. Except I had Sopwith II, I don't know what the difference was.
But does it support my ATI Radeon? :?:
Epic Pinball suuucks! Pinball Fantasies 4Lyfe! :P
Also, I loved the Raptor demo.
This game took up a small part of my childhood.
Never really understood the appeal of the game. Probably because it was so clunky. But I did find it hilarious that local gaming magazine had given following tip: "Put big ramp on the end of the road, and put turning bridge as a next block. Your opponent always flies off". What kind of tip that it is for game which main appeal is doing your tracks?
Not going to happen, as Sid Meier personally doesn't like the game. I did love it, tho'.
Prior to that the family owned an Amiga, and after that Windows began its rise to dominance and the death of MS-DOS based titles. In short, I missed out on most of that particular era. Not that I mind, most Amiga ports were superior to their MS-DOS versions.. at least, until Windows started winning.
Yeah, Amiga 500 was king on anything that required fast scrolling. But games like Ultima VII and Wing Commander were downright impossible.
The best part was taking the fastest car, then building a track with a massive jump in it somewhere. At 6 years old this was an awesome experience.
Yeah, I liked spaceships as a kid.
Yeah, those early 90's when Commodore was starting to disintegrate and geniuses were pouring their attention into the x86 is when the PC started its rise to dominance, and poor old Amiga got stuck playing Lemmings.
It was kind of a neat time, just in the sense of competition between hardware and how vastly different the same game would perform on different architectures. People argue about PS3 vs 360 now, and it doesn't compare at all to then.
Once we got the 286 I started collecting PC games, but like I said, Civilization outshone them all.

I remember being 5 and watching my mom play and seeing her get shot because she let the suspect get her gun inside the jail.

I had planned doing Wing Commander Let's Play, but the game still doesn't work satisfactory with DosBox. Everything else works well, except controls that aren't smooth at all. But goddamn I was beast at Wing Commander. In the end of Secret Mission 2, I had over 500 confirmed kills.
I remember I had this really kickass joystick to play Wing Commander games with. Man, those were some good days.
I had this kickass joystick that I used with Deathtrack. Didn't last too long.
keen dreams can kiss my ass
Scorched Earth.
Betrayal at Krondor was a personal favourite of mine. I bought one of the re-releases of the game off Ebay for $10 a few years back when I was still running a machine with Windows 98 that would let the game play. On my current PC, I don't think it'll work at all.
Steam: TheArcadeBear
Hmm Terra Nova, the best Starship Troopers game that doesn't have the license.
Eff Yea. Rome Total war eat your heart out.
Countless good times were had trying to survive those Chariot races. I dont think I ever made it more then ten seconds in one race.

Slightly off topic, but you guys should try Jets 'n' Guns if you haven't already. It takes more than a bit from Tyrian, but with slightly shinier graphics, and horizontal scrolling instead of vertical scrolling.
And I know this is off-topic, but for those of you that need to get your trajectories on and have access to an iPhone... check out iShoot (lite).
Oh yeah, back when Bullfrog were still kicking, they kicked it with cyberpunk style
This game is simply begging for a modern day remake.
That was some pretty good edutainment, though.
Also I had an irresponsible uncle who let me play Doom at his house all the time. Those were good times for a 5 year old.
God fucking damn it I wanted Tyrian so bad. I played it at one of my brother's friend's house when I was in 6th grade and was like, "HOLY SHIT THIS IS AMAZING."
But I was stuck with Raptor.
Edit - FUCK.
Never played Elite II, but of course I recognize it from the screenshots. First release was so ridiculously buggy that it borderlined comedy. Local gaming magazine even went so far that it banned any user sent Elite II tricks that were based on exploiting game's bugs.
Did you ever play Syndicate Wars? Pretty good game, but ball-bustingly hard. And the engine was incredible for its time. You could blow fucking everything to pieces from tanks to skyscrapers.
I was pretty good at X-Wing too. On my third playtime, I got medal of bravery on my first mission, because I had shot 40 Tie-Fighters down (if you wait for while, frigate jumps into area). And I also destroyed STD Invincible three times during first Tour of Duty by exploiting shield generators. When game was originally released, it was hard only because there wasn't computer that could run game smoothly.
Terra Nova is one of great gaming regrets of mine. It was so hyped on local media, but I never had copy. I wonder how well it runs with Dosbox...
EDIT: Merged few posts into one.
Boy we had no idea what what was about to hit us did we? :P
I know First Encounters was meant to have all the bugs and be unplayable, I never had one problem with Elite II though..
