The GOP would be stupid not to approve Clinton because she will give them HELL for the rest of her term in the senate.

CNN's front page political ticker link says that a GOP Senator is blocking clinton's nomination, but there's nothing on the ticker page itself and the Senate doesn't convene until 3.

    I am confused.

It's "Big" John Cornyn smacking all those lesser states down again.

IIANM the Senator isn't blocking it per se, but requiring a non-voice vote (which can be demanded by simply denying unanimous consent). Its meaningless except in that it will require people to record a vote.

. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent.

Add in a hearty eat a dick, how the fuck do you go from commonsense to the federal AWB.

They also don't have enough information, for when they're actually trying to do the right thing. Despite medical records supposedly being transferred to each provider, doctors often don't know every other treatment that a patient is receiving, or has received in the past, so they don't know the whole picture and can't prescribe the best treatment which will lead to higher costs.

Changes to address these problems seem like they would be a lot cheaper than expanding Medicaid eligibility, but would very hard to get passed.

Well, it's easier to get doctors and hospitals to comply with new procedures when they're getting government dollars. You probably can't pass a law that says "You need to adopt a standardized electronic medical record system." But you can expand Medicaid and Medicare and then say, "If you want to keep sucking on the government's teat, you need to adopt a Medicaid/Medicare-compatible EMR system." Then all the big hospitals adopt compatible systems, and smaller clinics and private practices start to see that trading records with the big hospitals is easier if they hop on the bandwagon too.

There's that path (which is already roughly in place with PQRI and the eprescirbing initiatives), and the fact that the bailout is going to include anywhere between $20 and $50 billion aimed exclusively at getting every healthcare provider up on an EMR.

Healthcare reform really is going to happen, and I'd be extremely shocked if it isn't done well before 2010 so the Democrats can run on it.

As a more general prediction, Id guess within 100 days we have:

    The stimulus bill passed
Gitmo in the process of closing or closed, with prisoners transferred to the US
The first units out of Iraq and the first reinforcements in Afghanistan
Multiple healthcare bills introduced in the Senate (and possibly the House) with serious negotiations under way
Some feel good legislation (Don't Ask Don't Tell, maybe card check, etc)
All of Bush's executive orders publicly review, and at least a wave or two of Obama's publicly reviewed and signed

And, though I doubt we'll see it, I'd love to see some serious discussion about how exactly the wrong doing over the last 8 years will be handled and the responsible parties dealt with. I could honestly even live with a Truth and Reconciliation style solution, where all the people involved are publicly called before congress and given immunity for full and unconditional disclosure of everything that happened.

It needed to finish the war so Obama's first statement on Israel/Gaza wasn't "What the fuck are you doing, Israel?" and instead will be "Alright guys, it's time to come together and let's figure out how to settle this." Which almost certainly won't happen but looks better for all involved.
