Drivin' Tuneage

My mate asked me if I could find him some cool drivin music since he just got his first car and he's as giddy around it as a school girl is around Robert Pattinson. Any ideas? Cause I've only got one so far:

There are albums dedicated to this sort of music - you might want to check the tracks on those for inspiration.

    What about the Cars soundtrack?

I've done some fairly extensive research on this subject, and I've identified three major schools of thought.

Songs about cars and driving them: Always a popular option for driving, as they tend to get the blood pumping and get one excited about the act of driving. Since your buddy is a new driver, I'm thinking this is a good place to start.

In addition to the ones listed in this thread already (Molly Hatchet, Eve 6, Queen esp. "I'm in love with my car"), I'd add:

    Doors - Roadhouse blues
Primus - Jerry was a racecar driver
    Deep Purple - Highway Star
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Call Me the Breeze

Famous Sing-Along Songs: These are for folks who like to sing in their car. Often songs with easy-to-discern lyrics and epic themes. My girlfriend is a popular proponent of this philosophy, going so far as to say "If I don't know the lyrics, it's not a good road trip song." Popular choices include:

    Don McClean - American Pie
    Elton John - Tiny Dancer
    Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
    David Bowie - Rebel Rebel

Whole Albums: For a lot of people, long drives are the only time they get to listen to music for extended periods, so they take the opportunity to explore albums which really should be taken "as a whole." Could be your favorite albums, albums that others have recommended, or "classics" that you ought to have heard by now. I'd recommend:

Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon
    The Clash - London Calling
The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
    Daft Punk - Alive 2007
Rancid - ...And out come the wolves

Cake has some fun driving songs: going the distance, stickshifts and safetybelts, satan is my motor, long line of cars...

I'm sure they have more, that's off the top of my head though.

There are good driving songs about driving and good driving songs that aren't about anything like driving, and which is best depends what I'm doing. If I'm driving a long way on the highway I like to throw on Gorillaz or the Bebop soundtrack, something pleasant, with a good rhythm and upbeat to keep me awake but not so energetic that I feel compelled to speed too much.

Any rock song with a really good, fairly long instrumental.

Green Grass and High Tides by Outlaws is great driving music (10-ish minute long song, great riffs)

Either version of Arcade Fire's No Cars Go. A non-acoustic version of Radiohead's Killer Cars. Something from The Go! Team's first album. I think those would all work well enough.

My big selection of albums (I still tend to buy CD's because much of my music is best as a set, I see them somewhere, they play in the car, and I can burn it to my comp and send it along to my family):
    Facing Future by Israel Kemekathisnameiswaytoolong
    Flor de Serena
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex OST
    Monty Python's Spamalot
    Young Frankenstein Original Cast Recording

The Drowsy Chaperon is also quite entertaining, and one of the people involved with the show has released her own CD that is also very funny.

About the only time I listen to Quadrophenia nowadays is on road trips, but that probably has more to do with it being so damn long than with it being particularly suited to driving.
