I did notice something: if you have a tac squad, for instance (and this happened tonight) with a sergeant, so it has 4 rather than 3 guys. The squad was killed except for the last guy. I ran them back to my razorback to reinforce, but I could only reinforce them back up to three men, including the sergeant. That doesn't seem right.
So I'm thinking of actually buying SS tomorrow to get into the beta, is there anything I need to do after I buy SS? Do I need to install it or can I just download the beta over steam as soon as I buy it?

Yeah, Same here; only it's sometimes 2 dudes with a sergeant, and sometimes just 3 dudes. The sergeant upgrade shows up on the abilities slot, but clicking it does nothing.

Were you close to your population cap? I was trying to reinforce my warp spiders earlier today but could only go up to three. The reinforce button said pop cap had been reached and I was at 98/100.
Dreadnaughts turn battles. Seriously, in one game we went from losing bad to me bringing out a dread and winning. They seem to kick the ass of anything else on the field. they do die eventually, and they tie up you HQ for quite some time, but wow. Walk next to beside or behind vehicle and punch it twice, move on to the next thing.
Scouts are actually useful, I haven't made any snipers yet, but the shot gun can rip it up. Especially when you stealth then walk around behind the heavy weapon squad. Boom, shotgun to head.
I'm seemingly inept at find cover for my marines, every time I make a tac squad they die very quickly. Ditto with heavy weapon teams. It also seems that heavy weapon teams can NOT set up inside buildings, or at least as far as I could figure out.
The turrets that the tech marine builds can be very useful for denying avenues for your enemy, at 50/30 they are a huge power drain, but set up a couple with interlocking fields of fire and your good for a while.
Speaking of power... you should aim to capture and upgrade power first thing, it's huge.
Tried orbital bombardment, it's pretty cool and I wiped out a couple of goomba's squads with it, but I don't think it was worth the cost. Or even close to worth the cost. On the other hand, I can see where using it to take out a heavily defended position in a hurry could be worth it, but I'd rather have a venerable dread on the field.
The special resource needs to grow faster, I normally didn't get close to enough to use more than one ability in a game.
What exactly happens when you level up, what do you get out of it?

Man, as far as I know it's impossible to get anywhere near the pop cap as the Space Marines. I never have the resources to field more than 4-6 squads and a vehicle or two.
So, pre-ordering over steam will give you access to this beta, correct? I read that this was true, but before I dropped 50 bucks on the pre-order, I wanted to see if anyone else here has tried this/can confirm it.

preordering does nothing for the beta. buying soulstorm for $7.50 does.

Has anyone else here pre-ordered? The steam page for Dawn of War 2: Multiplayer Beta says...
Owners of the Warhammer® 40,000™: Dawn of War®: Soulstorm™ add-on pack and those who pre-order Dawn of War II via Steam will be granted advance access to the beta starting January 21.
I don't doubt your word all on things relic, Dareth, but this seems legit. I don't seem myself using soulstorm, so this would be great.
Game runs surprisingly well, I'm impressed, I was worried it was going to destroy my PC.
Combat is fun, skirmishing feels a bit empty. I might just need some more time to really understand the flow of the game, but the lack of important strategic points makes map control feel a bit empty, and seems to encourage sneaking fast units around to constantly poke at points over actually fighting for nodes.
I'll probably be picking it up based on my time with the demo, but I wasn't as amazed as I was hoping. Feels really fun but unpolished, I hope that changes.

Are you 100% on this? I've just pre-ordered and it appears that it's letting me get the beta. Perhaps it's just letting me pre-load it or somesuch though.

I am not 100% on this. I am not even 10% on this, and suspect I am wrong.
I bought the preorder off steam, and got the key.
I refused to buy soulstorm just for the beta.
Oh yea, Dareth, does DoW2 has some kind of hardware detection that locks down the graphics setting? I had to go to my configuration file to set things on high manually.
I am running this with all settings low, 1024x768, and it looks quite a bit better than DoW.
1v1, at least, is very playable. Have to go to bed but will try to up settings tomorrow.

So, as lots of people can confirm, I can't play with people online. The game just crashes randomly in the lobby or during the loading screen.
However playing against however many computers in a skirmish works without a hitch and with all settings to the highest possible.
Even with DMZ on my router it didn't work, I am pretty much out of ideas.

So I caved and bought another copy of SS over steam. I install the beta. Now it's saying something about not finding a supported hardware rendering device. Is there any way to fool the system? Or am I fucked?
er just so you nkow you can register the retail version of SS onto steam and get into the beta
OR
you can just pre-order DoW2 over Steam and get into the beta without having to buy SS at all

yes this is true, I did it tonight. DO NOT BUY SS there no reason to
somebody put that in the thread title or something

I would bang and complain on the Relic boards about that - just to bring attention to the problem.
Tried it again now, same problem.
I will adhere to your advice.

ok so thoughts
I had time to do a quick 1v1 skirmish vs a Easy PC. We were both using marines.
usually Easy PCs in relic games ar epretty easy so I was just messing around, I had almost won and then all of a sudden the fucking PC had a ton of squads by his base he wasn't using so i got close and they all activated and then it became a stalemate.
I'm not sure if I like DoW2 yet.... I only ever had enough resources to have 2 or 3 squads plus a vehicle or two. This wasn't really enough to leave any of them defending my victory points so the AI would come in to the lowest one and poach it from me, then some battle would happen in the middle and the AI would poach the top one.
I'd get htem back but then the same thing happens, etc..
I need to play it more, very interesting so far and it looks great so i'm sure I'll end up loving it, but the first impressions are really weird.

Not that I've seen, maybe just a bug with steam.
And I agree with your points on the control points. Defending seems pretty useless for reasons mentioned previously. You seem to be better off keeping a highly mobile force that can take points quickly while the enemy is doing the same to yours. Then jumping on them from behind when they attack your power nodes. Actually keeping your troops on any one point is just an invitation for them to get slaughtered.
Edit:
Also, does anyone know if units can fire while they are in a transport, or do you have to disembark them?

the problem with that is that none of the units seem that quick! so it's hard to keep them super mobile, this is only going to get worse on the bigger maps (i was playing a 1v1 map and it was already a hassle)
I need the try the other races as well but I had to get off the computer as my wife went to bed (office is connected to the bedroom)
First night impressions. Things seem pretty good. No glaring imbalances in units, unless you count the whole small arms doing nothing to vehicles thing.
Also, I finally found a good reason to use your infiltration. Eldar.
My Lictor had to infiltrate a bunch in order to take down those shuriken cannon weapon teams. Sheesh. They seem to be the new rangers (for breaking unit purposes) Also, I never saw any rangers played. How are they?

oh also I'm able to play perfect in 1680x1050 with graphics set to Ultra. my specs are:
Core 2 Duo E6600
Radeon HD4870
4 gigs of Ram
Vista 64bit
I'm surprised people with slower core 2s/slower radeons are having problems. People have the newest drivers right?
Played a quick 3v3 skirmish today, and the game seems fun. Force Commander was a little squishy, and I didn't have the resources to try out many of the units before I won.
The only problem I have had is the sound seems to stutter a lot, but I haven't updated my drivers for a bit and I'll probably be able to fix it by playing around with the settings.
Marines are pretty goddamn slow, but you don't really notice it that much on the 6p maps, except the devastator squads and dreadnoughts, everything else moves fast enough.
I dunno, I need to play with them some more, but at first glance they don't seem very balanced, too many disadvantages for not being that much better.
