Splinter Cell: CT on GC crashing?

so splinter cell:CT on the gamecube has crashed twice now in the middle of saving for me and I'm starting to worry about why it's doing it and if it's relatively normal for it to every now and again just stop at the saving screen. has there been any history of the game having problems or is this likely to be a one off with a dodgy game i've picked up?
also what should i do when something crashes while saving? is there anything better then pushing the power button. i know it says, strictly, not to push the power button during saving but there's not much i can do. i've tried waiting it out but it just stops, there's nothing i con do but turn it off and start the game again.
my gamecube and memory card are in perfectly good condition, so it's not really anything on the hardware side of things.
