Having just looked up the definition of a Muggle on wikipedia, you'd be correct! And here was me thinking it was a small furry creature, somewhat like an Ewok. :S

But still, original question stands: is Muggling it up ok? Don't want to make too many waves at my first PAX. But ludicrously excited already...

It's true. I went last year in plainclothes and managed to have a good time (and plenty of folks did the same), but robes improve any social occasion (See: Arthur Dent, Hugh Hefner, The Dude) and I'll be dressed for the occasion this year.

From reading this thread it sounds like there's alot of hufflepuffs :D I love my house! Hardworkers==awesome drinking skillz in my past experience. So go Hufflepuff! (I totally did not know this was going on last year, I would have loved to join in)

I don't think the date is official yet, as we're waiting for info on the date of the Pre-PAX Dinner, so the two events don't overlap like they did last year, and I would assume the Dinner will be the night before.

Hi! Welcome fellow Hufflepuff! I don't think I've seen you around!

Yeah, Thursday is the day, so be sure to be in town that day! Also, when ElectricTurtle comes back from his PAX forum vacation, you should sign up for the Pre-PAX dinner as well! It's a blast! =) And if you've never been to Seattle or never seen the sights, join up on the Magical Mystery Tour as well! (Speaking of which, I need to talk with Nomad about when we're going to start posting up stuff, I keep forgetting to start that party =) )

So, there seems to be a ludicrous lack of Gryffindors on the tournament tour. Very well, I shall throw my lot in with that Heroic House. Cunning, intellect, hard work? None of THESE are necessary to win a drinking contest. No, bravery will win the night, along with blind ox-stubbornness! I look forward to tipping my glass among the giants of last year's tournament...if I actually make it to PAX '09 :|

It'd be nice to try American beer that isn't Budweiser!

Then you are in luck, my friend. Budweiser has been purchased by a Belgium brewery! Now you can try Budweiser beer that isn't American.

Had a smashing time last year. I'll have to consult my notes to remember it all. Count me in.

Do I get to pick a house, or is there some kind of Sorting Hat going around?

This reasoning makes a pretty compelling argument. Too bad I'll probably be drinking with a different friend group to really participate, unless the pub crawl stops at whatever place we'll be.

So it turns out I did have an encounter with the sorting hat.
He had been sitting in line waiting for the other first-years to be sorted, rather depressed to be forced to play a crappy cellphone game to pass the time, but pleased at the score he was racking up on Tetris when his concentration was shattered by a hand shaking him by the shoulder.

"Slacktron!" shouted McGonagall, right in his face.

The Blackberry made the horrible razzing sound of the level ending in failure. The stupid Russian bricks had won again.

    "Who? Me?"

    She nodded.

He would have corrected her for saying his name incorrectly, it being Ron Slackt, but it seemed hardly worth the effort. As he passed McGonagall, he looked at her attendance page. The scribe put his first name in the last name column and his last name in the first. And run them together.

    Whatever.

He pushed the hat out of the way and sat down on the stool.

McGonagall cleared her throat. "Put on the hat so you can be sorted."

    "Me?"

    "Yes, you."

"I've got to pick up this hat and put it on my head?"

"Oh for goodness's sake!" McGonagall picked up the hat and stuffed it over Slacktron's head.

The hat constricted and considered a moment.

"Hmm," said a small voice in his ear. "Difficult. Very difficult."

"A mind easily distracted, nearly unable to focus: Ravenclaw is out."
"Lazy, too. Perhaps one of most slothful in the history of Hogwarts. Hufflepuff would destroy you. There's talent, oh my goodness, but so misdirected! Combined with zero motivation to prove yourself... so where shall I put you?"

Slacktron remembered something he had read on the Express, driven to read by the death of his DS's battery. At least I know it won't be Slytherin.

"Slytherin?" said the hat. "You could do well in that house. It's all here in your head, and Slytherin could help you on your way to... well, wherever it is you'll wind up."

Slacktron would have repeated, "not Slytherin" based on what he had overheard from that giant bearded groundskeeper, whats-his-name, but he was focusing on how the stitching of the brim was rubbing up against his enormous nose and how, should the hat continue talking, it was likely to take the skin right off it. Quite frankly, he wished the abrasive headgear would stop blathering and do its job.

"Stop blather...?" objected the hat, tightening up and mashing Slacktron's nose. "Very well, SLYTHERIN! You deserve each other."

"Well, what the fuck?" answered Slacktron. "My parents are Muggles."

"Get moving, jerk," demanded the hat.

Slacktron got up and walked toward where he suspected the Slytherin table was, but fell off the stage and onto his face due to the fact he couldn't see where he was going.
It was only after he got back to his feet that McGonagall removed the sorting hat from his head, Slacktron being too distracted to do it himself.

"Thank goodness you're not going to be my problem," she said with a disapproving look.

Slacktron took a seat with his fellow Slytherins at the table. A blond boy with a lisp spoke to him.

"You're big," he said, "and apparently not too bright. I could have use for you."
Slacktron looked at the kid and the big stupid-looking fellow next to him.
"That's Crabbe," indicated the blond kid. "What do you say we team up?"
"Meh," said Slacktron, his attention now focused on the improbability of the floating candles that filled the hall. "Sounds like a lot of work. Not my style."
"Fine," said the blond boy, turning away. "Who's that, Crabbe?"
    "Goyle."
They scooted off to another part of the table.

Cripes, thought Slacktron, still surveying the room. Floating and illuminated shit everywhere and not a single electrical outlet. He checked his Blackberry one more time. No web browsing available. Hell, there wasn't even off-network cellphone coverage. Zero bars.
He pulled out his DS and flipped it open. The screens remained black, the batteries still dead.
He scanned the room again. No outlets, no network ports. This had to be the least wired campus in the world.
It hit him now that he was facing seven years without a moment of on-line gaming. Damn. What was he going to do, study?
    What a shithole.

So it looks like I'll be sporting the Green-and-Silver of jolly old Slytherin for this tournament.

Anyone else remember their turn under the hat?

Pardon me, I need to get 2-4 people into an adjustable rate mortgage they can't afford, rescue a kitten from a well lit cave which may or may not have spiders, get my taxes in order early this year, and drink four shots of 151.
