Elite Beat Agents: Agents are GO... to GDC!

edited January 2007 in Games and Technology
I'm making this thread because the EBA thread is either on page 10 or so or has been pruned. Somebody necroposted in the Ouendan Game On Thread while I was making this, but I figure it'd be better to have all the info in one clean post for the sake of everyone.

NEWS! 1/23/07 (or so)

Keiichi Yano of iNiS will be giving a lecture about the making of Ouendan and EBA at this year's Game Developer's Conference. More info here:

http://www.gdconf.com/news/new_session_from_ouendan_to_he.htm

What is it?

Elite Beat Agents is a rhythm game developed by iNiS (Gitaroo Man) for the Nintendo DS. It is a "spiritual successor" to the Japanese-only game Ossu! Tatake! Ouendan!, which sold very poorly in Japan but has been a popular import in the U.S. and Europe. The gameplay is identical to the earlier game and the graphical style similar, but the music, scenarios, and actual art are all new.

What's it sound like?

The following songs are known to be in EBA. Please note that most, if not all of the songs will be covers.

1. Walkie Talkie Man - Steriogram
2. ABC - Jackson Five
3. Sk8er Boi - Avril Lavigne
4. I Was Born to Love You - Queen
5. Rock This Town - Stray Cats
6. Highway Star - Deep Purple
7. Y.M.C.A. - Village People
8. September - Earth, Wind and Fire
9. Canned Heat - Jamiroquai
10. Material Girl - Madonna
11. La La - Ashlee Simpson
12. You're the Inspiration - Chicago
13. Survivor - Destiny's Child
14. Without a Fight - Hoobastank
15. Believe - Cher
16. Let's Dance - David Bowie
17. Jumpin Jack Flash - Rolling Stones
18. Makes No Difference - Sum 41
19. The Anthem - Good Charlotte

What's it look like?

Here's some screenshots:

elite-beat-agents-20060915060022973.jpgelite-beat-agents-20060901031548042.jpgelite-beat-agents-20060915060027630.jpgelite-beat-agents-20060915060025973.jpg

You can also view full gameplay videos of the Babysitter (Walkie Talkie Man and Homeward Bound (Highway Star) levels on Easy, as well as partial videos of four other levels, here.

And if for some reason you'd like to see the commercial, it's here.

Where can I try it out?

Since it's a "Touch Generations" game, Nintendo may well put it on demo kiosks, but they have not yet to my knowledge. However, if you already have a DS, you can access a DS Download Station in any store that has one and play a demo which includes a tutorial and the first half of the Babysitter level on Easy.

I think that's about it.

And uhm, in case you for some reason have difficulty guessing it, the official website is at elitebeatagents.com.

Where can I post my scores and laugh at people doing worse than me?

Right here.

I just finished JJF on Normal, and the lack of difficulty surprises me. I've never been able to clear RSG on Normal, spinners keep screwing my shit up, but I just blew right past them here. For some reason I can't manage to perfect Material Girl on Normal because of those exact same spinners though.

    Seriously, fuck spinners.

Spinners are easy. Use a long stylus (pen-length). Keep your spins near the center; spinning the outer areas will take longer. If you know in advance where a spinner is going to be, you can also start spinning before it shows up, so you'll already have momentum for it.

I should probably try and find a longer stylus then. I'm just so incredibly horrible at them, and every time one pops up I get worried about scratching my touchscreen since I don't have any screen protectors, bah.

    EDIT: OP looks less old

So I've owned the game since the day it came out and I just found out today that you can start JJF right away by clicking on the thing in the upper right corner instead of playing it through the scenario before that...
I bet at least one person will benefit from this information and everyone else will just go DUUUUUUUH.

I haven't had any issue with scratching my screen.

Like I've said before, you either need to be pressing really hard or be using a screwdriver or something to damage the thing.

    I've been using a mechanical pencil :P

    Who here spins counter clockwise?

    *raises hand*

I always found spinners to be a lot easier in Ouendan when I went counter clockwise and the habit carried over to EBA.

    I go back and forth.

Last night I got an all-300 run on YMCA (Breezin'), but still fell short of the high score because I can't accumulate enough spinner bonus.

Spinners are always really hit and miss for me. I think I have certain wrist positions where I can do them perfectly with a million extra bonus points but I have yet to figure out where that is. Sometimes I manage to screw up spinners on Normal because I'm somehow not spinning right and my wrist just feels lethargic.

    JJF is killing me...

I'm basically replaying it and progressing through the song via memorization.

One of my biggest problems is the way I play right handed, I tend to miss hits on the deep right side because i didn't see them coming till after I missed it.

That and the spinner section in JJF. Not so much the spinners themselves but the really really really fast hits that I took me several dozen times to get the exact timeing down on. You can't miss just one, If I do I go down fast as I can't catch up in time and take 2-6 misses.

Edit: referring to JJF on Normal difficulty.

Most people who didn't play Ouendan get stuck on JJF on Normal for awhile. Three of my friends are stuck there, but are slowly getting further and further. Keep at it, you'll pass it. But yeah, generally if you miss one note you end up missing 2-6. Happens to me all the time.

It's the number 1 selling game - for a single week in a single store. It didn't clock in on Media Create's top 30, and I doubt it broke the top 50 either. I just thought it was hilarious that it was the top seller - even if only in a single store - so I shared that.

Clearly Spin is where it's at.

Actually, though I didn't like Chieftan at first, I've come to like him quite a bit recently. Not as much as Kai from Ouendan, but still. I definetly like him more than J.

I actually find that if I start to think about what I'm doing I'm likely to fuck up.

On another note, I beat YtI on Insane. Missed the S-Rank by a couple 300s again.

The second-to-last group of levels is killing me. I did tolerably well on Let's Dance but fucked up in the third section. Survivor and Anthem absolutely slaughter me, though.

Just beat ABC, and I must say it was the first level I just generally disliked in every aspect. Bad cover, bad song, meh story, and I just didn't like the way the beats worked with the song. Not bad that in the whole game (mind you I didn't unlock the last level) I really was only unhappy with one level.

Yeah, I didn't like ABC either. I only play it to try to make my score better (unlike others which I'll play for fun).
