Hey guys and gals. As some of you know, I was just in Austin for GDC. Here are the images that comprised my portfolio (in this order too). I got a lot of great feedback from some top quality artists and recruiters.

Some I've posted (some on this very page), some I haven't.

Hope to have much better work in the coming months! (Not that this work is 'bad' per se, just Im an improvement junkie!)

Lot of nice work, there. Some critiques I have would be that the welder lookin' dude with the yak has something funky going with the perspective, especially in regards to his arms. In the one with the welder mask, I feel like the coat pocket on our left should not be as visible as it is, because it makes it seem like it's on the front of his coat almost, whereas the one on the right seems to be more on the side of the coat. With the one with the coat, his shoulders and feet have a slight perspective on them, but his elbows have a much more angled line if you draw a line between the two.

Otherwise, I love your cubone. You also get some neat colors in your environments, although I think those could use some expansion in terms of the skies/top area of the composition in them (particularly the city one, the cloudless haze works better on the one with the cave, I think).

    Wow, thanks!

Now that you mention the perspective on that character, it feels like such a noob mistake! haha. It doesnt make any sense at all!

And yeah, need to learn more about clouds...

If those are portfolio images you'll probably want to fix the typos in the Pokemon ones, too. There are quite a few.

Pete Konig of Valve seemed to like my work, and told me to work on paying attention to different material, and painting them out differently than each other. He also gave me an animal anatomy crit on the pokemon (and basically an all around draw from reference/learn more). But over all I think he liked my work okay.

The hiring director from CCP (makers of EVE online) told me my space marine wasn't 'real enough'. Which I should have asked her to clarify because that could mean a lot of things. She also said one of my environments would work well for an MMO called pirates of the burning sea, which is pretty bad ass because Im sooo down with pirates. She also mentioned that she does not want to see 'illustrations' (like the goblins and the sith lord)

And some other hiring directors told the same thing about the illustrations, and then they told me they want to see more iteration, and variation. It seems they are more interested in the process, and not the final design per se.

Learned a lot of other junk too, but that was the main stuff stressed on my work.

If I had to guess, they meant it looks too "fantasy sci fi". It looks awesome, but not functional, ie. no ability to turn the head, kinda inflexible and boxy below the waist.

yeah. That's my guess too. - Too much coolness factor, and not enough functionality in the design.

I actually feel like I learned a fair amount from them. I have never really done all that many color studies in my day (and consider color to be one of my weaker skills) so this sort of simple study actually took my about an hour or two each.

(The latter was sort of a quick painting by seargent himself, so if you meant there is not enough polish, I didn't want to try and supersede the original.)

I think as I do more of these, I will be able to do longer studies. But as it is, I need to get a better grasp by just doing a bunch of color studies.

I also feel the second one shows a progression from the first. So I'll do a few more, see what I'm learning, and assess the situation as I go. (And by no means do I mean to say I won't do longer studies, but to form a foundation I'm going to fire a few quick ones off.)

It doesn't seem like you've researched mechanical stuff enough to make these believable. The way the joints are constructed, and just the overall detailwork doesn't seem to make much sense.

Good call ND. I was sort of designing as I went a long, and stopped too early/didn't really know enough to make them believable without reference.

I'll try and look some shit up and keep pushing the designs.

I kind of got a kick in the ass about a week ago, and realized I was not working nearly hard enough to reach my goals. So, I have a new goal. I intend to do four sketch pages, and a one hour speed paint a day. I didn't quite reach my goal this week, but I'll get it next week! promise!

Watch out on some of those muscular studies, they're getting to feel a little bit too Mr. Slim Goodbody-ish, like the lines delineating the musculature are just being drawn on top of a complete human shaped figure, rather than describing the actual forms of the muscles as they function within the body. I don't know if you're using posemaniacs ref for these or not, but it's really not that good for muscle reference for that reason- you don't end up getting a sense of the true form or function of the muscles with it, since the muscles are just a texture on a simple mesh.

Also, the ones that say "5" and "10" on them...are those numbers indicating the time spent on each sketch, or a description of each person's Hot or Not rating?

I really enjoy looking through this sketchbook, and I admire anyone who can sketch in ink without leaving a mess of lines. :)

Also, I <3 those crabs, it really feels like you nailed the lighting there.
