It's impossible for us to without a doubt prove the non-existence of God. We just have to take it on faith that he's imaginary..
I had a D60 for a bit and I liked it. I'm kind of pissed though because I think I paid around 800 - 900 for mine back when I bought it around a year ago, albeit I did add a telephoto lens to the package.
Where are you finding it at that price? Unless you're talking used (in which case that isn't a fantastic deal), you're probably looking at a scam site - there are many of them peddling overly cheap cameras and lenses.
Get yourself a Nikon 50mm 1.8d prime lens for $115 and you're all set.
The prime lens was the kit lens with all the Nikon and Canon's sold way back in the day. It is one of the greatest lens' you'll ever own, and you'll spend way more on a worse lens.
I know I'm ranting, but the "Nifty 50" can't take a bad picture. If it exists in three dimensions, the 50 will take an awesome shot of it.

Er, it's good but don't hype it too much. It's a bit long on a crop sensor and not as useful for landscapes or architecture photography as the kit lens. Indoors you'll often find yourself pressed against walls wishing you could get just a bit wider when attempting to shoot in close quarters. It's still a must-have, but you'll be frustrated if you get it alone.

What he says is true.
Still a GORGEOUS lens, though. Great for outside stuff where you can have a little bit more distance between you and the subject.
Even though I have a D60 I'm using the 50mm because it's just that good. And there's really nothing wrong with learning how to manually focus. It'll do you a world of good to learn that.

I totally agree. What I meant was that with the kit lens, the 50 is all you need to buy. I still stand by the fact that it can't take a bad picture. Even if it's not the picture you were hoping for, it'll still be pretty

I say go for it.
Don't bother with the D60 if you've got a D30 or a D40, though. It's not much of an upgrade at all.
