package of trouble

I had to send an important package for my girlfriend to her college. I sent it, and they asked if I wanted it C/O, I didn't say anything, and he put it C/O girlfriend's name.

I since learned CO is care of, and, well, this college is across the country. When it gets there, are they going to be able to accept it? It has a key inside that is very very expensive to replace. Talking $500 or so, as they have to re-key everything.

No idea what to do >_>;

    "Care of" means "deliver it to this person."

    It should be fine.

    Even if she does not live there? That is the main concern.

    You use "care of" like this:

    Garfield the Cat
    C/O Jon Arbuckle

    Garfield the Cat can't sign for his package full of lasagna, so it's delivered into the "care of" his owner, Jon.

    I'm assuming what happened here is they sent it to:

    Your Girlfriend
    C/O Her School

    That means it's being shipped to the school itself so that it can be accepted, then the school will take care of getting it to your lady.

    She is here with me, delivering to her school, C/O her.

    Afraid that once it gets there they wont be able to accept it, as she is here.

    I know it was a mistake on my part, but I had never heard the expression ever used before. D;

    While i'm certainly not an absolute authority, as far as I know the worst that would happen is it's considered undeliverable and they return it to you.....They're not just going to toss it in the trash.

    Which carrier did you send it through?

    At the very least, call the receiving at the college where they'll take it. Tell them what happened and what to expect. Then call USPS and see what you can do about it. They may not be able to do anything, but it's better than sitting there hoping it'll work.
