We got a Wii for Christmas and the balance board for my birthday. We've been having problems synching the wiimotes almost from the beginning and haven't been able to synch up the balance board wince opening it today.
Anybody run across this problem or heard about a solution?
How the Wii handles syncing, the world may never know. You are not alone, every single person on the planet who owns a Wii has at one point since its purchase become frustrated with losing a sync connection with a wiimote and trying to re-establish it.
Oh I know what connection it uses. It's just the Wii has a terrible interface for telling you the progress of syncing, in any form. Blinking lights, that's it. What do they mean? Why does it fail so often and take so many tries? Do you have to push the sync button on the Wii first, or the Wiimote? Same time? Do you hold it down? Yes, these may be in a manual somewhere, but there is no intuitive indication while attempting these things. And considering just how many tries it takes, you never know if you're doing something right. Not to mention controllers becoming un-synced at random times, makes it a frustrating process.
The 360, easy, rotating lights, you can tell both when the controller and system are looking for a sync connection, and you can tell right when they find each other.
PS3, while a hassle to have to physically plug in, it's pretty simple and straightforward.
My wii motes and board synched on the first try incredibly quickly and easily and it's really not that hard to figure out how to do it. It's literally pushing two buttons, that is all.

You press the sync button on the Wii first, then the Wii remote. That's in the manual.
I've only had sync problems with my frequently used Wii two times since I bought it in 2006 (at launch). I haven't had any sync issues in over a year.

Except when that doesn't work.
Or, when it works, and then a minute later it drops the connection for no reason.
What's annoying is when I want to switch the "main" Wiimote (player 1, basically) because the one that was previously Player 1 has batteries that are too low (for what I want to do and I don't want to switch the batteries right now). I go to the remote connection area in the home menu, connect the new Wiimote I want to use, and exit the home menu. I use this new Wiimote to start my game and as it is loading the game, it disconnects my Wiimote and it will not reconnect. It will only reconnect to the previous Wiimote, where I have to go to the home menu and repeat the process.
Why would it do that?
Also, why would it decide that it didn't want to connect the fourth Wiimote when it easily connected to three others right then?
Anyway, at least I now know which red button to press first if I have to resort to that. Do you hold them or just touch them each once?
I know how to do it, my point is it has poor indicators regarding status. I'm glad some of you have never had problems, I've seen nonstop syncing issues on 3 Wiis, including my own. I found placing the Wiimote literally right next to the system helped establish a connection.

The latter.
Good to know; thanks.
I used to never have any problems, for up to three Wiimotes. I've never used the Wiifit panel/whatever it is... and I don't think we have it anymore. I have, however, seen our Wiimotes refuse to connect when attempting to connect more than three at one time (in one session). It's just strange, since what once worked no longer does, so that's the frustration. Thanks for the help on the red-button synching though.
Ok, well just unplugging the consol for a while worked for me. Thanks for that (especially considering I forgot to pick up new batteries on the way home)! Much faster synching compared to when the wiimotes would connect before. And once the wiimotes were done, the balance board was a piece of cake.
Then Wii Fit kicked my ass. Where's the fitness thread?

This.
Can't start anything now that the wiimotes aren't synching.
Actually WiiMotes are bog-standard Bluetooth devices. Or at least standard enough that my computer can see and play with them.
