A merchant empire backed by its wealth goes to war with an Imperialist government backed by an evil lord who eventually uses his newly earned power, bestowed upon him by a cowardly and wimpering populace, to overthrow the government and use the army that just fought defending those people to control them.

I don't think he's as much of an asshole. He seems capable of going slightly crazy at times, and in those moments he can be a extremely callous, but otherwise his heart seems to be in the right place. Which pretty much sets him against his entire family who are pretty much in it for themselves 24/7.
But then again I may just be taken in by his winning smile /swoon
