So I gave the beta a shot tonight and played a few games against the computer and against a couple of computers with a friend, but I'm absolutely awful at the game. Captain K suggested that playing space marines right off the bat was probably a bad idea, but I had a hard time getting into the orcs. Any tips?

I'm so terrible I've lost 2 out of 2 games so far.

I just have no idea how to play the tyranid.

How the hell do I get an army?

240 cost, are you kidding? I can never afford anything. It always seems I'm outnumbered wherever I go, so it's not like I even have the ability to capture more than two req points early on

Whats the usual Space Marine counter for armor? Tac marines with rocket launchers take a long time to bring down a walker. Dreadnoughts knock them out fast, but they also go down fast to other walkers and cost more. Predators are nice, but T3 and expensive.

I seem to go downhill once the other team starts fielding their walker equivalents.

yeah... i thought 240 was expensive too until I played spacies... 500 a tac squad.

My plan with nids is to use the hive tyrant a lot. He's good and with a little support can do a lot of damage.

I also like carnifexes and lictors. Maybe one squad of warriors and everything else as termigaunts and hormigaunts. Of course I just started playing this today.

Hive Tyrants, Warriors, and Zoanthropes(And Ravener Alphas with the upgrade for it) have an aura called Synapse that does awesome shit for your lesser tyranids(Ripper Swarms and 'Gaunts). Rippers are there as cannon fodder mainly, but also are immune to Suppression when under the effect of Synapse. But they all act smarter and do more damage when near a Synapse unit.

In Tier 2, warriors can get an upgrade for Ranged or Melee synapses, which lets Termagaunts knock people down with shots, or Hortigaunts leap on ork faces. Both are totally awesome

Space Marines don't really have a definitive AV unit, I would combine Dreadnought + Tac Marines w/ Missile Launcher. Which itself should take only 3-4 shots to down other walkers. FC's powerfist downright rapes vehicles also.

As for Tyranids, try getting Warriors out as soon as you can. Make sure you tell them to actually melee stuff if you give them Strangler or Cannons, by themselves they'll just sit and fire away. But what do I know, I'm like 1:2 with Nids.

Honestly, play a game or two per commander you want to use against the PC, just to learn abilities, and then go play ranked. You'll get destroyed, at first, but skill improvement is practically geometric. (Not quite exponential, heh) Actually you'll be okay, since there's a wave of new players.

Oh yeah, and 240 is a lot, if you're losing those squads. Quite literally, you might be winning the battle, but you'll lose the war. Retreat (X) button is your friend.

Force Commander with Power Fist can solo any team's walker, even a Dreadnought. Use the "Steel Over Flesh" ability (or whatever it's called) to disable/damage the enemy walker and then just right click it.

ASM melta bombs aren't 100% accurate like sticky bombs in CoH, but if they score a direct hit they do stick to the enemy vehicle even if it tries to run. You can count on 40-60% damage to any walker unit with this.

Also, as you said, use your own walkers and Tac marine rocket launchers.

Yeah the intro video is only unskippable the first time you boot the game up, after you've quit the game once it becomes skippable.

Aside from the previously mentioned methods of anti-armor for space marines, terminators (at least of the non-assault variety, not sure if the assault variety have them/use them) also carry power fists which can be used to melee armored vehicles effectively. You just need to force them to use their melee ability using the "z" key and then left clicking on the target.
