RFC: Something for the family of Whippy

OK,

So far I have a PO box address for Whippy, and nothing more. I may yet be able to get a residential address or a funeral home address to send gifts or condolences to, but I don't want to put off discussions on what we might do with that info any longer.

My idea was that I would go out and buy a card, and anybody from the community and extended community ( CoT and TTBers are invited ) could "sign" the card. This is meant as a show of our sympathy to the Rasco family, not something we will send just to Whippy, so I think we should keep it to just signatures of our actual names, and if we include screen-names then it better be in a very understated way.

How we will organize it, I thought, is for people to either scan or take a digital picture of their signature on a white piece of paper, and then I will layout those images to print either directly on the card, or on an insert into the card. If you don't have access to a scanner or camera, then we can either just type in your name, or you might try "signing" into MS-Paint.

The other thing we would probably like to do if we can get an address to send to, is to send a bouquet to the funeral home, or a gift basket to the family's home. I have mixed feelings about the gift basket idea, but I've been told it is an acceptable gesture and my mother, in fact, told me once how grateful she was for having a gift basket of foods at the house after my niece died. In a state of grief like this, it can be a chore just to remember to eat, let alone do grocrery shopping or meal preparation. So having some simple food around the house to munch on can be a good thing.

A challenge with the gift idea is collecting money for it. I have a paypal account, but it is not a "premium account", so it cannot accept credit-card payments.

So, if you are serious in participating in this community gesture, then post your feedback in this thread, and then when we've settled on the Who, What, and How I will send around another thread to actually go through with it.

My only reservation would be that Whippy's family may find it a bit weird being introduced to Whippy's online life via the medium of a condolencies card. Some people are a bit funny about strangers and the internet.

How old is whippy anyway.. if he is over 18 I really can't see his parents complaining too much.. if he is 13 then I can see a major problem.

Well, no matter what, I feel justified sending my own card on behalf of the moderators and me. Because we are, in effect, co-workers and I am his supervisor. It is perfectly normal to receive sympathy gestures from a place-of-work.

But I think it is also acceptable for me to open it up to the rest of the community provided that I keep his private info private, and that I screen "participants" ( is there a better word? ) to make sure we do it in a professional manner with no asshattery.

I would definitely say stick with our real signatures, rather than screen names, as many of ours (mine, for instance) aren't really appropriate for a sympathy card that his family will see. I guess you could keep a list of who signed or something, if he wants to know who they are later.

This is the best forum I have ever been to, this is a very close community. I think the same goes for Penny-Arcade with the gifts for the childrens hospitol.

I'll get my signature in somehow, I dont have a camera or scanner though. I guess I can try MSpaint. I also have a couple dollars to spare if you can get a Paypal account up or something.

    Good luck.

Fair do's Doc. Don't get me, wrong I think its a really nice gesture. Just that it could be embarassing if it were misinterpreted. I take it that if you have Whippy's PO Box address that he's ok with receiving stuff from you anyway.

I tried doing signing my name in Paint, but it didn't exactly turn out, so I'll try scanning it at home. I can't pitch in in any way money-wise, unfortunately, I'm currently under the influence of poverty.

Do Whippy's parents know he even goes to these forums? Mine wouldn't.

Sending cash is kind of impersonal, no? Does anyone here know him really well? We could put all the donations together to get him something really cool, but it's a matter of knowing what would be cool to him.

Edit: Oh, nevermind. This is a for the family, not a for Whippy kind of thing.

Maybe this is too tacky so I'll propose this meekly...

Is there anyway you could get Gabe and Tycho to do something little/special for him, Ramius? He has been a rather big deal, at least forum-wise, for years now.

    CHATLOG!

[December 02, 10:38:06] Ramius: so the forum community is going to do something. like flowers or a card or something.
[December 02, 10:38:27] Tycho: do guys want flowers? that seems questionable.
[December 02, 10:38:34] Ramius: not sure yet how it will come together, but I didn't know if you and mike would want to put your name on the card as well.
    [December 02, 10:38:40] Tycho: Absolutely.
[December 02, 10:38:46] Tycho: Where are they collecting money?
[December 02, 10:38:48] Ramius: we would send flowers to the funeral home, probably.
[December 02, 10:39:12] Ramius: no money is being collected yet, because we haven't gotten any concrete information on the funeral home yet.
[December 02, 10:39:52] Ramius: But I'm working on it. probably in the next day or so I will know for sure.
[December 02, 10:40:10] Tycho: keep me up to date.
[December 02, 10:40:15] Ramius: sure will.

I'm totally open to hearing opinions on that, but I'm still leaning toward only signatures of our real names.

Stuff like John "Ramius" Doe just seems more appropriate for a more lighthearted situation.

I'd be more than happy to produce a printout that shows people's handle printed next to their signature, and deliver that to whippy at a later date.
