freelance legal issues

I have no idea how to begin to look something like this up, thought I'd see if anyone had heard of such a thing or maybe could point me towards the part of the internets that might help.

I do pretty steady freelance work for a company in New Jersey. I do not live in New Jersey. My friend who initially hooked me up with this gig said that they were looking for out-of-state freelancers at that time because someone in the company discovered a law that said if a company in NJ employs someone for X hours, they're required to give them office space and/or benefits and/or whatever. So they ditched their NJ freelancers and found new ones.

This seems really stupid to me, as the definition of freelancer seems to say you're doing the work NOT as an employee and thus there's no obligation to provide anything except payment for the work done. It was irrelevant to me, though, since I didn't live there anyway.

Now that I'm getting laid off, though, I might need to move back to NJ to mooch off my parents for awhile. I want to keep my freelance gig. I want to find out if there is such a law or if they're retarded. And if they would refuse to hire me if I live in NJ, could I just have my checks sent to an out-of-state address? Would Massachusetts come after me for state taxes if I get a paycheck sent there but actually live in NJ?
