You gain DP at level 10+... you get a little more and a little more every time you kill something for EXP. At 2000 DP you can use your DP skill, which all classes get in a small beginning quest. Example: Cleric regain 50% of their HP and Mana. Sorcerer's essentially kill their target (1000+ damage), etc. It's just a "big attack". DP goes away when you log out.
so... different games have different button layouts?
AAAnyway. Yeah i want to get into the abyss and do the all flying all the time stuff, my worry is that ranged classes will be ridiculously hard to pin down in pvp since they will be able to put distance between you and them in 3 dimensions.
If I was reading the aionsource forums correctly it seems that even if you use an instant ability, your character has to stop and animate it. I'm not in the preview so I don't really know the details, but it was a really big whine fest over there. I'm also guessing this might make ranged classes a bit easier to catch. *shrug*
Speaking of classes, something I'm terrible at choosing - I can't wait to be staring at the character selection screen going 'ohhhh shiney' and not having a clue on what archetype to go with. :?

Exactly, hence my "zomg stole from every other game" remarks :P
There's an area in the zone outside of Veter... Verte... that one place... that resembles "Ghelsba Outpost" exactly from FFXI. The mobs all look and act the same, and it keeps the same feel.
Even the targetting circles around mobs are straight out of Everquest. Yeah, targetting circles are nothing new, but they're exactly the same, especially in the way they are colored based on the 'con' of the enemy.
Again, not bad, just blaitant :P

This looks and sounds awesome.
But I don't know if it's really awesome enough to pull me away from FFXI.
Anyone build their DP up to 4000? Makes you look like you got into a fight with a Shadow Priest and an Affliction Warlock.
I took me a while to figure out why I was glowing. I got to about 3800 and died though, and it all went away. =(
It seems neat, but does it become more practical at some point down the line? It took like a level's worth of killing to build up enough to use the special once.... Unless I'm totally missing something, which is entirely possible.
Well, that makes sense then sorta. I was playing a Cleric... While a 50% health/mana restore was really nice, it's not really that great when it takes like an hour of playtime to build up.
But I don't know if it's really awesome enough to pull me away from FFXI.
um, hrm. I'm not sure how to respond to this statement as i found FFXI deplorable, and i stuck with it long enough to have a 65 DRK and 55 WHM a 40-something RDM and a handful of others. If you have it in you to enjoy FFXI you will adore this game.

All I know is that the DP special I had as a Gladiator is almost useless. It does MAYBE 50% more damage than a regular attack. Sure, it looks cool, but given how long it takes to build up enough DP to use it even once it's basically useless. Either they need to drastically increase the damage to bring it in line with the other classes or they need to drastically decrease the cost. If it was only 200DP to activate then I'd be ok with it since I could use it once every 2-3 fights for a slight damage bonus, or save my DP for a boss fight and be able to use it a couple of times.
Ya i didn't see a lot of usefulness in any of the dp abilities except for the spirit master's. Since it took roughly30-45 minutes to build up enough dp to use it and it lasted 10 minutes and made my pet a god i got a 10 minute window in there to get lots more xp due to never having to stop. But i felt like the one off abilities tied to dp were kinda useless.

Depends on what you enjoy about FFXI. If you really like FFXI, I would say stick with it until FFXIV. The PvE content of Aion doesn't have a lot of options and is nothing new, but it can be fun. I have a feeling Aion's end game content will focus heavily on PvP in the future which is nothing like FFXI at all.
In short, if you're into the abundance of PvE options of FFXI and don't really care about/dislike PvP, then stay away from Aion. If you like PvE, but also desire a good balance of PvP then give Aion a go. Personally, I'm playing Aion until FFXIV comes out. Aion is a cookie cutter MMO that does many things well, whereas I feel FFXIV has more of a chance to provide a unique experience.

That's cool, sounds kinda like "TP" in FFXI.
TP only goes to 300 and in most cases if you use it you use all of it in one go. Don't think this works quite like that.

...and when you are done with that; take a folding
chair to Creation and then suplex the Void.
I was sorta wondering what DP did... I noticed it started building up at level 10, but I searched around and didn't see that I had an ability that used it.... possibly I didn't know what I was looking for, but soon enough my character was all glowin' and shit. I never got to try using it because that was the end of the beta. :P
But if DP goes away when you logoff, I guess that's just one more reason to not logoff and instead just setup your private store whenever you walk away from the computer to sleep, or whatever.
No, flying is extremely unintuitive. Want to fly up? Don't hit the spacebar that makes your character move up in all other situations, you need to hit R. If you want to fly down you can just angle yourself down, which is much slower than hitting F.
I wouldn't have known this if I didn't read the help section in game to figure it all out. I also learned that gliding rarely works.
"in all other situations" see WoW. I had a slightly hard time adjusting to space bar not making me go up for like 15 minutes, then i realized i was playing a different game and adjusted accordingly. I found myself spending most of my time in the air during combat etc, my wife was playing a ground pounding templar and i was playing a cleric and since you get bonuses to healing mp boost etc. when you're in the air i just started thinking of myself as air support for my wife. I'm excited to see how aerial combat evolves in the later game, what additional bonuses the different classes gain from being in flight vs. being on the ground.
How could you be healing people from in the air the entire time? My Chanter only gets 1min of flight time before it has to regen.
DP can also be used to create craft ingredients by also expending the floating ore-dust. There are vendors in the PVP areas where you can buy different "recipes" to spend DP on. I highly recommend spending DP on that instead of your DP skills, because ingredients = $$.
Heh, it's called Aether. It's in flying areas, like the first main town
You know, I specifically kept my eyes open for it, and didn't recognize anything. Does it say something when you mouseover it? I kept trying to find it, but didn't.
I only got a couple of them out of curiosity. I saw no point in crafting and selling things during a closed beta (Why were so many people selling items up to the last day? They lose it all during next closed beta, right?) They were just up in the air in random areas... much like a mining or herbalism node.
Man, Sept 20th Headstart is going to be nuts... logging in ASAP to reserve all the names you want... :P

you don't spend all the time in the air. But whenever i had over half a bar of flight time and we got into combat i would deploy my wings move up a little bit and start casting. Using the flight time as a consumable resource that regens itself over time to get the associated buffs. People seem to be writing the flight off as a gimmick when it actually seems to me to add a whole new layer of strategy to combat.

Unless somewhere they've said otherwise, the characters will last throughout the beta events. I played the same fighter I made in June in this event.
I played this last weekend (after finally getting Windows 7 to work, I think they fixed it in an update.) And now I cant stop thinking about this game.
It was that good. All the feeling I had when I first started playing WoW has come flooding back... it's crazy. I log on to WoW and I just sit there and think about Aion. I have no desire to raid for loot becuase I'd rather be playing a different game all together. And any progess in WoW is going to mean nothing come Aion.
I CANNOT wait until September. Even thinking of changing my vacation dates from August so I can devote more time.
So I really like this game. I have a lot of little minor gripes but the combat is so fulfilling and everything is so amazingly gorgeous and polished, and the patch notes are pretty rad. I don't think it's better than WoW on the whole, but as someone who has little reason to log onto WoW on non-raid nights I am really looking forward to this games release.

Sigh....
Any word on a PA legion?
Limed because I've been feeling the same way. I'm also very sad that the next beta event isn't until next week.
I'd love to get in on a PA Legion day 1. I will certainly be owning this game and playing the crap out of it.

Considering you're all saying the naming scheme is f'in busted ass crazy, what's the max character limit? Assuming it's long enough, you could basically give yourself a first and 'last' name right off the bat, right?
I've been thinking of restarting my WOW addiction but I have high-level toons and no guild in a game dedicated to raiding. I've just started hearing about Aion for the first time and am much more interested in trying it. Everything looks sick. Read the OP, still had two questions. Is there going to be a demo or free trial, or is that still unannounced? Also, how's the sharding going to work with the servers? Will the September NA release be a brand new server, or will it put people in with all the Korean players that have been active for awhile?
That's exactly how I feel. I've got only high-level characters in Warcraft... and it's unappealing because I have no one to play with and no interest in raiding (or taking on a full-time job as a raider)
I'd love to rid myself of the account and start over... but yeah...

I'm never going back to the fucking barrens. Or Westfall. Ever. And while I'd love to raid I can honestly say I wouldn't make it a month before something in real life would cause me to bail on a raid, and I hate making commitments to people and sketching out. Plus this game looks really neat.

From what I've read/heard:
No, there will not be a free trial or anything. This of course could change in the future. However, go to your local EB/Gamestop, and put $5 on the game. They hand you beta codes, which gets you into every beta event, as well as free goodies when the game starts, which is 5 days earlier for all preorder people. Completely worth the $5, even if you don't buy it retail. Don't like it? Cancel your preorder and use that $5 on something else.
NA will be on their own servers. No dealing with high-level Koreans straight out the gate.
Cool thanks. I'm off class in August and was hoping to use this to pass some time, but I guess beta's close enough. My friend took one look at this and said it looks like Lineage II (which I never played)....accurate?

It's the same company, and the art style is undeniably very similar. However the main goal with this game has been to try to get a big chunk of the Western market. That means no grinding, leveling not that much slower than WoW, and a small death penalty (still stiffer than WoW though). Lineage 1 and 2 by contrast had insane amounts of grinding, horribly slow leveling, and (I think) a serious death penalty with item loss.
I do think they are going for an endgame kind of like Lineage with some PVE and lots of PVP keep raids.
I was under the impression that the pre-order was nonrefundable... Also, in order to get it from NCSoft, you have to prepurchase, not just preorder. At least, that's my understanding. I didn't do either, so I can't be 100% certain. Unexplained free beta key FTW!
