I have a couple questions about the expansions (content packs, whatever you call them).
Do they lean heavily to favoring one kind of character build? I'm going back and replaying Fallout 3 in preparation for playing all three at once. I'm either going energy/small weapons sneak character or energy/big weapons behemoth. Is going big weapons worth it for the Pitt and Broken Steel etc?
I wonder how long it will take the guys over at No Mutants Allowed to spin this into the most horrifying event in the history of mankind, and begin violently attacking themselves in a fit of mind-bending insanity.
I suspect, without looking, that they are now hearlding this as the greatest thing to happen to Fallout since it's creation, since it is being made by former Black Isle... so after the first set of screenshots show up :P
Never underestimate the ability of the NMA crowd to turn something potentially cool and great into the anguishing defeat of the true beloved spirit of Fallout!
I am one of those people that didn't like New Reno's vibe in Fallout 2, so setting wise, I hope Vegas isn't like one giant New Reno. Though it could just be that Fallout 2 was silly as shit.
But still, pretty damn exciting.
Las Vegas must be pumping some money to the right people in the video game industry, we got This is Vegas, Rainbow Six Vegas, Dead Rising 2, and now Fallout (4?) Vegas.
How can they make Fallout Las Vegas and not be a sequal?
I mean.. what..how..but..
Then..with the..and you know..the black isle..and things..
my brain..its twisting..the pain...oh..pretty colllooorrrrssssssrraaaaiiiinnbbboooowwwwww~
Perhaps it's not a sequel in the sense that it doesn't take the events of Fallout 3 into account? Events happening elsewhere at the same time as the main quest in FO3 maybe.

Since it's not going to be 2d isometric, they'll hate it.
They should buy a newer PC than a Gateway 2000 and figure out that isometric sucks.

So is it fair to say Obsidian is led by "core" or "indispensible" members of Black Isle, or is the connection a little more tenuous than Kotaku is leading me to believe? I don't want to get too pumped.

Feargus Urquhart, Chris Parker, Darren Monahan, Chris Avellone and Chris Jones were some of the head people for Fallout 1 and 2, Baldur's gate series, and Planescape torment. They all currently work at Obsidian. I have very very high hopes for this.
I wonder how many dogs are gonna go deaf from the harmonization of all the fanboy glee squeals.
it'll be balanced out by all the fanboy shreaks
Have you been to NMA? It's scary. They're...they're cautiously optimistic. I've never seen anything like it before.
that'll be killed with each detail that's revealed
remember, these are the same people that bitched endlessly about everything revealed about Van Buren as it was revealed, which led J.E. Sawyer to deliver that beautiful paragraph or two of poetry that sums up the awfulness of Fallout fans

I'm not sure I like the idea that this New Vegas is slated for release only next year. Getting a year (or less) to work on a major title reeks of KOTOR II to me.

Which someone must find, and show us right now.
found it:
The point, in case zealots want to ever accept it, is that your tastes are not the only tastes in the whole world. Really, I know this may be hard to believe, but if you like playing a turn-based game set in three counties of Utah in 2242, and you like miniguns but you don't like lasers, and you like the ratio of dialogue to combat to be about 4:1, and you like cars that look more like Buicks than Pontiacs, and you think 50s-style monsters are okay, but 50s-style aliens aren't, and you think that Max's jacket from Mad Max is okay but the football pad armor isn't, and you don't like when italics are used in dialogue but you do like it when boldface is used, and you want it to be longer than 100 hours but not longer than 120 hours, and like games to be non-linear but only to a point, and want big cities, but only two because four is too much BUT HEY NOT THAT ONE, and you like the desert but don't mind a little grass BUT HEY NOT THAT MUCH BECAUSE IT'S NOT FALLOUT... I am terribly, terribly sorry, because we are not going to make a game just for you.
We're not trying to make a game for everyone. Really, we aren't. But we're not making a game just for you and ten other angry guys with tastes that are narrower than a hallway in a camp of pygmy dwarves.
Man, that really is such an awesome quote. And you can apply it to just about any examples of overzealous fanboy expectations.
But anyhow, getting back on topic. I could see a year and a half being feasible if they're basically using the existing gaming engine and perhaps just adding some new art and sound (ie. music, dialogue, maybe a few new sfx) assets into the mix. After all, Bethesda's been creating its DLC within 1-2 month spans.
As for the idea of Obsidian releasing something similar to Van Buren, I find that highly unlikely. I think most if not all the guys at Obsidian had already left Black Isle when Van Buren was in development hadn't they?

You will burn in hell for that remark.D:
No I won't.
I grew up with a Tandy and a Mac SE. Upgraded every few years.
Isometric sucked just like grid based FPS dungeon crawls sucked. They were only good because it was the best at the time and while Fallout 1 and 2 are still fun games, and isometric can be used (as well as FPS dungeon crawl) and still be fun, it's not something I look back on fondly.
In 40 years when we're all playing Half Life 3: Episode One on our mind melding VR headsets no one's gonna say, "Man, this sucks. I totally think they should have been retro and had us sit in front of a screen man. It's just not legit."

Black Isle did Fallout 1 and 2. The main guys behind Fallout 1 bailed right at the beginning of Fallout 2. The guys at Obsidian were leftovers from Black Isle who mainly worked out Fallout 2.
I think one of the "main" programmers of Fallout 1 is making MMOs for company that did Tabula Rasa while another was supposedly working on the Fallout MMO.

Tycho's post on the front page just about sums it up. Chris "mutha fuckin" Avellone is working on a new Fallout game. I don't think you can get it too pumped up. Shit is going to be hot.

JE Sawyer was the lead developer on Van Buren, I believe. He's at Obsidian now, and with the Aliens RPG either canceled or on hold, he might be on this new Fallout game. I imagine there are more from the Van Buren team that went to Obsidian as well.
edit: And I should say, the original developers of the first two games are all over the place right now. Some are at Obsidian, some at InXile, and even some at Blizzard. Some are also on that doomed FO online RPG. I'm guessing others are at unknown places and some are out of the biz.
So it's not really accurate to say Obsidian is the Black Isle team (or the previous Interplay team that made Fallout). They're one piece of it.
Should I make a new thread about the new Fallout game announcement, or should we keep the discussion here?
Because MY PANTS ASPLODE!
I'd say petition freakish light to change the thread title and keep the discussion here, at least until something more than substantial is revealed. So, the thread isn't just "This is gonna be soooo awesome guys!" posts.

I am really keen to see a new Fallout game from Chris and company. Hopefully they will go back to basics more with it and not so much on the FPS combat.

I've actually never played the first two Fallouts, but I have played other the turn-based games in that vein. I did not like them.
So I really hope they do keep the FPS style mechanics, with VATS and all that. But I imagine, for people who loved the first two games, this is not the popular opinion.

I would imagine that if Obsidian is using the current FO engine, they'll stick with the whole FPS/VATS thing. Why wouldn't they?

It won't be related to the story told in FO3 about that particular dude (The Wanderer?).
It will be another story about some other people.
If they incorporate any of the 50s rock sensibilities of that movie this game will be awesome.
