They had to add this many numbers because a Wii Code is given to every single person who ever takes their Wii online, unlike the DS which is on a game-by-game basis.
Unless they plan on selling literally a billion of them, something along the lines of a telephone number should've sufficed. Plus, it's easier to remember a seven digit set of numbers than a sixteen digit set.
It's not so much a complaint, but shock and bewilderment.
I know they don't plan on selling a billion of them, but I bet they plan on selling more than 10 millions.
They would look pretty stupid if they used only seven digits and unique numbers dissappeared after 9999999 units.
Oh god, it's using the same online system as the DS?
Why?
No, it isn't. The DS had different friend codes for every game. The Wii has one for each console. Also, there's no reason to believe that the matchmaking will be as restricted.
Is it just me or does it take forever to do a system update? I had to do one when I first connected to the internet and then I selected my country and now it's in the process of another long update. Hopefully I only have to do this once.
Other than the long wait though, connecting to the internet seems like the easiest thing ever.

I know I should really ask this in the Wii thread, but since you mentioned it...
What countries can you select? A bunch of us thinking about importing are wondering how all the online services might try to restrict us.

There seemed to be a lot of countries. It wasn't just "US, Canada, Yurop" sort of thing. I had to scroll down a little to find "Canada" on an alphabetical list. Does that help?
But I really have no idea about importing vs restrictions.

Hmm, that gives me some hope.
Thanks, Taya. We'll see what happens after some people have actually imported the console.

So, one of the things I noticed is that the Home button, in a game, just gives you an option to return to the menu, without saving your game. This was from the Wii kiosk.
At the very least, messages should come through that menu, no?
Well, I got up at 6:00AM to help my friend get one. If my friend had just buttoned up and settled in one of the 3-hour lines, he would have gotten one. Instead, we drove around all morning with my preordered Wii in the trunk until noon when I start my 12hr shift (I came in 30mins late). Basically, each place we saw that had no lines seemed like a "we'll return when they are about to open" kind of place where we'd go on looking elsewhere.
So I don't get to touch my Wii today while he gets to go through all my 1st time setup stuff. I'd say "fine, I'll take yours when you get one" except that I wouldn't have had one since launch if I do that.
I was just replying to a message from jarbonza and noticed that if you hit the top right button on the on-screen keyboard, Wii will attempt to auto-complete words for you. Quite nice.

From now on, and until the wiki page goes up, could you please do me a huge favor and type out your name+code? Like this:

It would help tons, thanks. I'm leaving soon to get my Wii, so wish me luck.
How does the Wii codes thing work, compared to the DS friend codes?
Well? Poor? Instant?
I have an unhealthy fascination with Miis, strangely.
Do we know if there's a limit on how many friend codes you can enter on this thing?
Edit: Looks like a hundred. :?
I've added everybody's code in the OP. I'll add everyone from the rest of the thread when I get back from a meeting at work.

Has anybody else tried sending emails to your Wii from a computer yet? It works pretty well (a little slow though). You can even attach pictures.
EDIT: I just added everybody that's posted so far.

I guess I'll add this to my signature and start adding all of you guys.
Oh god, what will happen when DaC and the Codex gets ahold of one?
Remember that comic about the 360 digital camera, showing Tycho's inbox?
Imagine that, but with [Insert "shock" site here} plastered all over a goddamn mech.
Imagine the horror.
