[SUCCESSION GAME ON] Civilization IV: Yes, you too can rule Pisswater

edited July 2009 in Games and Technology
I did a search for Civ 4 threads and didn't find anything, so if I just missed it then feel free to close the thread.

civilization_4_cover.jpg

Ahhh, Civilization IV, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways...
  • No more "pollution"! All cities work on a much more intuitive "health" system!
  • Religion now included! Make your state religion a center of your civilization's culture!
  • No more micromanaging your technology slider so you don't accidentally do a little more research than is required for the current tech; research now overflows into your next tech!
  • Great People! They vary in their effects, but are all extremely useful!
  • Stop paying constantly for your improvements! Focus on building great cities instead of a bunch of crummy ones!
  • And much, much more!

But what's that? That's just not good enough for you? You need more, you say?

Behold...

boxart_civ_4_warlords_qjpreviewth.jpg

Warlords! The very first expansion pack adds a whole lot of options to your early conquest-minded strategies.
  • A brand new Great Person: Great Generals! They can join your city as a Military Instructor, create a Military Academy, or simply join a stack of units to provide massive bonuses!
  • Vassal State Diplomacy! No longer will you scour the globe for that one last city that your opponent built in Antarctica! Make them a Vassal State and their subjugation is complete!
  • New leaders, buildings, units, leader traits, and so on!
  • Buy yours today and we'll throw in this handy-dandy booklight absolutely free!

So you just read all that stuff about Warlords and are still wondering to yourself, "Self, that's great and all, but what about the people who aren't interested in purely obliterating the opponent? Isn't there an expansion for that, and when is it coming out?"

civ4bts.jpg

Well now, don't you feel foolish? This expansion has been out for over a year and a half now!

When you stick your grubby, unwashed hands past the cereal in the box and reach down to the very bottom, you'll find:
  • Corporations! Exchange resources for corporate benefits!
  • Espionage is now available much earlier in the game! Poison your opponent's water supply, discover what they are researching and put a halt to it, and cause rebellions!
  • Apostolic Palace! Force your brothers and sisters of the faith to see things your way!
  • New leaders, units, buildings blah blah blahty blue blah -- all focused on the late game!
  • And yes, so much more!

We're starting a single-player game and passing the save game around to whoever wants it.

If you're interested in reading how things are going, the blog is located here.

Things are starting to heat up in the townships of Pisswater and Catfood!

Incidentally, I'm not very awesome at this game, but I do love to play it. Maybe you all can inspire me to greatness past the third easiest difficulty.

I only play on the third easy difficulty also. I just get annoyed that the computer cheats after that. But this game is awesome and everyone should own it, no exception.

Not actually a bad idea for a mod, that. Constant stream of zombies, must fight your way through infected cities and set up outposts, gradually reaching their source? Hells yes.

All that, and no comments about the fact that city improvements no longer cost gold to maintain, allowing you to actually focus on making a few cities awesome instead of spreading small ones everywhere?

Beyond the Sword is very dangerous for me. Once I start a game I've officially doomed myself to do absolutely no work that day. Once I start a game of Civ IV I cannot stop.

Seriously though, this is the only game that has done the "Vassal State" thing correctly. When I've taken a third of an NPC's empire with my tanks and he is defending with knights, he actually knows when to give up. In other games they would be defiant while you obliterated their military, burned their homelands and exterminated their population except for one lone frontier city, and then they would finally surrender. At least in this game he can become a proxy government and avoid the destruction.

Then you've gotten lucky, are playing on a low difficulty, or have never been in a really protracted fight with anybody. It's based on relationship as well as power. The more they hate you, the less likely they are to concede to you. In fact, more often than not, they'll vasillate (which is different) to someone they like more, forcing you into a war with someone else.

I realized a long time ago that if I delete it I will just end up reinstalling it a week later.

    Ah Civilization. This fucking game.

I recently downloaded a total conversion mod known as Fall From Heaven 2, and I'm loving it. Decided to multiplayer it with a friend, only to find "well we've only got time for about an hour lets try it out" turned quickly into 5 hours of gameplay and it's midnight holy shit fuck you Civilization argh.

Seriously, this game is the definition of "onemoreturnitis".

As for the NSF56K thing, I figured better safe than sorry. Lynch me if you must.

I'm currently playing a continents map with the English. I just got my Redcoats. Fuck yes.

this always makes me so mad. I'll spend a few hours wiping a civ off the map to give me an edge against my rival that i'm not ready to be at war with and then the douchebags go ahead and become vassals of the rival, ruining my plans. :x

I had a good game of Civ4 going with a friend the other day. We had removed the other three civs that started on the same continent as us (there were four continents more or less at the corners of a square), and we had just started a war with Napoleon to the southwest because he looked at us wrong or something, I don't know. But out of nowhere, an Egyptian city pops up to the north of buddy's border, in a tiny corner of our continent. Buddy takes great offense to this and burns it to the ground. But apparently, Ramesses was BFFs with fucking everybody because now we're at war with everyone on the southeast continent and one or two people elsewhere.

I love this game so much.

Argh. I'd love to get my Civ on. I havnt been able to find my discs for a while though. Frustrating since I actually havnt played that much of 4 and expansions.
I can find the complete pack for around £12, which is substantially cheaper than a steam purchase.
Any thoughts on having some games organised through this thread on a regular basis?

The best fun I've had with multiplayer is the setup where you start a single player game, play a pre-determined amount of turns, and then pass the save game file for someone else, while posting what all happened during your reign in the forum.

If you get a dedicated group of people together who won't just disappear, it can be hella fun.

I'd rather have us all play one big game, together... as different Civ's. Preferably we can voice chat via ventrilo, so that I can speak on behalf of my nation when I tell you "Your scouts have wandered dangerously close to my territory. Move them, or prepare to die."

Damnit, you guys are going to make me reinstall this aren't you. Awesome game, even if I sucked at it. But I've been buying too many games lately and neglecting them enough already, Civ IV would just make me abandon them completely.

I still remember the only game I actually played online with PA involved 7 of us starting on one continent together, and one person off on their own continent expanding like a mad man.
