Mario & Luigi RPG 3: tag-teamin' with Bowser's internal organs against Fawful!

edited June 2009 in Games and Technology
So Alphadream's Mario & Luigi series has always been a little odd. The first game had the Bros. use themselves as weapons against beans. The second had them team up with baby versions of themselves against aliens.

So what are they doing for the third? Er.

marioluigi3_inline_1232066697.jpg

Well, that wasn't helpful. Maybe you should watch this video instead.

http://ds.ign.com/dor/objects/14286429/mario-luigi-rpg-3/videos/marioandluigirpg3_commercial3.html

We don't know the plot yet, but the whole thing gets kicked off when Bowser eats the Bros. 'bout damn time, eh? But that's not the end of it. Mario and Luigi will do their adventuring inside Bowser. Meanwhile, Bowser wanders the Mushroom Kingdom, kicking ass. Yet somehow they team up.

How? Well, Mario and Luigi can manipulate Bowser's internal organs to make him do things like hoist objects and belch flame. Meanwhile, Bowser can eat things to send to the Bros... in the video, one example has Bowser chugging water to allow Mario and Luigi to swim around obstacles.

Also, people get really fat for some reason. And Fawful!

Artwork_of_most_characters.jpg

He seems to be making sure the denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom have fury.

BattleML3.Jpg

The game comes out Feb. 12 in Japan, though a U.S. release hasn't been set yet.

While we wait, here's some screenshots.

Awesome. The reason this series is so great is just because of the wierd and goofy humor.

I haven't ever play partners in time, so I need to search it up before this one is released.

    Thhhhpt. PIT is damn good.

Personally I prefer Superstar Saga because the tag attacks are more fun and there's plenty of Fawful and Cackletta goodness, but I still had a great time with PIT.

Okay. Well, I didn't think PIT was that good. Needed a bit more humor, but it's alright if you don't expect it to be as funny as the previous games.

I didn't like PIT. It wasn't bad per se, but it wasn't nearly as good as the first one. And the babies were annoying.

I wonder how the Bowser-side plot will unveal. What we will go around doing as Bowser, terrorize defenseless toads and eat people? He's not really a 'Let's help everyone on my path' type.

    Game looks great anyhow.

I have had a love/hate relationship with the baby characters since Yoshi's Island. :P

I agree about the use of the two screens. The whole story of this game is completely silly and crazy....just the way I like these games.

If this game comes out next month in Japan, how have is this the first time I've heard about it? Have I just not been paying attention, or is Nintendo really so apathetic about the hardcore these days that they don't even publicize the few games that interest them?

On a less contentious note, this looks awesome. PIT was a letdown for me, but Superstar Saga is probably my favorite GBA game. The premise of this one sounds much better than babies.

I think it might just have been you not paying attention. They released footage of it back when they announced the DSi.

The thought of playing pretty much the entire game in the guts of another character is creepy as fuck.

I mean, I had trouble with Jabu Jabu for fuck's sake.

PiT was okay. I certainly prefer SSS.

My biggest complaint with PiT was that there were tons of sections where you sent the babies off by themselves for a couple of rooms per dungeon. So by time I got to the end game, the babies were like 15 levels higher than the big bros.

Also, I loved the variations of Jump/Hammer/Fire-Bolt Ball in SSS. In PiT the Fire Flower became an item and the hammers became much more dominant.

Note that my alltime favorite moment is in SSS when Luigi gets the Boltball. It was like the perfect answer to Mario's Fireball.

My main complaint with PiT was that it was a completely linear RPG. There was no backtracking or exploring or secrets to discover which was a big downer. I still thought it was pretty fun overall, though.

Now, this game looks amazing. Can't wait for it to come out.

Seems to me that when Mario or Luigi does a certain thing during battle their side of the bar grows a little and when they meet you get to use a super attack.

Awesome! I love the Mario & Luigi games, and it looks like this one's zany as ever. I was worried the world might not be as colorful or varied if Mario and Luigi were inside Bowser for the whole game, but they're changing up the appearances well according to the video. It looks like the Bros. spend some time outside as well, given a few segments.

The best thing about the trailer is that apparently Bowser's adventuring M.O. is to punch the bejeezus out of everything in sight. Enemies, rocks, walls, castles, none of you are safe!

I'm hoping Fawful doesn't get played out. He was great in the first game because that was all he was in. He's still great because he hasn't been tainted beyond that. If they ruin him in 3 then that's all that anyone is going to remember the game as. The game that ruined Fawful.

One of the press releases mentioned that Bowser didn't realize he ate them. I wonder if Fawful hypnotized Bowser or something and made him do it. Then the story goes from there.
