Search Timer issues

I have a question about a very specific operability

Say you search a forum, or thread, or whatever, but you use a three (or less) character search term

I was looking to see if there was a pet thread, so i searched for 'pet'

and it got pissy, and said I couldn't do that, it's too short.
so I try to search for 'pets', and bam, i have to not search yet, because of the timer, even though I haven't queryed anything yet.

maybe this is dumb, but hey, thought it might be worth an ask, can that lockout timer be disabled in such a case?

This is asked about once a month and the answer has been no, due to design and server strain.

Server strain? Maybe on successful queries, but not when you fail to execute a search at all. When you try searching with a term that is too short that should be caught by the board software, not the database server.

It would be more work than it's worth to make it work so that unsuccessful searches don't activate the timer. Work better spent in other places.

What about some javascript that you could drop into the page template that pops up an alert box and doesn't submit if the search query has a word under 4 letters? If someone else does the work, that's not too hard to drop in.
