Stop little red bugs from eating my gerbil's dong.

One of my gerbil's (an older guy) seems to have a bunch of red bugs that swarm his penile 'area' and go to town, making it all raw and such.
I remove them when I can, but obviously I can't be a dong watcher for 24/7. He seems to be the only one affected of all my animals and only in that area.
Any suggestions like non-toxic anti-bug sprays or candles or whatnot? I appreciate it!~

Well, I can just call and ask them, I suppose.
Probably would help if I can figure out what they are.
And if you guys are wondering why this wasn't the first thing I did, the vets around here (Missoureh) don't have any sort of small animal specialty. The smallest animals they actively treat are cats.

I need to know how to keep them out of the room.
