MTV is issuing a boycott of WMG because they said developers don't give them enough money, and if they don't start giving them more, they're going to stop letting them use their music.

    MTV struck first.

Lolz at the greedy record labels. They seem determined to run their business into the ground. What we have a way to actually sell music to people instead of them stealing it? Quick double the price so I can buy more blow.

There are surprisingly little details I can find on this though. It seems to be more of a soft boycott while they are negotiating. There doesn't seem to be any big press release as of yet. What will be interesting is if MTV completely boycotts WMG across all its products and not just Rock Band.

Man, that list makes up, like, half of the Rock Band 2 setlist.

Also, if it wasn't bad enough that people were unsure if Metallica had gone exclusive to Guitar Hero, now they're under the Warner label. Now we'll have double the paranoia.

Well, according to Metallica's Wiki page, only Death Magnetic was under WMG and it says the contract with them ran out in Nov of last year. There is no update on a current label.

    EDIT:
Oh shit, nevermind. I just remembered something about Elektra and when I checked, they're owned by Warner.

I wonder if the music business will ever realise that scorched earth policies only work if you don't care that there is nothing left when you're done?

Well at least that'll solve the Youtube problem, lol (any videos of people playing RB with WMG songs have been getting taken down for the last few months).

But honestly, this has to hurt WMG far more than MTV... despite not being able to offer choice bands the amount of other bands available is pretty much infinite I'd think.

And yet, they aren't the only game in town.

    SONY Music Entertainment
    EMI
Columbia Records (actually a subgroup of [strike]EMI[/strike] SONY, but a bigger list)
And here's a list of all the labels owned by Universal Music Group.

That covers the rest of the 'Big Four'. The best way to look at it is like a kind of exclusivity deal.

    GODDAMMIT! What the fuck, MTV.

You are pissed at MTV? Really? How bout the greedy fucks at the record label who think they should get the lions share of the money? Right now my understanding is the label, artist, MTV/harmonix and either Sony, Nintendo or MS each get a 1/4th of the money. So with WMG wanting more either someone has to give up their share of the cash or we start seeing 3 and 4 dollar songs. This is the best advertising the record labels have had in years and they are actually making money instead of paying for it. WMG is being fucking stupid.

Since I found out SONY now owns Columbia, here's a list of SONY's labels. And here is a list of EMI labels.

There is plenty of opportunity for good music to be had. And that doesn't even cover many of the indie labels that exist or don't release anything in partnership with WMG.

I completely disagree with this. On just about every level. For doing the least amount of the work, they should get the least amount of the pay. I mean they do nothing different than when they put the song on itunes and yet they want more money, just because. They also negotiated a deal with HMX and then when they realized HMX was making a profit they attempted to change the deal.

And what is this shit saying record labels should get most of the money? I'd have figured the artists should be getting the most out of the sale of their music. But fuck them, I guess. They should be satisfied with getting maybe a dollar off of every new CD sold. Maybe.

And by the way, Unbreakable, Warner has been flexing their nuts over demanding more for whatever it is they do for a while now. MTV has basically just told them to get over themselves since they can provide a measure of proof that record sales increase due to inclusion in rhythm music games.

Or maybe doubling the price of DLC is worth it...

    Also, from their Wikipedia article;
Since late 2008, WMG has continually pulled various other YouTube videos featuring music belonging to various bands and music labels, regardless of disclaimers. Many of these claims have included videos belonging to groups who are not signed with WMG.

They were not happy with their 25% and wanted more. And MTV was right to tell them to go fuck themselves. This sucks because there are good bands on that list, but I think Warner will cave sooner rather than later. RB and GH are probably their most reliable source of income these days.
