Can't get my PS2 to run Final Fantasy Tactics

I have one of the release PS2's, still in pretty good shape. I also have a disc of Final Fantasy Tactics, in considerably good shape for how old it is. It's one of those black-on-the-underneath discs, though I don't know if that matters. When I pop the CD in my PS2, I get a horrible whirring sound coming out of the machine. I thought maybe it might have been something wrong with Ps1 discs, since all my PS2 games work fine in it, but I tested some other CDs that were similar (such as Star Ocean for PS1) without a problem. It general, the browser screen on the PS2 displays a 'reading disc' line while the whirring noise is going on, and then 'disc read error' after.

What can I do? I really want to get this game working. I'd use my Ps1, but I'm nowhere near it at the moment.

An old trick to get black-bottom CD's working on your PS2 is to place two small, inch-long or so strips of scotch tape on the label-side of the disk as close to the inner circle as you can get. When you put the tape on make sure they are parallel with each other, they should sort of form an "H" with the strips of tape and the circle in the center of the disk. The reasoning behind this remedy is that the small added weight of the tape adds extra balance to the disk and prevents it from wobbling around inside of the PS2's disk tray so it will spin straighter. It's easy to peel the tape off if it doesn't work so there's no real risk here. Almost all of my old PSX games have tape on them now :P, it really works well.

I can't believe that worked, but it did.

    Wow.
