OpenCritic has it at a 98 right now, best of the series, 99 for XBX, and a 97 for PS4P. RDR was a 95 in retrospect. Most of everyone tossing out 100s and 90s. Seems good.
Beware of spoilers -- the review on Mashable gave away a big map detail I don't think we had heard about before.
Apparently the ENTIRE American side of the map from the first game is in this one.

From the Digital Foundry analysis, looks like I was right to get it on the X. I have a 4K OLED with HDR to play it on so I figured the One X would push the detail a bit better. I imagine this will become pretty much the norm as the generation goes on unless we get another hardware refresh from Sony at some point.
I didn't watch the video because I didn't want to see better visuals and be sad with my regular PS4, but I hope the performance is solid on the regular one. I have no desire to upgrade (dammit Sony, don't you do yet ANOTHER hardware refresh) especially with them starting to talk about PS5 and all that.

This may be the one time I'll ever concede that I wish I had a One X. I'm still going to be plenty happy with the game on my PS4 Pro, but I feel like their checkerboarding technique leaves something to be desired (even DF points out that other games using checkerboarding don't end up looking this soft). I'm sure I'll forget about it completely once I'm playing the game but the sharpness on the One X looks great.

Im not normally a graphics snob really. But i have a 4k tv and full 4k games so far have been amazing on it. The checkerboard frames are an amazing accomplishment in programming but you are getting half res, plain and simple, in most instances of gameplay. It still looks beautiful on modern tvs but real 4k is like right there!
The HD RDR1 was just gorgeous so I think I will find myself wandering in RDR2 a lot from the screens so far.
So yeah... I know my mistake was going to reddit in the first place, but I'm pretty sure some prick just spoiled the ending of the game on r/gaming. Sorted by new, which I never do, but it's a slow work day and I already looked at the hot submissions at lunch. Anyway, the first post in new is this asshole saying "this happens at the end of RDR2". Could be false, but it seems plausible.
Anyway, stay away from new on r/gaming...

Is it right there though? Top end PC hardware has trouble with highly detailed 4K scenes at stable frame rates. As far as consoles have come they are extremely resource limited compared to a high end PC. Games running in native 4K on consoles are making serious sacrifices to do so and are likely using adaptive resolution (so they aren't always native 4K anyway). Adaptive resolution and checker boarding are basically the ways you have to get a console game to approach UHD resolutions.
I get the impression that whichever platform has the absolute best visuals will be noticed (without prompting) by about 0.002 percent of the gaming population.
More than once I found myself temporarily hypnotised by the musculature and skin creases on my horse’s butt. That’s a weird sentence, but you’re going to spending a lot of time looking at a horse’s butt. It might as well impress you.
I dunno, I'm having a hard time squaring away these kind of "feature bloat" mechanics like butt muscles and shrinking testicles, knowing that people were worked to the bone on this kind of shit that nobody will notice or care about. Like, yay that you did it, but boo how you did it.

That is kind of the problem. They go overboard. I would rather they make a real hammy Western.

This game even fucking remembers where you dropped your hat! Even if you walk or ride miles away from it. For no discernible game-play reason at all, (seemingly) other than R*'s commitment to simulation fidelity.

I'm gonna play it on my PS4 and be happy.
It's actually incredibly stark if you actually watch the Digital Foundry video. It's the difference between blurry checker boarding and actual 2160p resolution (though I assume they use adaptive res on the One X, so it probably drops to like 1800p'ish at points). On a 4K TV the differences between those two things is very noticeable. The hyperbolic shade throwing at people who care about this kind of stuff is unnecessary.
You should absolutely enjoy the game on whatever console you have access to. Doesn't diminish that for those of us with access to both there was a decision to be made for which there is a clear and quantifiable correct choice.
It seems like they really dedicated themselves to the immersion in this one. I have my doubts about how fun it is, but I'm willing to allow that not everything about every game must be "fun".
I'm pretty hyped about this. Don't have a ton of time to play games nowadays, but I can see myself getting lost in Cowboy Simulator 2018® for the next 2-3 months to relax and take it easy. Wish it didn't take like 2 hours to install though.

They didn't use adaptiv resolution on any of the consoles. Digital Foundry would have mentioned that, they always do. It's a straight 4K on the X and it really impressed them - something that not many games have, as of late.

Ah. I might need to actually pick this up. I was going to hold off as, try as I might, I could never really get into GTAV (I only got as far as the first heist, which was admittedly great, only to be followed by boring), and I was disappointed that Rockstar never put out an enhancement patch for it on console (that I know of).
I'll need to watch those DF reviews closely (and link them on the Xbox thread).

Counterpoint: I can barely tell the difference between games running on Pro and non-pro consoles on TVs 60 inches or smaller as it is, and I'm not the only one. Graphical improvement have become so small and granular to the naked eye I'm kind of amazed this kind of comparison has gained much traction.

I notice way more difference with HDR than I do with resolution.

You don't get HDR without higher resolutions anyway, because it's kind of a major part of how it's implemented (it's a reason why you won't find "normal HD" televisions with HDR implementation used by...well, anything by now, even though 1080p sets are still sold plenty).
I see much bigger improvement in visual quality with 1440p and 2160p than "just HDR", but that's because not everyone does HDR right yet. It's harder to fuck up something as straightforward as "higher resolution". To each their own though.
I totally thought this was out tonight and came home hyped to play it.
Aw.
am currently counting down the 1 hour 31 minutes till it unlocks here. so close, yet so far...
Where are you, and did you buy digitally? Because my understanding is that the digital stores generally just pick 12am EST as the default time the entire world has to wait, which would make that 6 hours from now as of this post.
...Which means it unlocks at 1AM my time, because hey, fuck the Atlantic time zone.
