Fishing is a real mother fucker in RDR 2. I have to specifically take my hands off the controller from normal use and hold the right stick specifically to reel, and even then some of those fish are right bastards. I remember I hurt myself trying to reel one, like ripped the padding off a finger or something.
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

I switched fishing (reeling I mean) to the X button vs the thumbstick thingy rotation.
I kinda hate that fishing minigame. It's like it's designed to kill control sticks. I suppose it itself wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that your character only spins his reel at a rate of one rotation per every ten of yours.
edit:
and I also kinda hate how the game wants you tapping the run button to sprint/gallop. Those buttons only have a finite number of uses before wear and tear starts afflicting them. It's a pretty huge number, but when you set things up so that people are tapping the button rapidly to perform one of the most common actions...
IMO it's nice if you're catching a salmon or some small daily quest fish all of five feet from the shore. It's when you try to haul in a big catch from a long cast where it really wears out its welcome.

Also question: I'm a bit into my second playthrough and I have still never seen any
dinosaur bones.
Are they easy to spot when you come across them? I don't know if I'm walking past them or just haven't explored the right places.

You have to be right on top of them, basically. Even knowing where they are (using a map or guide) they're tough to spot. Some of them are on weird spots tucked on the blind side of hills, things like that.

Hmm that's unfortunate. But at least I enjoy aimlessly wandering around this game world.
Are there any stranger missions or collections etc you have to complete before the end of chapter 6? I barely did any side stuff on my first playthrough and now I want to try for 100%, and I know most stuff can be finished in the epilogue but not sure if that applies to everything.

A bunch , I know there is a lot camp requests that can only be done at certain points for instance javiers robbing missions can only be done when you are in that specific point of the story l you may want a guide.

So I've had this game for a bit but somehow never got around to playing it. Never finished the story of the first one, so I've decided to head into MP first. I just finished all the basic tutorial stuff and have my own camp. I'm playing the PS4 personally.

Man you weren't kidding about this. Even with a map showing me the right areas I'm struggling to find these. I wonder how many people actually managed to find them all without a guide.

So a question, I assume so but with games that charge for it I always think its worth checking, once you go into the character editor thing if you want to change your character, can you back out without changing and not use up the free appearance change?

Just as a warning in the past when people changed their character appearance like that it reset their daily streak. So if you're at max streak be real careful here.

Started playing the first few missions of online story mode. It's kind of weird that I have to sit and wait for matchmaking instead of just opting to do it by myself. Especially as the other person quitting makes me fail the mission. Unless I'm missing something? My asocial personality is kind of affronted by getting thrown into playing with a random person. I guess this is why I don't do online stuff generally.
I got killed by some random, but didn't notice I'd lost anything when I respawned. What's the penalty for dying? Can they nick my stuff?
Also my camp just seems to randomly teleport around, which is fun.
There isn't any significant penalty for dying. I think that your cores get damaged a bit when you respawn.
The main problem with dying is that it may disrupt your ability to complete a mission. If you need to transport a wagon from point a to point b, then you can can't protect that wagon while you are taking a dirt nap.

The fact that you can't do the story missions solo is really shit.
Trying to do one of the earliest missions. Sat there for several minutes while it tries to matchmake and then it kicks me out because it can't find another player. So fuck me I guess I'm not allowed to play these missions? What is the point.
I ended up skipping the story missions. Except for the moonshiner story missions, but you are permitted to solo those.
I think that occasionally "complete a story mission" is a daily task. You may want to wait for such a day before returning to the story missions.

Do I not have to do the story missions to unlock stuff? Like I don't have a fishing pole or binoculars yet, I assumed they were gated. It doesn't explain much.
They are gated, but they're not gated behind story missions. They're gated behind player levels. So go do basically anything and earn exp. The assorted stranger missions are a good way to get started with acquiring gold. A priority with the gold is to unlock some of the professions.
Collector: has the highest money earning potential if you are willing to follow the scavenger hunt route outlined by the jeanropke map (online third party resource). It also kinda vomits exp at you since you start finding collector items around town as you're passing through or find some pieces while looting enemies.
Trader: hunting profession. Bring in 3* carcasses for the greatest profit per kill. White tail bucks are your bread and butter. You can eventually unlock a hunting wagon that can store carcasses. The wagon storage is preserved through disconnects and session hops. Until then I recommend stealing a horse. Then you can haul back three carcasses to camp: one on your horse, one on the stolen horse, and one lassoed and drug back to camp. It's often recommended to play the resupply missions rather than paying $20 for supplies simply to help maximize exp income. IMO just save yourself some time and run local deliveries instead of long, but complete at least one long to unlock access to moonshiner a few levels earlier.
Moonshiner: a mostly passive moneymaker business. Trader is a prequiste. You need to either complete a long range sale or reach trader level 5 to unlock moonshiner. You pay for supplies and periodically make sales. They orders for the day have timers before they expire, but apparently that doesn't matter since the patrons place identical orders every day (weird). You need to be careful when driving the wagon to avoid damage. Never go off road. When approaching a revenue checkpoint, initially just stop for inspection. Often they just wave you through. Sometimes their inspection finds nothing. In both of those cases you will just have a gentle trip to the buyer. If they attack you, then waves of revenue men on horseback will attack you during the sale. However there is a trick to stop this. At the checkpoint, once the shootout starts, just kill everyone with the exception of one man. Hogtie him, summon your horse, and stow him on your horse. Apparently the IRS is afraid of hostage situations and will leave you alone until you finish the mission. I have been quite fond of the Tall Trees location because of the nearby fast travel post. Watch out for the bear.
Bounty hunter: the only profession that awards gold. It involves the most shooting. You get a decent number of treasure maps from enemy loot too. You will max out collector so fast from all of the looted bodies.
There's no real right or wrong way to go about unlocking the professions, but I'd probably prioritize them like this.
Anything presently on sale > bounty hunter (because gold income) > collector (to make enemy loot more lucrative) > trader > moonshiner
A note. The only reason that I put moonshiner below trader is because trader is a prerequisite.

Cool, thanks. I guess I will just start doing some stranger missions and bounties and do the story missions whenever I can.
Unlocking the professions also unlocks profession specific daily quests, which both increases your potential gold income ftom dailies and can make it easier to preserve your daily streak.
For example: eating stew from the stew pot, changing the camp style, petting a dog, drinking a bottle of antique liquor, drinking your own strong moonshine, changing the bar decor, and dancing with the band are all super easy daily challenges that are great to see when you don't feel like playing RDO tonight but want to maintain your daily streak.

Anyone know if there should be a way to get through locked doors? I've managed to kick open one or two but most won't budge. I bought a lockbreaker but can't find any way of using it, I assume that's just for safes? Are most locked doors just inaccessible?
I've actually never messed with locked doors. I just assumed that most of the buildings in the towns are for show and aren't actually meant to be entered. I know that some of the carriages have compartments on the back that you can access via the lockbreaker, but I also think that you can just bust them open if you're ok with being loud.
One time I tried to enter a business that was closed, bounced off the door, and then a witness went crying to the Saint Denis police. I was surprised they had any left at that point really.

I managed to break into one house with locked doors by jumping through a window, but that was inside a gang hideout. I kind of feel like most locked houses are off limits but I thought maybe the big fancy places would be intended for you to rob. I tried getting inside the big house at Emerald Ranch but no bueno.
Just realized I own every weapon (online) , it’s been a super long and weird trip from not being able to even afford anything remotely interesting.

I had another go at online earlier and I just can't get into it. I tried to sign up for a role but apparently I need 15 gold for that and I have less than 2. Then some random hogtied me and put me on train tracks, then clearly got bored because the train didn't come and untied me. I just stood there and didn't do anything so they wandered off.
Yesterday I tried to do a story mission which was "go steal this boat from these people, and try not to kill any of them" and just before I got there a random player ran up and dynamited them all to death. Then I got in the boat and started heading to the drop off point and my connection died.
I dunno, I'm not really sure how to make things fun. Think I'll just stick to going for 100% on the single player.
I feel like you have to play online with a buddy or more to force it to be fun. Whereas the campaign is perfectly fine to just be solo as designed and it’s perfect.

Yeah I've just recently got to chapter 3 on my 2nd playthrough, and I'm recovering from surgery, and it's ideal just being able to wander out and do some chilled fishing or hunting when I'm feeling too spaced out to do actual missions. Still feel like I have so much of the map to explore because I didn't roam around much my first time through. And it's just such a nice world to meander about in.
I liked how at the end you could visit some of the folks from earlier in the game, like the widow lady up north. The old vet was dead before then in my playthrough but apparently you can revisit him at the end as well.

I also just finished this up (for the first time) in the last few days. What a fantastic story, although I thought most of the Epilogue was decidedly unnecessary.
I do want to share one particularly tragic moment: during the Epilogue, I went to finish the Hamish questline. After Hamish gifted Buell to me, I inadvertently clicked the "check saddlebag" button instead of the "mount up" button. The horse got spooked, kicked me once square in the head, and I died instantly. Upon reloading, Buell seemed to be gone forever.
Hilariously this week I just fucked up my 40 day streak. Its like they knew.
Oh they fucking knew I was so pissed when I uninstalled and looked up on reddit the update was first thing there . I’ve been redowloading it for the last three hours.
Be nice to saddle up again. Hopefully we get some interesting content.

I picked this up on the steam summer sale. I was really enjoying it right up until I got to Saint Denis. Upon arriving in town my game has been crashing after just a few minutes of playtime. The graphics get all glitchy for a few seconds than the game locks up and crashes to desktop with an error "err_gfx_state." It seems like random events are triggering it. The game was constantly crashing upon getting pick pocketed walking into of the weapons dealer. It also crashed when on being asked to clear rats out of a saloon.
So far I've deleted the SGA files in MyDocs, added -ignorepipelinecache to mystartup, verified the game files, updated my video drivers and made sure the render pipeline was set to DX12. IDK what to do at this point.
You guys got any suggestions? I've been enjoying the game so far but this has basically blocked me from progressing in the game.
I’m on console for this so I don’t have any pc advice , only random thing I can suggest is monitor the temp to make sure it isn’t because saint Dennis is making the gpu work overtime and it’s getting too warm.
