PSP - low headphone sound, weak visualizers?

Two questions about the PSP. I've got a 3000, and while the sound output is pretty decent normally, when I plug headphones in, I have to crank the volume almost to max just to beat out ambient noise in a relatively quiet environment.
Also, what's up with the included visualizers? The only one that seems to work is the one that looks like a LED equalizer. The thumbnail images make them look sorta neat, but most of them do nothing.
