I want my WRT54G to disable wireless access during set hours on weekdays. Is there a firmware that supports this, or should I just pick one and use a cron job to turn the wireless on and off?

dd-wrt is great. Be super careful installing it.

Be super careful, but the instructions are very clear and it's not exactly difficult.

I used to run dd-wrt, but I've since switched to Tomato and like that a lot better. I find it to be more stable, and it has some handy features out of the box (primarily realtime bandwidth graphs) that dd-wrt didn't provide. The only issue is that the Tomato devs have never bothered to make a version for the later VXWorks-based WRT54G models (versions 5 and higher), meaning you have to have an older v1-4 WRT54G. If you make sure to get a WRT54GL, though, it's not a problem. The L stands for Linux, and the Linux-based units are much more homebrew firmware friendly. If you're interested in custom firmware you can save yourself a lot of hassle by making sure you get a GL.
