Aparently the fires are now threatening Yea. I know a whole bunch of people up there. I hope they're ok . And y'know all the people I don't know. I hope they're OK too.
A friend showed me a photo taken by another friend in Moe (not too far from Churchill, where nine people have died). I don't have a copy of the photo, but it is fucking red down there.
The sky, the trees, the streets, the houses, everything.
108 confirmed dead now. So it's the worst natural disaster in Australia's recorded history. My mother's suggestion: "Hell Saturday". I think she's just about right on that.

I saw this on the news, ugh it's so awful. I hope everyone's friends and family are alright.

The stark contrast between the blue sky and the plumes of smoke is amazing.
My favourite footage though is a guy screaming from his pajero to his mate, flames only a hundred or so away.
"GET THE VALIANT! GET THE VALIANT!"
all the homes in Victoria are made of corrugated iron
There are a lot of sheds around in that area due to it being in bushland.
That and tin roofing is also popular.
That probably makes sense.
Still, it seems every news report I see, when they get to the point where they mention all the homes lost, they just cut to a pile of corrugated iron or I guess tin roofing. Every time!
Edit: so did they catch any of those firebugs yet?
A firebug's been charged in NSW, but no word on any in Victoria. Pretty much half the state's being treated as a crime scene. The Yinnar/Churchill fires are definitely deliberately lit.
My mum reminded me that one of my classmates in primary school lives (or lived, at least) in Yinnar. Nice, big house. Surrounded by bushes and trees. We're kind of afraid of calling her number.
probably the most eerie image for me was seeing a photo of the newsreader who died, standing atop piles of rubble identical to those we're seeing at the moment, from the ash wednesday fires. it's the same scene; blackened tin rooves, crumpled on the ground, and a lonely, unscathed chimney stack
Imagine being one of the people stuck in a car or house...
The "survivability" distance of Saturday's heat was about four times their height - a 35-metre high fire would directly imperil those within 140 metres.
The body would get over-stressed, the core temperature would get too high and the metabolism would break down in those conditions. He said bushfires produce their own volatile gases which in turn burn - and on a day as hot as Saturday, it does not take much for them to ignite.
Dr Tolhurst said people could be surrounded by a series of spot fires. Breathing would become difficult due to burning gases and the body would dehydrate quickly. Death from a form of asphyxiation was also possible.

Holy shit that's like something out of the fucking Bible when God was pissed at someone.
Our war on nature begins with global warming, but it does not end there. It will not end until every species of global reach has been found, stopped and defeated.

Whoa fuck
Yeah, the family's now confirmed that his and his wife's bodies were in the rubble of their house.
The sky, the trees, the streets, the houses, everything.
this is so horrible
Just to be sure though I'm knocking on wood.

"GET THE VALIANT! GET THE VALIANT!"
my dad used to take our dogs out to this country town, Marysville, and take them on hikes
Marysville is fucking gone, literally burned to the ground
I was in the city on Saturday and walking around outside felt like being in a blast furnace
the only good thing I can say about it is we got some amazing photographs out of it
those burnt-out cars are some of the most chilling things I've ever seen
Spoilers from the next TF film.
