Just tried to hit up the Wii Shop channel and it told me an update was available. Haven't downloaded it yet, just a heads-up.

so both Wikipedia and Nintendo's site are unclear/vague: are VC games only stored on the Wii's internal memory, or can you store them on SD cards with the restriction that you can only play on your own machine?

You can store them on SD and they can only be played on the Wii they were downloaded on.

“I do think here in the Americas we want to be a bit more strategic in how we use the titles [on Virtual Console]… If there’s a month where we don’t have a fantastic lineup of Nintendo-packaged software, that’s where I want to release a great SNES game or a great N64 game to maintain the momentum.”
2007 is full of months where they don't have a fantastic lineup, so I think we can expect some of the real classics pretty soon.

Sad thing is that Super Star Soldier and a couple of others support the Wiimote. So depending on which game he downloaded the article would have been totally different. What an idiot. What a dumb site.

That's kinda crap, actually. It's not like there's a dearth of good games across those 5 systems. They could easily maintain a regular level of output on the VC, dry spell or no.

Also, I don't like how he says A great SNES game. Like, just one? VC will really lose some of it's allure if it ends up as some kind of expensive, downloadable "greatest hits" service.

Um, so I keep dying in the Legend of Zelda because I keep walking everywhere, not knowing where to go. It's my first time playing this and I'm loving it, I just don't know where the hell to go next after the first dungeon. So then I hear that the original came with a map and I shouldn't feel too bad, right?

Well, I went over to gamefaqs, and these walkthroughs are crazy in-depth, telling me to go blow a hole in a wall for container hearts like within the first five minutes and then getting that master sword that has been taunting me for a week now. I am not one to use guides and I feel dirty using them...but...is this game an exception?? Is this normal?

It's not crap. The VC needs to continue offering compelling new downloads for the duration of the Wii's lifespan. They don't want to blow their load early. Suppose they continue with their 10 per month figure. If the Wii lives for 5 years, that's 600 games. By then they could pretty much have every game they have the rights to that's worth downloading. And the service will almost certainly remain functional at least for one more generation. They're not in any hurry here.

I wouldn't feel dirty. Back when I played it, the only way to find out how to get somewhere or do something was to talk to other friends or kids at school. Or hope that a gaming magazine might have a feature on the game.

Gamefaqs just puts it all in one place.

Go to google and search images for Zelda Map, you'll probably find it, you shouldn't need anything other than that though.

Another tip, every dungeon has 1 room dedicated to finding the next dungeon.

For Example, in the first dungeon, is an old man that says,
"East most penninsula has the secret"
Or something to that affect. Basically, from where you are, just head east and explore. Its supposed to be a challenge, to find from place to place.

I still have that map in my basement (although its all taped together these days). Using a guide is up to you. I find it robs me of some of the fulfillment and makes it a lot less fun to just glance at a paper every 30 seconds and follow it like a script. You will be much more proud if you explore things on your own. I would at least suggest printing the map out, but I would try to play it on your own (though it can be VERY tricky at times) and use the guide for when you get stuck for more than an hour or so... sure you won't get every single heart container and secret, but you will enjoy it a lot more when you figure it out on your own.

You've got a point. Still, I don't want them to blow their load so much as release some more "crappy" old games. With the system Reggie's talking about, I'm concerned that when games do come, it will usually be the AAA high-profile games that everyone already has played/owned. This works out for those who haven't had a chance to play Metroid etc., but I want my niche shit, dammit.

The original Zelda was as much about exploration as it was about puzzles and combat. It's not something that you can finish quickly on your own if you don't know where to go. There's no shame in using a map to speed it up, if you don't want to make a long-term project out of a VC game. Just wait until you see the second quest.

Does anyone know what the point is of connecting the Wii Shop to your "My Nintendo" account?

You can register your old Nintendo games with mynintendo.com by typing in some little code that comes printed on a piece of paper that came with the original game (that you probably threw away). If you register games in this fashion, wouldn't it make sense for you to receive that game for free when/if it is released for VC?

If so, I will squeal like a piggy.

The point is to establish ownership of games you've purchased, so you can re-download if you get a new console. They haven't been doing registration that long anyway.

Thank you all very much for the replies and advice.

I think I will go the printout map. I guess if it came along with the game, it's not so big a deal. I totally agree that using a guide takes a lot of the fun factor out, "like a script" is exactly how I feel and I want to play this game as it was meant to be played.

Thanks Kor for that great tip, now I remember that part! I'll have to pay more attention to that old man in the next dungeon I guess...

Steev, that's a good point. I think if I got really stuck in the game (if it took me more than two hours of romping around and dying), I might take a peak at a hint or two. I only mean for this game to fulfill a part of my life where I didn't get to enjoy this game and in doing so, enjoy and appreciate Twilight Princess. (er, after LttP, OoT,MM, and WW  ) Being sheltered growing up, I guess I could feel overwhelmed and intimidated, but actually I look forward to enjoying this legacy, one game at time.

Is anyone else thinking that maybe they should have varied the price based on the game? I mean, I wouldn't mind paying five dollars for, say, Legend of Zelda or Super Mario Bros or whatever. Hell, for SMB3 I'd go as high as eight or ten. I'd pay at least fifteen for Phantasy Star IV if that gets up there. But five bucks for, say, the original Mario Bros, or eight for Altered Beast strikes me as excessive. Some of these classic games age much better than others.
