Is anyone else thinking that maybe they should have varied the price based on the game? I mean, I wouldn't mind paying five dollars for, say, Legend of Zelda or Super Mario Bros or whatever. Hell, for SMB3 I'd go as high as eight or ten. I'd pay at least fifteen for Phantasy Star IV if that gets up there. But five bucks for, say, the original Mario Bros, or eight for Altered Beast strikes me as excessive. Some of these classic games age much better than others.
Prices are varied. Just in a direction you don't want.
SNES games START at 800. Link to the Past is 900 in Japan.

So is Sim City. 900 points in Japan is 900 yen, which is less than $8. Thus far, all U.S. games are 800 points.

1UP have done a second edition of their Worth It/Not Worth It columns, expanded now to include more general retrogamey stuff - XBLA titles and the Classic Controller are in this one, along with the three new VC releases. It seems that they're intending to make it a regular thing.

[spoiler:476c03e49c]There's a cheat that allows you invincibility in Dungeon Explorer. At some point in the game, the King will no longer be on his throne and, if you have the cheat active, you can walk up to the throne and "sit" on it. When you do, you'll get an alternate ending which basically says, "Awesome, I'm the king now. I can have all the booze and girls I want."[/spoiler:476c03e49c]

The ending text is terribly translated in the original HuCard, but it's still very funny.

Um, so I keep dying in the Legend of Zelda because I keep walking everywhere, not knowing where to go. It's my first time playing this and I'm loving it, I just don't know where the hell to go next after the first dungeon. So then I hear that the original came with a map and I shouldn't feel too bad, right?

Well, I went over to gamefaqs, and these walkthroughs are crazy in-depth, telling me to go blow a hole in a wall for container hearts like within the first five minutes and then getting that master sword that has been taunting me for a week now. I am not one to use guides and I feel dirty using them...but...is this game an exception?? Is this normal?

I still have that map in my basement (although its all taped together these days). Using a guide is up to you. I find it robs me of some of the fulfillment and makes it a lot less fun to just glance at a paper every 30 seconds and follow it like a script. You will be much more proud if you explore things on your own. I would at least suggest printing the map out, but I would try to play it on your own (though it can be VERY tricky at times) and use the guide for when you get stuck for more than an hour or so... sure you won't get every single heart container and secret, but you will enjoy it a lot more when you figure it out on your own.

Or, if you want to use a "guide" that won't make you feel dirty, download A map from here ... that way you're no better equiped than people who bought the original game way back when.

Christ, 1up. I wonder if they'll ever get over the fact that the VC is about faithful ports first and foremost. I could not believe my eyes when I saw them bitch that Donkey Kong and Mario Bros are the NES versions instead of the arcade originals. Uh, yeah? As for their gripe that Mario 64 doesn't include the DS-exclusive extras, I'm not even going to comment.

Depends who you get. It looks like Parish is in charge of the retro column, and while he does occasionally hate wildly on some... surprising things, he's pretty level-headed and not in the least bit disparaging of older games because they don't push ten billion polys around the screen.

Unlike some other web publications I can mention.

Oh, also, he liked Solomon's Key. So I approve.

His review of the classic controller is kind of dumb too. It'd be a lot thicker, and heavier, and you'd need more batteries, if it wasn't connected to the remote.

There's a steering wheel attachment that comes with the couple Ubisoft racers, but I don't think one more attachment counts as "ridiculous."

The other complaint about connecting to the remote I can understand though, especially with the way it's worded in the revew, which is basically "It's weird but at least you don't have to charge more batteries."

It made sense to me. They were saying don't buy the NES version of Donkey Kong, cause it sucks. These reviews don't need to be about how accurate the port is. A review that says Donkey Kong on the NES is exactly like Donkey Kong on the NES is entirely worthless. A review that says the game isn't as good as the arcade because it's missing an entire quarter of the game makes a little more sense.

And actually, I do think it's a valid complaint to point out that NES Donkey Kong isn't as good as the original. I think Nintendo needs to make the arcade version of DK available as it really hasn't been and stop using the NES as their main version of DK (Animal Crossing/GBA/VC).

Both DK and DKJR have been given horrible home versions over the years and it would be great to see Arcade titles added to the VC. Plus, this would set the framework for arcade Popeye which would definately sell millions of Wii consoles.

Yeah I knew about the steering wheel that comes with that GT game, but I wasn't really counting that as it doesn't plug into the remote, it's just a plastic shell. Not to mention it's free, which would count against his "ridiculous" claims, in my opinion. I'm not one to complain about free stuff (unless it's an STD).

Quick quesiton. Does the Operations Guide for Legend of Zelda have the nifty little Dungeon map things?

For those that don't know what I'm talking about. A small picture in the original LoZ had a scroll with 9 little emblems on it.

These Emblems were actually the Dungeons levels, and in-turn the map to the Dungeons.

For example, the Eagle, the Skull, the Swastica thingy, the Lion.

Though the Manual had a fully drawn eagle, the Dungeon ended up looking like this:

I was primarily talking about this:
But once again Nintendo has trotted out the weak NES port of the game rather than the complete arcade original.
The snide tone implies that he thinks Nintendo should have "trotted out" the arcade original instead, which is strange since I don't see Arcade listed among the five systems the VC supports. Along with his complaint about Mario 64, he seems to expect Nintendo to be releasing the best version of a game and not the one that was actually on the console. Next he'll complain if they don't release the GBA ports of FF4/FF6. He should just dedicate a paragraph in the beginning to talking about how much he wishes Nintendo added online play and extra features, and then stop poisoning the reviews with it.

The sad thing is that I have trauma center and super monkey ball and wii sports that I can play and all I'm doing is trying to finish this NES Zelda game.

Any chance we will be seeing this on VC?
I don't know why people keep doing this. The answer is always *shrug*

    I mean, I hope so. I guess.
I do hope they increase the frequency of VC titles. I know they don't want to overwhelm people and have titles that are completely swept away, but a few more than three a week would be nice.
