Dang, well, I guess talk pretty much dried up for this game. Not surprising since it's been out for a few months now, but I just finally started playing this and now I'm 10 hours in. Pretty awesome so far, the monsters are fun to equip and stuff, but not really fun to try to recruit. I'm just kind of picking them up as I go and not trying too hard for anything.
I don't like characters who are bitchy just for the sake of being bitchy, I'll stick with Bianca thanks. Plus, looking at the over all stats of the brides, the decisions don't really make that much if a difference.
So, is Dragon Quest IV worth a look if I can get it cheap? I already own DQ V and I've gotten quite smitten with it but I'm also entertaining notions of buying IV since it's on a sale right now.
Absolutely. The only DQ I haven't played yet is VI, and IV is definitely a standout in the series. I think VIII (possibly III too) is the only one I've played that I liked more.

I abused the Casino early, which is always fun.
Yeah, I wouldn't stress about the monsters at all; I ended up using three humans and only one monster for the endgame, though an extra healing monster or two in the wagon is always a good idea. I didn't really grind for any monsters, though I did pick up my Golem while walking around to level up my characters a bit (and he lasted me the rest of the game). You can ride a Slime Knight straight to the end of the game as well.

I used for humans for the endgame. Everyone says Golem is awesome, but I never did recruit one. Of course, I wasn't trying to recruit anything, I just took whatever came after battles. But my final party was (late game spoilers for those still at the beginning)
hero, Sancho, son, daughter
and it worked very well.
This was my first DQ and I loved it, definitely picking up IV soon. But not until I finish Dark Spire.
And I just agreed to trade off Dragon Quest 4 on Goozex. After the initial nostalgia rush, I just didn't have that much fun with it. I still have fond memories of the original and it's easily the best 8-bit RPG around, but it was hard to get up the enthusiasm to play through an easier version of a game that I had already played through and the fact that there isn't much in the way of character customization to mess around with just made it harder to stay interested.
I'm still looking forward to DQ6 though since I'm a sucker for job systems. I'll probably skip DQ5 since I hear it's even easier than DQ4.

You know. Unless you want to go to hell.

People like me wanted to go to hell. So I chose the bitchy sister. She adds a great deal of humor in the party talk thing.
DQ 3-6 is easily the highlight of the series. Any of those games are worth owning.
