Need OS Advice

helix141helix141 Registered User regular
I'm getting a new pc build going, have all the parts, just need to pick an OS. I own a copy of XP Pro, and don't know if it's worthwhile to buy Vista 64 or if i should just wait until 7 goes retail.

Any Suggestions/Comments?

Here are my specs:

27" LCD Widescreen Monitor
Intel Coreâ„¢2 Duo Processor E8400 3.00GHz w/ 6MB Cache
Soundblaster X-Fi Gamer
8 GB RAM
8800 GTX Video Card
2 * Panasonic DVD-RW Drives
Primary Drive: 80GB Raptor
Secondard Drive: 750 GB WD

You're only ever going to see 3.25GB or so of that 8GB running a 32-bit OS, max. (4GB limit - 768MB on your videocard - whatever other overhead.) For that reason alone I'd consider trying to nab an upgrade to Vista x64 as a cheap holdover until Win7 comes out.

is it true that activations for vista 32 roll over to a 64 install? I got a 32 disc from school under the student license that turns into a full one upon graduation.

You can't install x64 over x86 - a clean install is required. So no, you can't carry the activation since you'll need to phone home during your new install.

yeah i know I'd have to do a clean install, but would my key from the 32bit version be valid for a 64bit? some people have told me that it would, but i dont want to go through the hoopajoop of a clean install only to find out MS wouldnt accept it.

You can use the same key for 64 bit.

I have a Vista OS at work with 2 drives and it's really annoying that any software I install on the secondary drive (the primary is for vital stuff) never shows up in the programs list, any ways around that?
