Leverage - The best 2nd season show you're not watching.

edited January 2010 in Social Entropy++
There's this show on TNT that just started its second season and it seems like no one else is watching it at all and I find that to be a real shame.

This show is Leverage.

leverage_01_512x341%5B5%5D.jpg

Leverage is about a group of thieves and con artists led by one honest man who help get payback and such for helpless people who have been taken advantage of by other thieves and con artists.

Think The A Team meets Ocean's 11. It's got one Oscar winner and the rest of the cast are pretty much new names.

The team is led by Nathan Ford, played by Timothy Hutton.
Timothy_Hutton_(Sundance_2006).jpg
The Man with the Plan
Nathan is a dude who used to work for a giant insurance company, recovering stolen property and exposing frauds so his company didn't have to pay on a claim. But after he saved them literally millions upon millions of dollars in his career, they refused to pay on a claim of his own for a medical procedure that would have saved his son's life. Needless to say, he's kinda pissed about that.

Gina Bellman plays Sophie Devereaux.
gina_bellman-431x300.jpg
The Grifter
Sophie is a con artist art thief who can pretend to be anyone at all when she's running scam. Otherwise, she moonlights as an actress and is really, really bad at it. There is some history between her and Nathan, which is slowly coming out through storyline.

Christian Kane is Elliot Spencer.
Leverage-Kane.jpg
The Hitter
He's the team tough-guy. He beats the crap out of people and also can cook. He has an intimate knowledge of firearms, being able to identify one just from the sound of a gunshot, though he prefers not to use them. Dude kicks ass.

Beth Riesgraf is Parker.
58286.jpg
The Theif
Parker is your good ol' fashioned cat burglar. She is quite good at sneaking in to places undetected, picking pockets, and setting bombs. However, she sucks at interacting with people. It's usually pretty funny when a job requires her to talk to someone because she comes across very blunt.

The final member is Alec Hardison, played by Aldis Hodge.
Aldis-Hodge.jpg
The Hacker
He's the team tech wiz, hacker, and all around nerd. He's not too bad at running a con and pretending to be other people as well. He gets all the background info on the targets, gets the blueprints and plays Horde on WoW.

From first appearance and description, it sounds fairly average and could be very corny. But I checked out the pilot and got hooked. All the actors do a great job and it always is fun to see the marks get their comeuppance. The characters have very different personalities, but they mesh well and it's fun to see them interact. And it seems they might even have some decent character development waiting in the wings.

The pilot of the show sets them all up for life when it comes to cash, so basically they stick together because they enjoy the thrill of using their criminal skills to help people.

I highly recommend it. I think you can watch full episodes at TNT.tv

    I wouldn't say it's "hokey"

I mean, it's totally inconsequential, popcorn fluff. But it's very good at what it sets out to do, which is "Be a badass, breezy spy show."

This is probably the only show on TV not titled "The Daily Show" that's gonna actively benefit from the economic meltdown.

I mean, what better time for a show about stealing from the undeserving rich and giving to the poor? I'm waiting for the episode where they steal from Mernie Badoff.

I enjoyed the season premiere last night. It gave a good thumbnail sketch of the characters for newcomers, but still had a few jokes for people that have been watching all along. I hope this season continues to focus on bailout-related scams since they wrapped up Nathan getting payback on the insurance company last season.

Dark Blue, the new show that premiered after Leverage last night, was decent too. It's about a team of undercover cops and is, well, darker than most cop shows. It's a Jerry Bruckheimer production with some of the producers/directors from CSI, so it'll probably be episodic with a different undercover job each week instead of a continuing storyline. I'd love to be wrong and have it turn into something like The Wire.

It's on TNT, and from Jerry Bruckheimer.

Why on earth would that combination lead you to believe it would delve as deep as The Wire?

That's why I said I'd love to be wrong. The show has the potential to be deeper, if they follow through with the characters.
The chick was apparently connected to a murder before lying to get into the LAPD. The black dude is married and has political ambitions but had a relationship with another woman on his last assignment. The young white guy was suspected of going rogue all episode and is actually skimming money.

But like you said, it's from Bruckheimer and is on TNT, so...
