Ordering This Computer, hoping it all works (Halp!)

projectmayhemprojectmayhem Registered User regular
I was going to put this in the build thread but considering I am about to hit order I figured I would make a thread. Now I've never built a computer before and I've been out of the computer parts loop for about 4 years. I really have no idea if all the parts I've selected will work together. It seems they will, but I am not 100%. I also don't know if this computer will be the best for what I want to use it for, which is, Photoshop CS4/Lightroom and older PC games (CS Source, Maybe Call of Duty 4 and Diablo 3 when it comes out). I don't care about running games at maxed out settings. Also, does the motherboard have firewire? I cant tell. Right now the total price with shipping is 900$ but I would love to cut 100$ off of that if possible. K, here are the parts:

Also, I was looking at pics of the case and I could be way wrong, but will the motherboard fit properly? Like will all the ports come out of the back ok?

Thanks SO much in advance for your help. I've been using this 6 year old alienware and it's on the deathbed just about.

Step it down to the 650W version of that PSU - you could even go down to the 550 but that's only $10 difference.

Other than that I am unsure what else you could cut.

That motherboard has a firewire port.

I just saw this deal on newegg:
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor and ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard for 259.98$

I have no idea how the processor compares though to the one I have selected.

They also have this combo deal as well:

    AMD Phenom 9850 2.5GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Black Edition Processor and Foxconn A79A-S AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard for 199$

The Q9400 you had in the first post is better, but depending on what kind of photoshop work you're doing you should be able to step down. The Q8200 has a smaller cache (4MB instead of 6MB) and is a bit slower (2.33 vs. 2.66ghz). Looking at some sites, on synthetic benchmarks the 9400 is about 15% faster.

I would go for the Intel though instead of the AMD.

Its going to be photo editing mainly. Not to much design stuff.

Really though, I have been using this POS with a amd 3000+ 2.17 for 6 years and I think anything new will seem insanely fast.

That combo saves me a lot of money as well. You do seem to know more than me though so if you think I should stay with the Q9400 I will.

Does everything else with the build look ok?

For the record, that motherboard does have a firewire port on the back, beside the middle row of USB, you can see it clearly in the pictures.

Also, the Phenom II's are very competitive with the core 2 quads. The vanilla Phenom's, not so much.
