Fun with LIVE! (An adventure in LIVE and Zune Accounts!)

So I use the same name for everything online: ArcSyn

Now, it's thrown me my first curveball.

When a friend of mine got a 360, we all created profiles for ourselves. Naturally, I created ArcSyn. I never went online with it though as I didn't have a 360 and I used my friends profile for his Live subscription.

I got a Zune, and created the account, ArcSyn. It's associated with my Windows Live ID (previously known as the Passport). I can use this account to sign into the XBox side of things as well, though it's got nothing there.

Today, I decided I would do a trial subscription of Live and send my ArcSyn profile online. So I signed into the Xbox with my ArcSyn profile, access the Live area, and sign in using my Live ID associated with my Zune. I figured it would just pull the information from there and I would be golden. Unfortunately, when it asks to create a gamertag, it detects my ArcSyn Zune account and won't let me use it.

So currently I've been on the phone with XBox Live and Zune for about 30 minutes now, explaining my situation and I am on hold as they try to figure it out. I have been told that it should have auto-detected my tag from my Zune account and allowed me to use it, and they aren't sure why it's not working.

My friend who owns this XBox had a Live account, and then used the Live account to sign in when he got a Zune, so it works fine that way, but it seems going from Zune to XBox doesn't work so well. At least for me.

Anyone else had any luck with this type of situation?

EDIT UPDATE:
Apparently I had to log out of my profile, and recover my profile using my Zune log-in info. Unfortunately, this may mean that everything I've done on my profile is now lost.

    So I learned something today:
Don't create a local xbox profile without taking it online first or else you are going to have to do it all over again..

I spent about an hour or more on the phone with XBox support, and ended up with an erased local profile and a live profile with NONE of my stuff. My gamerscore, multiple Castle Crasher characters, and anything else that was tied to my profile are all gone. Oi.

My local profile couldn't become a Live account because I had a Zune/Live account from when I got my Zune. I could download my Zune/Live account to the Xbox, but despite being the same name, did not merge with the local profile. Attempts to log into my Zune/Live account from my local profile would not work.

Yeah, the whole linking system is a nightmare. When I tried to set up my first choice for a gamertag, it let me create it on Windows Live, but in trying to make a gamertag associated with it, it kept telling me it was already in use on the Live account.

Sorry to hear about your local profile getting wiped. Hopefully, they at least informed you of this impending infopocalypse. Makes me wary about calling Live support for anything related to my tag.
