[OOC] Mouse Guard: Spring 1149 - How the west was won

This is the OOC thread for a Mouse Guard PbP. The IC thread can be found here.
You can order the book and get the PDF for immediate download at the same time right here.

The Patrol
Patrol Leader: Bertrand, played by Destroyah
Patrol Guard: Elwood, played by MightySpacePope
Guard Mouse: Rafferty, played by El Skid
Tenderpaw: Noah, played by Zerinan

Status:
Session 1, Prologue, Lockhaven

Session 1, GM's Turn, The Journey to Shaleburrow
  • A fudged map has led the patrol astray, and not only the mice have awoken with the spring...

History
Prologue Notes:
  • Lucas is a guard captain who spent last winter in Pebblebrook. He knows the area well and Gwendolyn relies on him as a general adviser for many issues in the western settlements.
  • Otto is the mayor of Barkstone. The group's patrol leader will have dealt with him before on similar issues to those at hand.
  • The group is aware that one major factor in the wax shortage issue (in addition to the 'vanishing supplies' reports) is that Sprucetuck is claiming urgent need to preserve a bumper crop of medicinal herbs that cannot be allowed to rot or dry out. Naturally, Lockhaven highly prizes the potential to acquire a surplus of medicine for the territories.
Barkstone's view on the subject may or may not see this at the same priority if this point were brought up/discussed.

Recruiting is closed.
Recruiting:

Update: the party has been selected. Other interested parties may continue to post characters for use in bit parts and cameos if you wish, and also for replacements should the day come when a member of the patrol is killed or the player has to drop out for RL as sometimes happens.

Original Recruiting post
There is a distinct lack of MG to read along with/play in going on in this forum. So.

This campaign will begin in Spring 1149 and proceed up through the winter war and beyond... assuming everyone doesn't just get eaten by a snake first.

I am looking for 2-4 players. Please post character ideas if you are interested. These can be general blurbs that sketch out your character or a complete mouse. Please note any rank(s) you are either hoping for or adverse to playing. I am aiming for 1 each tenderpaw, guardmouse, patrol guard, and patrol leader if I end up taking a full four mice. I will be looking for a cohesive mix of characters - not too many 'Saxons' not too many 'Kenzies' etc. Apologies in advance to any who might be left out.

Comic and RPG book ownership are not required but I am looking for people who understand the flavors, so both are a big plus.

but yeah, I must smell bad or the MG interested folks are afk/lost interest. I guess it's kinda niche.

If you want to play, by all means make a mouse. I definitely need recruits. :)

My only concern is that 100% (i.e. "both") of the mice presented so far are rather invested Healers. Since it's not looking like we'll hit 4 mice, you might want to discuss & have someone refocus. All up to you guys though.

e~ Here is Arcanis' Conner from the other thread:
    Name: Connor

    Age: 22

    Hometown: Copperwood

    Fur Color: Black

    Cloak Color: Cyan

    Guard rank: Guardmouse

    Parents: Jasper and Moira (smiths)

    Senior Artisan: Arthur the Brewer

    Mentor: Aunt Quinn

    Friend: Bruce the Hunter

    Enemy: Hannidy

Belief: "You help yourself by helping your friends."

Instinct: "Give away what you don't need."

    -Abilities-

    Nature (mouse): 5
    Will: 3
    Health: 5

Resources 4 (practices smithing in winter(+1), parents are smiths(+1), buys gifts (-1), not thrifty (+0), packs carefully(+1))

Circles 4 (friendly, family member in the guard)

    (x's are checks)
    -Traits-

    Independent (x)
    Generous (x)

    -Skills-

    Fighter (xx) 3
    Healer (xx) 3
    Pathfinder (xxx) 4
    Persuader (x) 2
    Smith (x) 2
    Survivalist (xxx) 4

    -Wises-

    Night-wise (x) 2
    Trail-wise (x) 2

Gear: A balanced sword, a bow and arrows, a pouch of herbs

    Fate: 1
    Persona: 1
Connor is from Copperwood, born to Jasper and Moira who are both enterprising smiths well known in town for their fine works. Connor is a black-furred Guardmouse known for his generous nature and ability to make friends. He firmly believes that you help yourself by helping your friends, and is always more concerned with how his fellow Guardsmice are feeling; the Copperwood independent streak manifests through his unwillingness to burden other mice with his problems.

When not on active patrol, Connor spends his time as a smith for the guard, something his parents are very proud of. When not called upon to repair various metalworks, he is usually spending his time with his Aunt Quinn, with whom he is very close; she was his mentor in the guard. She gave him his cloak on graduation, which is cyan, because of his pleasant disposition. Not only that, however, she gave him her sword, which he treasures and sees as a good-luck charm.

Connor's senior artisan is Arthur the Brewer. He taught Connor about a great deal of herb-lore, though it was all primarily directed towards making beer.

On patrol, Connor is like his Aunt; he serves as the group's healer and woodsmouse. He has good eyes, especially at night, and is very skilled at providing medicinal care when on the trail. He has gained a small reputation within the guard as the mouse you want on your patrol when you're going out in the dark.

Connor's enemy is a mine foreman from his hometown Copperwood, Hannidy. Soon after he joined the Guard, Connor returned home for the winter with Quinn. While procuring some ore for his parents' smithy, he discovered that Hannidy refused to pay his miners full wages. Connor exposed him and they have been bitter enemies since.

His friend is Bruce, a young hunter from Lockhaven. Bruce wanted to join the guard, and was in the pool of applicants, but unfortunately did not make the cut, and so joined one of the hunting groups for Lockhaven. Connor has grown very close and sees Bruce as a little brother; Bruce often seeks him out for advice and for stories from his guard patrols, which Connor gladly shares.

I am interested! And I have the RPG book. However, I'm still waiting for the comic book to arrive [ordered it separately] and I'm coming off a fever, among other things, so I'm in not much of a condition to come up with anything now. How long will the recruitment be open for? ;-)

    Hi Graycoin
I'm not sure how long recruitment will be open since it seems to be so slow going. I would hope that we would get started in less than a week, but if necessary I'm willing to wait a little longer than that. I'm also willing to just start with two if it comes to it. It will really depend on whether or not interest picks up.

I find the idea interesting. I'll probably end up buying the book/pdf combo dealie sometime over the weekend. I wouldn't have time to look at the rules/make a character until Sunday night, though.

Also, I plan to make a Dark Jedi and I want my character to fight salt's.

For realz, though, I'd probably want to go for some sort of big, oaf of a mouse that has a kind heart and is some sort of fighter-type. Imagine Andre the Giant in mouse-form and you've pretty much got the character I'm thinking of. With that said, I won't be able to look at the rules until Sunday, so if what I want to do isn't possible, I apologize.

Cool pope. You could take a trait like "Clumsy" or "Bigpaw" (and play up the downsides of it) or something similar.

The character creation is easy to pick up, it's very organic. It's like "where are you from? what's your mom's maiden name? ok here are your stats."

    Elwood
    Patrol Guard
    Age: 50
    Home: Port Sumac
Fur: Gray (black back in his younger days, but it's lightened with age)
    Rank: Patrol Guard
    Cloak: Brown

    Parents: Thomas and Sarah (Stonemasons)
    Senior: Leon (Stonemason)
    Mentor: Alan (Guard Captain, old)
    Enemy: Bruno (Carpenter, Shaleburrow)
    Friend: Tina (Brewer, Shaleburrow)

    Nature: 3
    Will: 4
    Health: 4

    Resources: 3
Circles: 3 [not gregarious (+0), no strong ties (+0), has reputation (+1), no enemies (+0), no crime (+0), yes loner/tough/cool (-1)

Belief: I will help mold the next generation of the Mouse Guard.
Instinct: Safety of others before safety of self.

    Skills:
    Boatcrafter xx (3)
    Cook x (2)
    Stonemason xx (3)
    Deceiver x (2)
    Fighter xxxx (5) (one success)
    Instructor xxx (4)
    Militarist xx (3)

    Traits:
    Tough x
    Scarred x

    Wises:
    Star-wise, Weasel-wise, Mouse Guard-wise

    Gear: Halberd, flask, trailmix, flint

Elwood was born to Thomas and Sarah, who worked as stonemasons in Port Sumac. He had black fur as a younger mouse, but it has since grayed and has numerous streaks of white from old scars that didn't heal properly. He lost his left eye on a mission years ago and now wears an eyepatch. Elwood has lived through a lot during his 50 years. Perhaps the hardest thing to hit him recently was the death of his wife a few years ago during a raid by weasels. Elwood puts on an air of grouchiness and abrasiveness, but he truly cares about the Mouse Guard, especially the younger members, whom he sees as surrogate children of a sort.

After losing his parents at a young age due to disease, he was adopted by his uncle Leon, who was also his senior artisan. Leon continued Elwood's education in stonemasonry.

His contact in the Mouse Guard is Alan, an old buddy from his early days in the guard. Alan, unlike Elwood, was more willing to "play the game" and quickly rose through the ranks, whereas Elwood's cantankerous nature has held him back from a more prestigious post. Elwood doesn't mind, though, since he'd find the more administrative work to be boring.

His friend is Tina. Tina is a brewer, living currently in Shaleburrow. Tina and Elwood were close friends growing up. Tina ended up marrying one of Elwood's best friends, who died in the same raid that took his wife. In the years since, Elwood and Tina have become closer and are inching toward romance, although both are taking it slowly.

His enemy is Bruno. Bruno is a carpenter from Shaleburrow who has had an eye on Tina for many years.

We have three applicants now, so we're getting there. I would be fine going with 3 but every patrol needs a patrol leader, which we do not have yet.

The current mice are also not representing the Scout or Weather Watcher skills, which are really good. Future applicants might want to consider picking up one of those :o

Yeah he'd likely be really old. Up to you pope.
If you decide his mentor would be too old to still be around, you can replace him with a different, living contact to fill the gap. You're old and stuff so it's reasonable you've met a mouse or two ;D

    I could change Boat-crafter to Weather-Watcher, I think.

Also, if needed, I could modify my character to be a patrol leader without too much hassle. I sorta wanted to be the second in command who got to yell a lot and complain about the goddamned whippersnappers
    tigh.jpg

I could do something similar but just bump my rank. I also could've sworn that the book said that in lieu of an actual patrol leader, the highest ranked member gets temp leader status.

I'll change my contact/mentor to a buddy I had in the guard who became a member at the same time I did, but is now in a higher ranked position because he knows how to play the game better and isn't a salty old bastard.

As for my traits, the book says:

"Patrol leaders and guard captains may also choose a trait that represents a lesson learned during their tenure in the Guard. Guardmice and tenderpaws may not make this selection."

I guess I got confused that it doesn't mention patrol guards at all, although I guess they're considered guardmice?

Yeah it's a little ambiguous about the traits thing. I read it like you did, with them grouping patrol guards in with guardmice.

I'd rather not have Gwendolyn sending out a group with a temp leader, and I agree Elwood works better as a PG than a PL. I think that four players will work better for PbP encounters, too, so hopefully we'll get a Leader app soon. ::poke graycoin / destroyah / CF::

Well, I was working on a Patrol Leader heavy in Weather Watcher.

But I can change that if needed. I don't know to what though. Boatcrafter doesn't really fit the concept I was working on.

I'll post the current stats and a brief backstory on his family and how he joined the Guard.
(I can write more backstory as needed, I'm a goober like that. It's fun to write it up.)
    Name: Bertrand

    Age: 35

    Hometown: Port Sumac

    Fur Color: Grey

    Cloak Color: Sky Blue

    Guard rank: Patrol Leader

Parents: Finn and Sylvia Longshadow (father: cartographer, mother: trader)

    Senior Artisan: Gregory the mapmaker

    Mentor: Uncle Gamlion

Friend: Clove was a childhood friend of Bertrand‘s. She now runs a small herbalist’s shop in Whitepine. They keep in contact through letters and send each other gifts on birthdays and appropriate holidays.

Enemy: Tucker, a Guardmouse. Bertrand served with him before he was a patrol leader. In the course of a mission, Tucker’s actions caused the patrol leader to be injured and almost killed him. Bertrand called for him to be dismissed from the Guard but there was no direct evidence that it was Tucker‘s doing. So Tucker remains in the Guard to this day, although he has not advanced beyond Guardmouse rank. Both mice still hate each other. Bertrand hates Tucker for failing his duty as a Guard. Tucker hates Bertrand for trying to get him cast out.

Belief: "The duty of a Mouse Guard is to protect. Always."

Instinct: "Trust your gut. Don‘t hesitate when danger threatens."

    -Abilities-

    Nature (mouse): 5
    Will: 5
    Health: 4

Resources 4 (parents not in important trade (+0), buys gifts (-(-1), not thrifty (+0), not bad with money (+0), Packs carefully on journeys (+1))

Circles 4 (family tradition in the guard)

    (x's are checks)
    -Traits-

    Weather Sense 1
    Deep Ear 1
    Leader 1

    -Skills-

    Pathfinder (xx) 3
    Scout (xx) 3
    Orator (x) 2
    Persuader (xx) 3
    Fighter (xxx) 4
    Weather Watcher (xxxxx) 6
    Cartographer (xx) 3
    Survivalist (x) 2

    -Wises-

    Path-wise (x) 2
    Rain-wise (xx) 3
    Forest-wise (x) 2

Gear: A sharp sword, a good knife, pen, ink and paper.

    Fate: 1
    Persona: 1
Edit: I suspect my wises may be wonky, but I'm away from my book for ~two hours. I'll recheck them at that time. ...Actually, I'm going to go over the entire charcter then, just to check calculations and make sure everything is correct.
I made the stats last night and I want to make sure my brain did everything right. It tends to do weird stuff when low on sleep.
Bertrand was born in Port Sumac to Abram and Autumn Longshadow. Abram’s family has always had a tradition of joining the Guard. His two older brothers are both guard mice. Abram’s mother and father even met in the Guard. But Abram wanted something different. Eventually he settled in Port Sumac and married the daughter of a local trader. Even then, he still worked with the Guard, creating new trail maps and updating or copying older ones. Abram and Autumn soon had a son and named him Bertrand. He grew up in the normal fashion. Often, he played in his grandfather’s warehouse with Clove, the youngest daughter of another trader family.

At the age of 12, his father's mother and oldest uncle were stationed in Port Sumac for the winter. That winter, Bertrand spent many a day listening to the two tell of their duties and guard missions. Grandmother often told him that a Guardmouse had a duty to protect the Territories and the people in them. By spring, Bertrand was entranced, the thought of joining the Guard had been firmly entrenched. Though his mother initially opposed this decision, his father convinced her that it was Bertrand's choice.

When winter broke, Bertrand journeyed to Lockhaven with his grandmother and uncle to see if the Guard would take him.

Suggestions and constructive criticism are welcome.
