Like the title says, I want to learn Tagalog. When people speak the language I can, for the most part, understand them. I just can't read/speak it. I think this stems from the fact that I don't know the basics. The only Tagalog I know is what my family speaks (my entire family speaks Tagalog).
I've checked online for books, but none really stand out. Suggestions? Are books the way to re-learn a language? Or should I be looking for classes or something?
How old are you? If your entire family speaks just... ask one of them to teach you? Or dont let them speak to you in english, tell them to only speak in tagalog until you get good enough to start speaking back?
I've tried asking my family, but everyone's just too busy right now to teach me. As for them speaking to me in Tagalog, they've been doing that my entire life. When it's my turn to speak, for some reason, I just can't grasp what any word is in Tagalog so I just respond to them in English.
It sounds like you may need a bit of formal training. Have you looked up your local community college to see if they offer tagalog classes? If there's a prevalent filipino community in your area, chances are they'll have a class to learn it.
do you have the TFC channel? Or maybe look up youtube videos of filipino soap operas and variety shows? Some of the shows are dang addictive.
It sounds dumb, but my sister really improved her understanding of the language by basically watching those filipino tv shows several hours a day and picking up a lot based on the context of the conversations and whatnot. It even improved her speaking by teaching her better pronunciation. Your mileage may vary.

lostwords: Ha. I'll probably do that. It sort of reminds me of how I know some Japanese because I watch too much anime... >.<
