Hey everyone,

I figured that if I was to ask anywhere it should be here. I just got a Compaq presario laptop that my folks used to have. It has a Athlon 64 proc from about 4 years ago and 768 Mb of RAM with built in wi-fi. I've detected the wireless network that I can normally get onto downtown, but, from my apartment which is about two blocks away I only get one bar reception. Is there anyway for me to improve the reception on the laptop at all? Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

I'm no expert in this at all, so this post is half advice and half reviving the thread for your sake.

I don't think there is, dude. Maybe there's a more powerful card you can look into? I'm not sure. I don't think there is, though.

The question you're asking is innocent enough, but the intention is questionable.

To give you a basic answer without being infracted for telling you how to do something that is potentially unethical/illegal:

Yes, there are ways you can improve wireless reception on your laptop. All of them involve building an antenna. You can find lots of diagrams and building plans on the internets.

I re-read my OP and realized that it came off as it lookling like I'm trying to steal someone's wifi signal. Let me just assure everyone that it's not the case. I live in Moncton and here we have a downtown core wifi network setup for anyone to be able to use at any time. Mainly I use it for my work since I work in the downtown core and live a couple of blocks away. When I got my laptop I was hoping that it might have allowed me to use that same network from home but the signal is extremely weak from what I could see, sporadically showing up on the wireless network list. There's other networks (neighbours I'm assuming that have unprotected networks as well but I'm not going to even fathom the idea of hooking up to them). Thanks for the posts thus far, I'll just see what I can do and go from there. Thread can be locked as I don't want anyone to think of it as me trying to steal signals and what not or have anyone post something that could get them in trouble.

One option might be to buy a wireless router (which will have a stronger antenna than in your laptop) and then set that up as a repeater for the downtown wireless signal.
